The In Memoriam segment of the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday night paid a moving tribute to several stars and movie industry folk who have died over the last year — but, as ever, social media was quick to point out the more glaring omissions.
During the telecast, the In Memoriam segment featured Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli and his son Matteo performing a moving rendition of “Con te partirò” as pictures of talent who have died flashed on the stage behind them. The segment opened with a tribute to the late Russian political activist Alexei Navalny, who died last month in prison in controversial circumstances.
“You’re not allowed to give up,” Navalny says in a clip from the film Navalny, which won best documentary feature at the 2023 Academy Awards. “If they decide to kill me, it means we are incredibly strong.”
The segment also featured brief photo tributes to the likes of Matthew Perry,...

Late actor’s Mathew Perry’s female friend said that he was “angry and mean” in the weeks before his death because he had been taking testosterone shots. Perry’s autopsy report revealed a grimmer look at the star’s final days. It noted that aside from a lethal amount of ketamine mixed with the opioid-like drug buprenorphine, which is used to alleviate pain and help with addiction to opioids, he had been taking Tammoxifen to lose weight, antidiabetic medication and nicotine lollipops, reports pagesix.com.
Before his death, he was trying to quit smoking. His live-in assistant said he had been smoking about two packs of cigarettes per day.
The medical examiner’s report further exemplified how heavily Perry relied on prescribed and over-the-counter medication to maintain his quality of life.
“In the assistant’s bedroom, there were multiple open, empty, half-filled medication bottles prescribed to the decedent, as well as over-the-counter medications,...

John Stamos revealed on Instagram in the wake of Matthew Perry’s death that the late “Friends” star came to his aid during an embarrassing trip to the set of the NBC sitcom. Stamos made a surprise cameo on “Friends” in 2003 during the show’s ninth season. He played Zach, Chandler’s co-worker who is courted to be a potential sperm donor for Monica and Chandler. The couple invite Zach over to their apartment for dinner to assess his physical and emotional attributes.
“Matthew and I had been friendly long before ‘Friends,’ so when I guest starred as Zach, the prospective sperm donor for Chandler and Monica, I hung with him a lot,” Stamos remembered about filming the episode. “Standing backstage, ready to make my entrance, Matt whispers, ‘The audience is going go crazy when they see you! Get ready for some loud screams.’ I walk through the door… silence.
