Animated TV series, Jem a.k.a. Jem and the Holograms, premiered in 1985 and ran in first-run syndication, for 65 episodes, until it was cancelled in 1988. In the cartoon, Starlight Music owner Jerrica Benton fights to keep evil co-owner Eric Raymond from seizing full control of her late father's company, which Jerrica uses to support orphans. With the help of her star-shaped earrings -- which give her access to the holographic computer, Synergy -- Jerrica assumes her alter-ego, Jem, lead singer of the Holograms. Jem and the Holograms compete against Raymond's rocking rebel girl band, the Misfits, while protecting the Synergy technology and thwarting Raymond's nefarious takeover schemes.

No one else is the same… Em is her name! But, does the new Jem live up to her 80’s legend? Now you have two ways to find out! Not only will you find my written review below, but I also shot and edited a review just for you! (Go easy on me since I’ve never shot myself before!) It’s a ‘choose you’re own adventure’ kind of review!
Jerrica Benton, a small town girl is thrust into the spotlight after being discovered on YouTube, and is on the ride of her life with her sisters. The problem is that her video was posted under the alias ‘Jem,’ and now that’s who the world wants. Jerrica is now on a mission to find her voice in the world, and getting into mischief along the way.
I’m not going to lie. I was worried about this when I saw the trailer.

With no nostalgic bias or any real affinity for Jem’s totally tubular television show, my first true interaction with Jerrica Benton is Blumhouse’s (assuredly budget-controlled) adaptation, this year’s Jem And The Holograms. You know, the version where Google Maps substitute for overhead views, musical interludes are comprised of existing YouTube videos edited together, and where fan-submitted videos make up entire scenes of footage – yup, it’s all Blumhouse-d to hell. Poor Jon M. Chu was most certainly handcuffed monetarily on certain decisions, but even so, that doesn’t excuse a blasé coming-of-age story that should have been “outta sight” given Jem’s (originally) holographic disguise – which is totally changed. Here’s the watered-down, Blumhouse version of Jem that fans certainly weren’t asking for, built on healthy doses of believing in yourself, misty-eyed hugs, and utterly mundane generics.

Like many cartoons from the 1980s, the series Jem was based on a rather strange setup. The episodes followed a young woman named Jerrica Benton, who, with the help of a computer named Synergy and a pair of special earings, can use holograms to transform herself into her celebrity identity: the rock star Jem. This is not what fans should expect to see in this weekend.s live-action Jem and the Holograms movie, however, as Jerrica merely disguises herself with makeup and wigs instead of advanced technology. So why was this major change made? According to director Jon Chu, it.s because the film got too messy when it came to explaining what.s going on. Earlier this week I had the chance to talk with the filmmaker for a phone interview, and I took the opportunity to ask him why it was that the film moved away from the...

A ‘throw everything against the wall’ quality and downright catchy songs lift this sunny adaptation of the 80s cartoon despite a fairly ridiculous story
Based on the 1980s cartoon produced by toy manufacturer Hasbro, Jon M Chu’s updated, live-action film adaptation is by no means anything you’d call a great film. The moralizing is omnipresent, the script is desultory and its understanding of the way business and media work is positively jejune. But those are all big words that have no impact on its intended audiences. The music is catchy, the costumes are dazzling, the friendships are sweet and Rio (Ryan Guzman), the protective older boy who eventually falls in love with our lead character, is soooooo cuuuuuuute. This movie sure means well, and it’s just entertaining enough to (slightly) slip off the shackles of the great cultural conformity factory it ultimately represents. “Truly Outrageous” is a stretch,...

A virtual advertisement for YouTube as the vehicle for everyday people to express their inner selves — and, in the process, to achieve stardom and communion with likeminded souls (i.e. their fans) — “Jem and the Holograms” updates the popular ‘80s cartoon in ways both hyper-contemporary and laughably hackneyed. Largely discarding that kid’s show’s supernatural elements in favor of lame viral-video dreams about making it big while staying loyal to one’s self and family, this dreary origin story isn’t so much an adaptation as a reconfiguration. Far from the rock-star-superhero fantasy that the original “Jem” peddled, this big-screen iteration instead imagines that there’s nothing as great, or as unifying, as posting clips of yourself on the Internet, and waiting for everyone to immediately fawn all over you as a genuine voice of a generation. That’s what happens to Jerrica Benton (Aubrey Peeples), a girl living...

