The 2024 Tony Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday, May 2 by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry. The reveal of the roster of contenders was carried on the Tonys YouTube channel. While the nominations for the 77th annual Tony Awards were determined by a few dozen theater professionals, winners will be decided by upwards of 800 members of the Broadway community.
Three dozen shows were eligible for consideration by the nominating committee. On the play side, there are 10 original works and five revivals in the running. Over on the musical side, 15 new tuners were in contention as were six musical revivals. The cutoff date for eligibility was April 27.
The Tony Awards are set for June 16 at Lincoln Center and will be hosted for the third year in a row by Oscar winner Ariana DeBose.

Welcome to Tony Talk, a weekly column in which Gold Derby contributing theater editors David Buchanan and Sam Eckmann discuss the Tony Awards race. Following the opening of new musical “The Outsiders” on Broadway on April 11, we rack our brains about what other shows are likely to earn nominations in the top category of Best Musical, including frontrunners “Suffs,” “Illinoise” and others.
Sam Eckmann: Hi David! I can’t believe we are sitting roughly two weeks out from Tony nominations and we still have no idea what the Best Musical race is going to look like. That’s partly due to the insane crunch of new musicals opening at the end of the month: I’ll be squeaking in shows like “The Great Gatsby” and “Illinoise” right before the Tony Awards deadline, just like the nominators. But also partly because there is still no obvious frontrunner (be it a giant...

The Outsiders musical, based on S.E. Hinton’s literary classic and Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic 1983 film adaptation, will open on Broadway this coming spring.
Directed by Danya Taymor, the show will officially open April 11, 2024, at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, the musical’s producers announced Monday. Previews for the production, which features a book by Adam Rapp with Justin Levine, and music and lyrics by Levine and Jamestown Revival’s Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance, are set to begin March 16. Casting for The Outsiders will be announced at a later date.
Set in Tulsa during 1967, the story’s central ensemble — led by Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade and their chosen family of “outsiders” — find themselves in a fight for survival in a world that doesn’t accept them. A story about the bonds of brothers, a quest for purpose and the hopes one holds onto, the new musical revives Hinton...

Angelina Jolie and Vivienne Jolie-Pitt are teaming up for an upcoming Broadway venture, Et has learned.
Angelina will serve as a lead producer for the musical The Outsiders, an adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s novel and Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 film.
Vivienne, the 15-year-old daughter of Angelina and Brad Pitt, will serve as her mom’s volunteer assistant and will be involved in the production.
“Viv reminds me of my mother [Marcheline Bertrand] in that she isn’t focused on being the center of attention but in being a support to other creatives,” Angelina says in a statement to Et. “She’s very thoughtful and serious about theatre and working hard to best understand how to contribute.”
This is an exciting time for the mother-daughter duo as a source tells Et that Angelina has been taking Vivienne to the theater “since she was a little girl, and Vivienne loves musical theater.
