‘The Vampire Diaries’ Star Paul Wesley, Director Dekel Berenson Set Up Three Color Films (Exclusive)
“The Vampire Diaries” and “Tell Me a Story” star Paul Wesley has teamed with award-winning helmer Dekel Berenson to create features and shorts under their new banner, Three Color Films. The pair are already working on their first short, “Abel,” shot in Yosemite, which turns on a father and son bonding over a shared sense of loss.
They plan to build a slate spanning shorts and features. One early project, set to be pitched to digital platforms, is an international short-form multi-part feature that would have Berenson’s shorts “Anna” and “Ashmina” as the first installments. “Anna” played in the Shorts Film Competition at Cannes this year and is shortlisted for a BAFTA. Berenson and the film’s producer, Merlin Merton, picked up the award for best short at the British Independent Film Awards earlier this month. “Ashmina” premiered at the London Film Festival.

“Adva” will go into production next April. The film is about a Adva, a 19-year-old woman in Tel Aviv who works as a drill instructor in the Israeli army. The film follows her as she deals with the impact of a date rape. Finding it hard to go on with her life, she considers her place in society and her role in training young men in the military.
“I think that while the story takes place in Israel, it confronts an issue that is present all over the world,” Berenson told Variety. The movie was inspired by the experience of a friend of his. “Upon hearing her account of the events I Instantly decided to transform her story into a film,...

The U.K. production scene has been dominated by a phalanx of successful producers for many years. A fresh wave of U.K.-based producers is now also getting international attention. Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite” is leading the field in what looks like a banner year for the British Independent Film Awards, but amid the celebrations, producers are grappling with unprecedented change.
The BIFAs are a bellwether for the U.K. biz. “We see it as a health check on what things are looking like — there is always a lot of talk of trying to build a platform for newer filmmakers and to make the industry more representative of the nation — and what this does is give a snapshot of where are,” Bifa board member Deena Wallace says.
Film4’s head of creative Ollie Madden is impressed by the spread of films this year and the awards’ overall development. “In the past there has been a little bit of a tension between wanting to retain its indie spirit and wanting to be a slick-enough and heavyweight enough awards ceremony to attract the [major] talent,...

Lena Headey on Immigration Drama ‘The Flood’: ‘Maybe It Will Grow a Bit More Compassion’ (Exclusive)
Lena Headey wants her new movie, “The Flood,” to further understanding of immigration crises around the world. She plays Wendy in the film, a British immigration officer deciding the fate of an asylum seeker. “What I hope, personally, is we change 10 minds, or people reconsider how they feel about someone who has lost everything,” she told Variety. “Or maybe it will grow a bit more compassion, understanding, curiosity or bravery.”
Helen Kingston’s script for “The Flood” draws on real-life stories after her, producer Luke Healy and director Anthony Woodley spent time volunteering in Calais, France, a refugee hot spot. Kingston’s work is “a really smart take on what’s happening,” Headey said, adding that the film deals with its subject matter without preaching or being overtly political. “I think it’s a very quiet, strong bit of cinema and it’s really honest about what’s happening and...

The Lebanese Censorship Bureau banned the British film, despite it being selected by the festival.
British Lgbt film Wasp has been banned from screening at the Beirut International Film Festival by the Lebanese Censorship Bureau.
Despite being selected by the festival’s programming team, the film has failed to receive the necessary permit from the country’s government to be screened during the event.
The move comes as a surprise as Hong Khaou’s Ben Whishaw-starring Lilting and Xavier Dolan’s Tom At The Farm - both of which highlight with Lgbt issues - were permitted to screen at the festival in 2014.
Wasp recently played at Britain’s Raindance Film Festival (Sept 23 - Oct 4), having debuted at FilmOut San Diego in May this year.
