Camera Threat“Don’t try to hold onto the wave that’s breaking against your foot. So long as you stand in the stream, fresh waves will always keep breaking against it.”—Widow Begbick in Bertolt Brecht’s ‘Man Equals Man’A preface for the unfamiliar. Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival is a small, strange and very special film festival situated in the northernmost place in England, the quite lovely Berwick-upon-Tweed, a small, much contested coastal town on the Scottish border that is home to a set of impressive defensive walls, Britain’s earliest barracks building, some nice pubs and a few good fish and chip shops that close at 5pm. Inaugurated in 2005, the town’s film festival—a five day affair that consists of a mixture of short films and features exhibited in the town’s single cinema, performances elsewhere, and installations placed in historic sites along the town...

"He took the to protect them from the darkest time in the history of this world." After cautioning against the first trailer for the new adaptation of the religious, rapture-centric book Left Behind starring Nicolas Cage, we can't help but do the same with the full theatrical trailer that has just been released. With melodrama heightened by the use of Civil Twilight's song "Letters from the Sky," this attempts to pull at the heartstrings, but still feels like nothing more than a TV movie from the 90s. Lea Thompson and Chad Michael Murray don't add anything to the proceedings, but we really didn't expect them to at all. Watch? Here's the new trailer for Vic Armstrong's Left Behind, originally from Yahoo: Left Behind is directed by Vic Armstrong and written by Jerry B. Jenkins, based on Tim Lahaye's novel of the same name. Without warning, millions of...

Defiance Season 1, Episode 3 “Down in the Ground Where the Dead Men Go”
Directed by Michael Nankin
Written by Kevin Murphy and Anupam Nigam
Airs Monday nights at 9pm on SyFy
Last week, Defiance had a two-hour premiere that functioned almost as a TV movie. There were three acts that were clearly demarcated with the final act typically immersing itself in some high-stakes action. If you missed the premiere and haven’t had a chance to look up any information about Defiance, there’s a lot you should know. First of all, this is a proper science-fiction series, which didn’t use to need to be a preface for a SyFy show. There are several alien races that exist alongside humans, there are spaceships, there is other advanced technology and it is set in the not-too-distant future. Second, the release of the Defiance TV series complements the release of the Defiance video game.
