Read More: What We Learned from Watching (Almost) the Entire Criterion Collection Since its inception in 1984, the scope and importance that The Criterion Collection has had on cinema is immeasurable: Letterboxing, audio commentary, special edition DVD and Blu-ray packages and painstakingly made film restorations are at the forefront of their revolutionary ideas. Funded by film buffs Robert Stein, Aleen Stein and Joe Medjuck, the Collection has the upmost care for cinema history and its preservation, and directors know that, which is why some of the biggest names in cinema have worked with the company to have their films properly released, from Coppola to Scorsese, Lynch to De Palma, just to name a few. Tough-to-impress director Terry Gilliam once said, "It's nice working with people for whom profit isn't the only reason for existence. They seem to be actually interested in film." There are currently over 775 films in The Criterion Collection,...

Somewhere in Moscow in 1984, 29-year-old computer engineer Alexey Pajitnov sat at his work station, deep within a building called the Soviet Academy of Sciences. Here, in front of his hulking computer, an Elektronika 60, Pajitnov was working on one of his latest programs. If you’d been one of his superiors, Pajitnov would have told you that he was examining its code for bugs. But in reality, he was addicted.
Had you taken a look over Pajitnov’s shoulder at what he was working on back then, it’s likely you wouldn’t have thought much of it in any case. Just a few characters juddering down a screen - the Elektronika being such a crude computer that it could only display text. But what the young programmer had in front of him was the early...

Hello,
If by some chance you are Ms. Darvin from Beach Channel High, my name is Michael Davis and I was at Beach Channel the Very first year, I transferred to The High School Of Art & Design at the end of that year.
I was in your art class, I was black (still am) wickedly funny ( still am) and had a running rivalry with another student named Robert Stein.
Long story short-I’m now a huge success on so many levels ( and modest) and I’m reaching out to you because today I was being interviewed (told you I was a success) by CNN and they asked me who was the most influential teacher in my life.
I said Renee Darvin.
So, if you are that Renee Darvin please contact me so we can catch up. You told me once you would never forget me and I said the same to you…...

Some of you (hopefully) may have noticed my recent profile on the late, great Robert Mitchum. In the course of researching the piece, I came across the fun tidbit that Mitchum had been a favorite of film critic Roger Ebert.
The mind rarely works in linear fashion, and I suspect mine may even be more chaotic than most. That item pinballed around the ol’ noggin, and, somewhere in all that bouncing here and there, triggered a bit of nostalgia. Probably because I was working on the piece during Oscar week, the mention of Ebert reminded me that there had been a time when this would’ve been the point in the year I’d be looking forward to the annual “If We Gave Out the Oscars” (or something like that) show done by Ebert along with his on-screen partner of nearly two dozen years, fellow film critic Gene Siskel.

Randy takes a ride.
Have you ever been riding your chopper down a southern U.S. highway, lookin’ for America and unable to find it? If so, “Easy Rider” is the movie is for you. I’ll call a spoiler alert here in order to mention that in between the moment you see that shotgun barrel stickin’ out of the pickup truck window and the moment it blows the stars and stripes right off your greasy hippie head – you’ve found it.
Before that moment occurs, maybe you can pull off of Route 666 and visit a southern wine tasting room. Even if it’s Muscadine they’re pourin’, it’s better than what the rednecks have for you. That Cracker Barrel cheese plate never tasted so good. If they’re servin’ meat, be sure to inquire as to which highway it was found on.
All kidding aside, I spent...

Someday when we think back fondly on the television series Glee – and you know we will – we'll remember one of the bright spots of its third season was Sebastian Smythe. The conniving Dalton Academy Warbler is the guy you love to hate. He tried to break up Klaine (Chris Colfer and Darren Criss) after all, and then tried to take down the entire McKinley Glee Club via blackmail and a gravel slushee. But turns out the boy isn't all bad. Dave Karofsky's (Max Adler) attempted suicide in the last episode hit him hard. Sebastian actually suffered guilt over cruelly rebuffing the stocky (well, relatively stocky) Karofsky at a gay bar.
What’s next for the newly repentant Sebastian? When new episodes begin airing in April, will we see a kinder, gentler soul? Who else could Sebastian set his sights on to romance?...
