“The Last of Us,” “The White Lotus,” “The Bear” and “Beef” gained momentum Saturday night as each show picked up big wins at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
HBO’s “The Last of Us” was by far the dominant favorite with eight wins. FX’s “The Bear,” Netflix’s “Wednesday” and HBO’s “The White Lotus” won four apiece. Netflix’s “Beef” took home three trophies on the first night of the two-night Creative Arts Awards at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles.
Wins for “Last of Us” included guest actor and actress in a drama series for Nick Offerman and Storm Reid, respectively. The series also won for visual effects, picture editing, sound editing and other key craft categories.
Judith Light prevailed as guest actress in a comedy for “Poker Face” while “Ted Lasso” favorite Sam Richardson took the statuette for guest actor in a comedy.

Completely off trade news radar, we learned that Turkish filmmaker Tolga Karaçelik moved into production on his English-language debut this past June with none-other than Steve Buscemi in the driver’s seat. Karaçelik has been to Park City on two previous trips bringing Ivy (2015) and 2018’s Butterflies (which was the Grand Jury Prize Award winner). Shot in New York City, this fourth feature film goes by the title of The Shallow Tale of a Writer Who Decided to Write about a Serial Killer and saw The Wolf of Snow Hollow cinematographer Natalie Kingston on the project. It’ll have to be rushed to be included in the fest due to the production start date.…...

In Apple TV+’s Black Bird, Dennis Lehane’s limited series about convicted criminal Jimmy Keane (Taron Egerton) trying to elicit a confession from suspected serial killer Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser), cinematographer Natalie Kingston knew she wanted to tackle toxic masculinity from a fresh angle.
Speaking during Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees event, Kingston, who shot all six episodes, said, “Dennis’ perspective on this was really inspiring and really what got me into this. He wasn’t interested in playing up the violence, being very literal with the story, being on the nose, making these killings feel very heightened or theatrical. It wasn’t about that at all.”
Instead, Kingston noted, the work was to tell “a human story.” Lehane’s telling, based on true events, is “character-driven,” she added, “and it’s about this uncomfortable tense dialogue between these two prisoners and this unlike, false friendship and about the different,...

Celebrating television might feel like a wasted effort right now, especially since 11,500 writers and 160,000 actors are walking the picket lines for the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. But it would be unfair to overlook the extraordinary work of so many Emmy-worthy creatives, even if the ongoing dispute between the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers prevents writers and actors from talking about the very series that got them a ticket to the 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards in the first place. Sadly, everyone will have to wait until January 2024 to see who will accept their just rewards. But this year’s Contenders Television: The Nominees virtual livestream event that kicks off Saturday at 10 a.m. Pt will certainly make it worth the wait.

Ray Liotta’s daughter Karsen has reacted to her late dad’s Emmy nomination.
Ray — who passed away on May 26, 2022 — was nominated in the Best Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or TV Movie category for his role in the Apple TV+ series “Black Bird”.
Ray is up against his “Black Bird” co-star Paul Walter Hauser, Murray Bartlett (“Welcome To Chippendales”), Richard Jenkins (“Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”), Joseph Lee (“Beef”), Young Mazino (“Beef”) and Jesse Plemons (“Love & Death”) for the gong.
Karsen said in a statement: “I am so grateful to the members of the Television Academy for honouring my Dad with this nomination,” the Daily Mail reported.
“He was so incredibly proud of his performance in ‘Black Bird’, and it would mean the world to him to be nominated alongside Taron and Paul,” she added, referencing Taron Egerton’s Best Actor in a...

Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with Apple TV+, for this edition, we look at how the editing, cinematography, and sound created the pulsing drama “Black Bird.”
Adapted from the book “In with the Devil” by James Keene and Hillel Levin, the Apple TV+ limited series “Black Bird” shines a disturbing light on murderer, rapist, and suspected serial killer Larry Hall, who preyed on girls and women during the 1980s and ‘90s. Show creator Dennis Lehane (“Gone Baby Gone”) unravels the story, based on actual events, through a gripping, character-driven six episodes that redefine the psychological crime thriller genre.
The narrative examines the male psyche through the eyes of Hall (Paul Walter Hauser) and Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton), a high school football star turned con serving 10 years without parole...