“Jem is truly outrageous. Truly, truly outrageous!” I know. I just totally dated myself. Jem was an animated series (1985 - 1988) based on Jerrica Benton, a record company owner and lead singer of the rock group Jem and the Holograms. The character is full mystery as she is able to...

The first trailer for the Jem and the Holograms reboot has landed.
The cult 1980s cartoon has been given a modern live-action update, and stars Nashville's Aubrey Peebles as popstar Jerrica Benton.
The film follows Jessica as she becomes an overnight star after her sister Kimber (Stefanie Scott) uploads her song on YouTube.
'Jem' is then backed by a group backed up with Kimber and their two foster sisters (Hayley Kiyoko and Aurora Perrineau), and they are soon signed by music mogul Erica Raymond (Juliette Lewis). 1980s icon Molly Ringwald also stars as Mrs Bailey.
The original animated series ran for three seasons from 1985, and has also been adapted into a new comic series.

Jem and the Holograms started life as an Eighties rock and roll toy line and animated series, telling the campy story of Starlight Music owner/manager Jerrica Benton transforming into rock god Jem with help from a holographic computer named Synergy. But as the film's first trailer shows, the upcoming film adaptation has taken some 21st century liberties with the plot. The movie focuses on a YouTube sensation's rise to fame and the evil manipulation of modern-day record executives – no magic technology, but plenty of young adult angst.

If all you saw of the new Jem and the Holograms movie was the above image, you'd wonder how this is supposed to be based on the totally outrageous and glitterific cartoon and toy line from the 1980s. But that's just Jem's alter ego, Jerrica Benton (Aubrey Peeples), a shy, normal girl who secretly moonlights as the leader of a popular rock band. Check out the first trailer below. The movie is set today, with the Holograms taking on a retro '80s look for their image and sound, all the way down to their keytars. See that image (and a keytar), and ease your worries in doing so, below. These new photos from the movie, which opens October 23, come to us via USA Today, and they illustrate the duality of the characters as they rise in fame under their...

Every dream has to start somewhere, and leave it to the director of Justin Bieber: Never Say Never to bring the world the story of Jerrica Benton and her rise to the top of the pops. Don't take our word for it, though, as you can feel free to watch the trailer for Jem And The Holograms yourself in the video below. Universal Pictures Austraila released this first look at Jon M. Chu's next directorial foray into taking 80's nostalgia and wowing today's generation with something from their siblings/parent's closets. The results are a mixed bag, but overall this looks like it's going to be a fun romp for the teen audience it's aiming for. Jem And The Holograms tells the story of young Jerrica and her accidental stumble into super stardom, all thanks to one of her sisters uploading one of her songs on YouTube. Of course,...

Every Generation Needs a Voice. Universal has debuted the first full trailer for Jem and the Holograms, a big live-action spectacle based on the super cheesy 80's animated TV show of the same name (if you've never heard of it before, give it a look, it's 80s-tastic). The plot is simple: music executive, Jerrica Benton, lives a secret, adventurous life as a glamorous rock star named Jem. Newcomer Aubrey Peeples plays Jerrica, along with Stefanie Scott, Aurora Perrineau, Hayley Kiyoko as her three sisters. This trailer is cut mainly for the Pitch Perfect crowd, as that's what this trailer is attached to, but it looks like it might have some potential. Not sure if this is your thing? Take 2 minutes to find out, just don't forget to have fun. Here's the first trailer for Jon M. Chu's Jem and the Holograms movie, originally from BuzzFeed: As a small-town...

Showtime, Synergy! Jerrica Benton is back in the film adaptation of "Jem and the Holograms," which looks very different from its '80s cartoon source material. The original told the story of a young woman who's transformed into a pop star thanks to a pair of earrings that project a hologram over herself. If it sounds like a ridiculous premise, it is ... but the trailer for the film is surprisingly toned down. Instead of looking like a total campfest, it looks more like a teenage "Dreamgirls," with Jerrica and her friends getting discovered after a video of her sporting a disguise goes viral on YouTube. They get Gaga-worthy makeovers from a record studio, but it's clear "Jem" is the real star -- and jealousy starts to break the girls apart. Keep an eye out for Rio (the hunky Ryan Guzman), a potentially villainous Juliette Lewis and Audrey Peeples touching a...

