Malum is, according to its press release “a bold and expanded reimagining of the 2014 horror cult classic, Last Shift”. Now some may simply take that as a fancy way of saying it’s a remake of a film that’s less than ten years old. But there’s a difference between this and your average remake, it’s the work of the original director Anthony Diblasi and his co-writer Scott Poiley.
I considered revisiting Last Shift before watching Malum because while I remembered the basic plot and that I really liked the first hour then being let down by the final act, I didn’t recall a lot of the details. But, in part due to how knowing what to expect spoiled the impact of another recent reimagining,...

The following contains major spoilers for Last Shift (2014) and Malum (2023).
Nothing divides the horror community like a remake. For decades fans have debated the merits of cinematic retellings of our most beloved horror films with strong arguments on either side of the equation. The trend exploded in the early 2000s with Platinum Dunes leading the charge to remake or reboot nearly every iconic title available. Recent years have seen the rise of legacy sequels; a curious hybrid that simultaneously continues the original story and (hopefully) takes the franchise in a new direction. Enter Malum. Anthony Diblasi’s 2023 gore-fest is an expanded reimagining of his own breakout film Last Shift. Released in 2014, this haunting cult horror follows rookie police officer Jessica Loren (Juliana Harkavy) whose first shift on the job goes terrifyingly wrong.

In a rare turn of events, director/co-writer Anthony Diblasi gives a new update to his own 2014 horror film Last Shift with Malum. Diblasi reunites with Last Shift co-writer Scott Poiley, creating an expanded story that strengthens the original narrative and offers even bloodier occult mayhem. Diblasi’s Malum serves as a perfect introduction to his twisted demonic realm while supporting his original film as a fascinating companion piece.
Rookie cop Jessica Loren requests the last shift in a decommissioned police station where a notoriously vicious cult saw their demise years prior. Loren hopes to use the solitude to her advantage as she searches the empty building for answers about her father’s strange death. What should be a simple, quiet evening becomes anything but when the cult members seem to reach out from beyond the grave, plaguing the officer with harrowing visions and torment in attempts to finish what they started.

Remakes are nothing new. They made up like 98% of the horror output through the 2000s, and though they have slowed to allow room for other types of storytelling (legacy sequels remain the current hotness), they are still very much a part of the horror landscape. The standard remakes are really no-brainers—a film reaches a certain age and the studio might want to breathe new life into it for an opportune release. Or maybe a director has a particular vision or a way to spin it for a more modern audience. And of course, foreign films are often remade in the US to make them more appealing to an American audience. The smallest subsection of remakes is a little harder to understand, and often leave audiences wondering, “Why?”

"Your daddy started something very important..." Welcome Villain has unveiled the official trailer for an indie horror film titled Malum, arriving in theaters only at the end of March. This is actually a new remake of the 2014 horror film Last Shift, made by the same filmmaker updating his own film, similar to the way Sam Raimi made Evil Dead 1 & 2. Helmed by director Anthony Diblasi and co-written by Diblasi and Scott Poiley, Malum re-imagines the original critically-acclaimed horror hit from the festival circuit and expands on the filmmaker's vision of nightmare-inducing terror. A rookie police officer willingly takes the last shift at a newly decommissioned police station in an attempt to uncover the mysterious connection between her police officer father's death and a vicious cult. This updated film stars Jessica Sula as Jessica Loren, with Kevin Wayne, Monroe Cline, Candice Coke, Valerie Loo, Clarke Wolfe, Natalie Victoria. This does look pretty freaky.

Bloody Disgusting can exclusively report today that new genre studio Welcome Villain Films’ first original production, previously known as Untitled Last Shift Reboot, has a new name
The official title treatment and new film stills have been unveiled for the film, now titled Malum, along with an announced Spring 2023 nationwide theatrical release.
Helmed by director Anthony Diblasi and co-written by Diblasi and Scott Poiley, the same creative team behind 2014’s Last Shift, Malum reimagines the original critically-acclaimed horror hit and expands the filmmakers vision of nightmare-inducing terror.
“With this new film, we really wanted it to stand on its own, and giving it a new title absolutely does that,” says filmmaker Anthony Diblasi. “The name ‘Malum’ is not only a major element of the plot and how things unfold, but that word, in some of the oldest languages in history, means ‘evil’ and ‘an offense against right or law,’ which seamlessly ties into the twisted,...

