Freeform has ordered an animated comedy series about a New York City It girl starring Annie Murphy, John Cho, Christine Baranski.
The youth-skewing network has handed Praise Petey (w/t) from SNL head writer Anna Drezen, who created the series, and exec producers including Monica Padrick, Mike Judge and Greg Daniels a series order.
It comes as the Disney-owned network takes another crack at animation, having previously developed a number of series in this space.
Praise Petey follows Petey, voiced by Schitt’s Creek star Murphy, a New York City “it” girl who has it all until her life comes crashing down around her. As luck would have it, a mysterious gift from her father gives her a new lease on life: she’s going to lean into modernizing his small-town cult.
Cowboy Bebop star Cho voices Bandit, a potential love interest for Petey and a cult member since childhood whose mother was a high-ranking member.

It’s beginning to look a lot like the holiday season, which means different things to different people. For some, it’s the opportunity to spend time with loved ones; for others, a chance to finally dig out Phil Spector’s Christmas album and stick it on repeat for the next month. The end of the year also means that it’s time to look back at the best releases of the past 12 months, which is where I come in. Below are nine of the best comic books to hit shelves in 2021, running the gamut from superhero movie source material to the memoir of one of America’s most beloved political figures of the past few decades.

Cartoon Network Studios debuted a new iteration of its animated shorts program, Cartoon Cartoons, its first dedicated shorts initiative in over a decade that will look to showcase diverse stories, discover new creative voices and mentor the next generation of animators.
The program’s predecessor, an animated incubator, began in 1995 as World Premiere Toons, and the initiative has over the years launched popular, award-winning series such as Genndy Tartakovsky’s “Dexter’s Laboratory,” Craig McCracken’s “The Powerpuff Girls,” C.H. Greenblatt’s “Chowder,” J.G. Quintel’s “Regular Show” and Rebecca Sugar’s “Steven Universe.”

Tara Duncan has been in the job as President of Freeform for just over seven months and she is starting to put her mark on the Disney-owned network.
She tells Deadline what her priorities are for the network, new areas that she’s looking to move into and also addresses recent concerns over diversity.
This comes after she attended her first TCA in charge, an event where Freeform revealed it had handed a series order to comedy pilot Single Drunk Female and was piloting an adaptation of Phoebe Robinson’s book Everything’s Trash But It’s Okay.
Current Freeform originals include dramas The Bold Type, The Fosters spin-off Good Trouble and Motherland: Fort Salem and comedies Grown-ish and Everything’s Going To Be Okay. The Jessica Biel-produced Cruel Summer is also launching later this year.
Duncan said while the network is “highly resourced”, expect around the same number of scripted originals on air.

“The Simpsons” will begin off-network airing on Freeform in September 2019, the network announced Tuesday.
Still airing new episodes on Fox, at least through 2020-21, “The Simpsons” will now rerun episodes from all 30 seasons of Matt Groening’s animated family comedy on the cabler.
Previously “The Simpsons” ran off-network on Fxx, which has also been the streaming home for the show, having landed the full library rights in 2013. Fxx and its parent company FX Networks, in addition to 20th Century Fox Television (which produces “The Simpsons”), became a part of Disney earlier this year; Freeform is also under the Disney umbrella. Freeform also shares off-network rights to “Family Guy,” another one of Fox’s long-running, hit animated comedies, with Fxx. Last month, it was announced that “The Simpsons” would have a new streaming home on Disney Plus when that new service launches in November 2019.

Freeform is making its way into the animation world with two new series focused on women: Betches and Woman World.
Betches is based on the wildly popular multimedia brand of the same name, created by Samantha Fishbein, Jordana Abraham, and Aleen Kuperman. The half-hour, irreverent animated series that will follow three best friends and roommates as they navigate early adulthood in New York City together. The three women loudly try to figure out who they are in their careers and in love. They make almost every mistake in the book along the way, but they’re doing their best to make sure they have an anything-but-basic life. Rachel Koller (Lady Bits with Lauren Giraldo) will write the pilot and Emma Roberts (American Horror Story) will produce the series alongside the Fishbein, Abraham and Kuperman. Carli Haney, Kesila Childers and Gil Goldschein from reality TV banner Bunim-Murray Productions are set to executive produce.
Also on Freeform’s new animation slate is Woman World, a half-hour, comedic animated series based on Aminder Dhaliwal’s graphic novel of the same name. The pilot playfully answers the question “what would our world look like if men became extinct?” This community of women leans on each other for survival as they search for love and their identity in this ladies-only existence. The pilot is executive produced by Felicia Day and written by Dhaliwal.