Rather than officially release a good-quality image of Jem and the Holograms, Blumhouse and Universal have let a pixelated nightmare take a tortured route to the screen. Universal's live action adaptation of beloved 1980s cartoon "Jem and the Holograms" finally has a release date: The flick will hit theaters on October 23, 2015.
"Jem" focused on Jerrica Benton, and musical alter ego, Jem. While the series was totally '80s, this new version will be a modern take; according to Variety, "The musical fantasy reimagines Jem amid the current hyperlinked social media era in a story of a small-town girl going from underground video sensation to global superstar with her three sisters."

We know, it’s truly outrageous that we really haven’t covered the upcoming adaptation of “Jem And The Holograms.” An American animated television series that ran in the mid ‘80s starting in 1985, the cartoon followed music company owner Jerrica Benton, her singer alter-ego Jem, her band the Holograms, and their adventures. The show was to girls what the animated 1980s “G.I. Joe” and “Transformers” series were to boys (and frankly this writer watched all three, though Jem not that long after the first year). But other than the fact that Jon M. Chu is directing and that it means the third “G.I. Joe” movie is either going to wait or go to another filmmaker, the film version of “Jem And The Holograms” hasn’t been that exciting beyond the fact it will eventually exist. Plus the cast is mostly full of relative unknowns like Aubrey Peeples, Ryan Guzman, Stefanie Scott,...

Truly outrageous! Oscar nominee Juliette Lewis is joining the cast of "Jem and the Holograms," according to Deadline.
John M. Chu is directing the live-action version of the '80s cartoon classic about a music company owner who moonlights as the lead singer of a rock band. Aubrey Peeples is set to play Jerrica Benton aka Jem.
Which character Lewis will be inhabiting is still a mystery. Lewis is a talented singer who's fronted her own rock bands before. The easy answer is that she's playing Synergy, the computer/fairy godmother that helps transform Jerrica into Jem. Or perhaps Lewis is a part of the rival band, the Misfits.
Production on "Jem and the Holograms" is already underway, but no release date has been set.

Jem and the Holograms is getting the live-action movie adaptation treatment. But who has the charisma to bring to life the adored 1980s cartoon characters? Hot on the heels of casting the film's title roles, Jem and the Holograms' producers have unveiled their leading man. His name is Ryan Guzman, and you can get a glimpse of him in the above video. THR reports Ryan Guzman has joined Jem and the Holograms as Rio Pacheco, the road manager/technical engineer/love interest to Jem. Here's a side-by-side comparison of Rio and Guzman. By day, she's Jerrica, a responsible and caring businesswoman running Starlight Music and the Starlight House orphanage. By night, she's Jem, lead singer of the rock band Jem and the Holograms. The 80s are coming back! Piece by piece, anyway...
Jem and the Holograms is an interesting take on the music world. When Jerrica Benton is at school, she's a nobody. But when she takes the stage as Jem, she's a star! Think Hannah Montana of the 80s.
What really made Jem unique was her band. Really, they only had to pack and travel for one, because Jem's back-up was, well, holograms!
Now this iconic franchise is getting revived as a movie, and we're seeing some very real actors play some very transparent characters.
Star of the hit series "Nashville," Aubrey Peeples, is all set to play Jem, while her sister Kimber, will be taken over by "A.N.T. Farm" actress Stefanie Scott. Meanwhile, Hayley Kiyoko ("The Fosters") and Aurora Perrineau ("Pretty Little Liars") will be performing as Jem's holographic bandmates Aja and Shana.

Nashville’s Aubrey Peeples has been tapped to play Jerrica Benton in the live-action movie adaptation of the Jem and the Holograms cartoon.
Aubrey Peeples Starring In 'Jem and the Holograms'
For Peeples, 20, Jem and the Holograms, which is to be directed by Jon M. Chu, will be her first major film role. In the movie, she’ll have to channel both Jerrica and her alter ego, Jem, the pink-haired front-woman of The Holograms, reported The Hollywood Reporter. The 1980s cartoon was inspired by a Hasbro toy line.
In an effort to modernize the movie, Jem and the Holograms will be distancing itself from the 80s decade. It will be reimagined "for a whole new generation with themes of being true to who you are in a multitasking, hyperlinked social media age."
In keeping with the reimagining, Jem is an orphaned teenager who gets her big break through a viral video on the Internet.