Only eight years have gone by since the release of director Anthony Diblasi’s well-received horror feature Last Shift – but the filmmaker has already decided to return to the concept for an “expanded reimagining” that recently wrapped production. Jessica Sula (Split) stars in the currently untitled reimagining, which is coming to us from Welcome Villain Films. This is the company’s first feature.
The Last Shift reimagining centers on
a rookie police officer (Sula) who willingly takes the last shift at a newly decommissioned police station in an attempt to uncover the mysterious connection between her father’s death and a vicious cult. Throughout the night, she finds herself barraged by terrifying supernatural events while unveiling the truth behind her family’s twisted past. This reimagining takes the premise of the 2014 festival hit and flips it on its head, thrusting viewers into a relentless, adrenaline-fueled, bloody cult nightmare.

Earlier this year, brand new production and distribution company Welcome Villain Films launched with “an expanded reimagining” of 2014’s Last Shift in the works. Today, Last Shift announced its lead and a tease of what to expect.
Split actress Jessica Sula (“Scream: The TV Series”) will star in director Anthony Diblasi’s reimagining of his 2014 chiller.
Sula will play “a rookie police officer (Sula) who willingly takes the last shift at a newly decommissioned police station. She hopes to uncover the mysterious connection between her father’s death and a vicious cult, but throughout the night she’s thwarted by terrifying supernatural events that connect to her family’s twisted past.”
The untitled reboot has wrapped production, with post-production expected to finish this fall for a planned 2023 release.
Diblasi co-wrote the upcoming film with Scott Poiley, and it sounds like it will be a much bigger, bloodier affair.

A rookie cop faces the creepy supernatural remnants of a malevolent cult in Anthony Diblasi's Last Shift. With Diblasi's latest film hitting Blu-ray and DVD on October 6th from Magnolia Home Entertainment, we caught up with the director in our latest Q&A feature.
Thanks for taking the time to converse with us today, Anthony. How did you and co-writer Scott Poiley come up with the story for Last Shift?
Anthony Diblasi: I went to Scott with an idea to tell a really contained story set around a police station dispatcher in a small town—all alone and trapped in the station. I really wanted to push the boundaries of what we could convey with sound design and I felt like the dispatcher angle was an excellent way into that kind of storytelling. The second Cthulhu figure in a three-part series from Warpo will be available this fall. Also: a trailer for The Inhabitants, first details on IFC Midnight's acquisition of Cabin Fever, El Rey Network's Stephen King marathon, and Last Shift on Blu-ray.
Warpo's Cthulhu Figure Series: Press Release: "Chicago, Il (September 9, 2015): Warpo, creators of the Legends of Cthulhu action figures, today released part two of three of Cthulhu: The Great Old One, their retro commercial series for the forthcoming 12” Cthulhu figure.
In keeping with the company’s method manufacturing, the process of development by which Team Warpo creates everything with the mindset and methods of the late 1970s to mid-1980s, the commercial series was created with the look and feel of being an “uploaded artifact” from the era – a rip from an old VHS tape that was used over and over again to capture storylines for the sandbox adventures of childhood.

Despite having seen both of Anthony Diblasi’s previous films, Dread and Cassadaga, on the big screen at Frightfest, it’s safe to say I’m not the biggest fan of his work – his two prior movies were, at least for me, very much middle-of-the-road efforts that did nothing to surprise or excite. If you're curious as to what exactly 'Paymon' is, all you need know is it's the latest film project from filmmaker Anthony Diblasi, which means it's one to look out for. Diblasi served as producer on several Clive Barker projects such as 'Midnight Meat Train' and 'Book Of Blood,' then made his directorial debut with 'Dread,' one of the few great adaptations of Barker's works from his infamous Books Of Blood series. His 2nd feature 'Cassadaga' is due out later this year, as is 'Missionary,' but that hasn't stopped him from tackling his fourth full length feature 'Paymon,' a Charles Manson-inspired horror flick which is currently shooting.
In 'Paymon,' officer Jessica Loren has the last shift at a transitioning police station, assigned to wait for a hazmat crew who’s coming to pick up bio-hazard waste from the armory.
