Toronto–Hot Docs opening film “Nipawistamasowin: We Will Stand Up,” directed by Tasha Hubbard, won the Best Canadian Feature Documentary Award at the annual festival’s awards ceremony May 13, where 14 awards and Can$75,000 in cash and prizes were handed out to Canadian and international films and filmmakers at the Isabel Bader Theater.
Hubbard was on hand to accept the award, which comes with a Can$10,000 cash prize, for her film about a family’s pursuit of justice from Saskatchewan to the U.N. after the killer of their son Colten Boushie is acquitted of murder. “I’d like to thank this courageous family who trusted me, and who never gave up,” Hubbard said upon accepting it.

Mira Nair-produced Three And A Half and Amitav Kaul’s Interpreter Of Maladies are among the 32 projects selected for the Co-production Market of this year’s Film Bazaar (Nov 20-24) in Goa, India.
Three And A Half will be directed by Mira Nair’s long-time collaborator Sooni Taraporewala, while Interpreter Of Maladies is based on Pultizer Prize-winner Jhumpa Lahiri’s short story.
Organised by India’s National Film Development Corp (Nfdc), the co-production market has previously selected projects such as Ritesh Batra’s The Lunchbox, Kanu Behl’s Cannes title Titli and Chaitanya Tamhane’s recent Venice winner Court. This year’s selection comprises 18 projects from India and 14 from overseas.

The Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (Haf) has unveiled this year’s line-up of 29 projects, including two from the Philippines’ Brillante Mendoza.
The line-up includes four projects under the third annual Haf/Fox Chinese Film Development Award, which aims to support scripts from up-and-coming Chinese filmmakers (see full line-up below).
Mendoza is bringing feature film project The Embroiderer, about undying love, along with documentary Gay Messiah, which questions religion and belief. The Philippines’ Jun Robles Lana also returns to Haf this year with his project Our Father, after winning the 2013 Haf award for Barber’s Tales.
