New festival director Leena Pasanaen also talks future plans.
Polish DoP-director Wojciech Staron’s Brothers was the big winner at this year’s Dok Leipzig (Oct 26 to Nov 1), the first edition under the new festival director Leena Pasanen.
The International Competition jury, which included Bosnian filmmaker Jasmila Zbanic and Docpoint Helsinki’s artistic director Ulla Simonen, awarded the festival’s main award, the €10,000 Golden Dove, to Brothers about the love-hate relationship between two Polish brothers in their 80s.

Sorry Oscars. But after the Indie Spirit Awards, the number two spot in terms of Award Season importance are the Cinema Eye Honors. Seems like it was only yesterday when Aj Schnack & Thom Powers teamed up for one basic, logical concept: an event that would reward yearly output of documentary film in a rightfully sound manner. With the wind in their sails, the 6th annual edition was held last night and deservingly so, adding to its double wins at the Idfa and Sundance, it is 5 Broken Cameras that took the top honors for Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Feature Filmmaking. Co-directed by Emad Burnat and Guy Davidi – political activism via you guessed it, five video cameras. The film was released via Kino Lorber.

Taking place at the American Museum of Natural History, the Margaret Mead Film Festival kicked off yesterday, with a full slate of films that tell stories centered on under-represented groups of people, including this title, which we first profiled much earlier this year. The documentary titled, Meanwhile in Mamelodi, directed by Benjamin Kahlmeyer and produced by Boris Frank, centers on a poor South African family struggling to make ends meet, while the raucous festivities of the 2010 World Cup are taking place near their town, bringing hope and joy to their community. Here's a synopsis from the festival's website: Set against the raucous backdrop of the 2010...
