"Can social media make us sick? I think it Is making us sick." Of course it is, but everyone is still addicted to it anyway. This fascinating 10-minunte short documentary titled Believing is Seeing is a compelling look at an actual real world psychological problem. Made by a Kiwi filmmaker named Sophie Black, this is part of the latest offering of "Loading Doc" short films from the doc program. A mysterious outbreak of tic disorders among young people leads doctors to question whether social media is making us sick and how it's affecting young people. The short introduces us to sociologist Dr. Robert Bartholomew, an expert in mass psychogenic illness, who talk clearly about how this "TikTok tic" is absolutely real and that social media should come with a health warning. It barely scratches the surface of this issue, but it should be more than enough to make you turn...

Filmmaker and costume designer Sophie Black recounts her personal interpretation of Heathers, a film defined by vivid visual interpretation.
It is just a coincidence that the first time I saw Michael Lehmann’s Heathers (1988) was within hours of the first time I saw David Lynch’s Blue Velvet (1986), and I immediately made comparisons between the two films which I may have not noticed otherwise. More people are quick to compare Heathers to the work of Tim Burton, because of the associates he had on the film (producer Denise Di Novi and star Winona Ryder, to name but two) and the fact that the candy-coloured suburban setting mirrors that of Edward Scissorhands (1990). But the picket-fenced world of Blue Velvet equally does so, and preceded both films, and only Blue Velvet matches Heathers in its extremity at portraying unusual characters, and capricious changes in editing and tone.

Writer Tommy Draper, director Tom Wadlow and Sophie Black collaborated on the script for Wasteland following the UK riots of 2012 and their story of a man fighting for love in a world ravaged by a zombie infested world seems to fit nicely with the inspiration.
Recently, actor, producer Mem Ferda joined the production as executive producer and we hope that that means we'll see some kind of release of the film in one form or another well soon.
Synopsis:
Wasteland is a feature film set in a world ravaged by a deadly virus, telling the tale of Scott Miller, a young man trying to survive, to find hope, to find purpose within a new world. Each day he survives in the hope of being reunited with his long lost love Beth.
Wasteland stars Shameer Seepersand, Jessica Messenger, R [Continued ...]...

It should go without saying that costume design for short film is an entirely different beast to features. Apart from the practical implications – generally fewer costumes, less money – any ensemble will surely register more emphatically with an audience. When there is less to look at and less opportunity to do so, we take more in. Everything collects meaning, from style to colour to fabric; carelessness in a 5-10 minute film can detract from, and worse still alter the message of a story.
Ashes is a thought provoking and sometimes uncomfortable short written and directed by Sophie Black. Set entirely in one room dressed and re-dressed accordingly with just two cast members, it clocks in at barely 7 minutes. Abstract but stopping short of pretentious, Ashes is the manifestation of physical, sexual and emotional abuse between a young couple who on the surface are living a Hollywood fantasy of sex by candlelight...

Light Films began shooting Wasteland in 2012, throughout the United Kingdom. Tommy Draper, Tom Wadlow and Sophie Black collaborated on the script and the film was partially influenced by the United Kingdom riots of 2012. The purpose of the film is to follow one man before, during and after a zombie apocalypse or infectious outbreak. Finally, actor Mem Ferda (Pusher) has recently been attached to this independent feature as executive producer. The film is about Scott Miller (Shameer Madarbakus). He is a man with ambitions to marry his girlfriend, Beth, and start a family. But, terror intervenes in his plans. A deadly virus is spreading across the world and Miller has to use his wits just to survive. Will he reunite with Beth (Jessica Messenger), before the world ends? Wasteland is currently in post-production and a release date for this title will be announced soon. The trailer for this post-apocalyptic yarn is below.