The Critics Choice Association, which will host the 28th annual Critics Choice Awards on January 15, 2023, unveiled its TV nominations on December 7. The organization’s sagacity can be better appreciated in light of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which announced its own nominations on December 12, failing to recognize Ray Liotta for his outstanding work in the six-episode Apple TV+ limited series, “Black Bird.”
The late actor plays ex-cop Jim Keene, father to the show’s imprisoned protagonist, Jimmy (Taron Egerton), who gambles for his freedom by transferring to a maximum-security penitentiary in order to befriend a fellow inmate (Paul Walter Hauser) and extract a confession.

Keene, Sr.’s health crisis motivates Jimmy’s actions and gives the show its emotional stakes, as “Black Bird” is ultimately about a man trying to make it back to his dad before it’s too late.

In Gold Derby’s recent discussion with several television cinematographers, as part of our Meet the Experts panel, several directors of photography dished about what made them want to work behind the camera as well as projects that they would love to work on. The cinematographers we talked to included Natalie Kingston (“Black Bird”), Arnau Valls Colomer (“The English”), Ramsey Nickell (“Five Days at Memorial”) and Caleb Heymann (“Stranger Things”).
You can watch the television cinematographers group panel above with the people behind these four projects. Click on each person’s name above to be taken to each exclusive video interview.
Colomer became fascinated with the film industry when he started taking photography lessons at age 16. His instructor introduced him to a film school that had just opened in Barcelona and the idea that he could actually do this got stuck in Colomer’s brain. When Natalie Kingston was setting up how she was going to photograph the limited series, “Black Bird,” she found a specific piece of inspiration for what look the show would have. “The crux of my visual inspiration was from the photographer, Gordon Parks, and this 1957 photo essay he did called ‘The Atmosphere of Crime,’” she tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: TV Cinematographers panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).
Kingston remembers how visceral the photos were in using natural light but also having a moody and cinematic feel to them. “That really spoke to me. You could just feel the texture almost in these photos. There was this pastel color palette that I really responded to that I thought could be an interesting visual juxtaposition for the tone and the themes that we were exploring in ‘Black Bird.’”

Horror movies about food disorders are few and far between, or at least I haven’t seen many at all. But that is the subject that Shapeless tackles and it goes to some extreme places with it.
The film follows Ivy, a jazz singer who isn’t quite struggling but dreams of something bigger and better, while also suffering from an eating disorder that risks ruining not only her career but her whole life.
Visually, Shapeless is phenomenal. Her first feature film, director Samantha Aldana can obviously take plenty of credit for this but cinematographer Natalie Kingston deserves plenty of praise also. It is no surprise at all that she has a couple of noteworthy titles on her C.V. such as...

Two movies in, actor and writer/director Jim Cummings has certainly proven to be a talent full of idiosyncrasies. His debut, Thunder Road, made him someone to watch, while now, we have his sophomore feature to consider. Hitting this week, The Wolf of Snow Hallow sees Cummings turning his odd eye to genre, while very much keeping his voice intact. The result isn’t quite comedy and isn’t quite horror, but there’s a murder mystery element throughout that oddly fits his blackly comedic voice. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel or really push him forward as a storyteller, but as a lightly entertaining lark, it does the trick. The film is a mix of comedy and horror, centered on a series of murders in a small Utah mountain town. First, it’s a woman on vacation with her boyfriend. Then, it’s a ski instructor. And so on.

Sheriff John Marshall is standing in front of his fellow AA members. “I’m not good with anger,” he says, and from the way this lawman is acting and the manner in which he’s addressing a number of folks offscreen, you know this is an understatement. He’s not good with controlling his anger. John has problems with his ex-wife, problems with his teenage daughter, problems with that dipshit town coroner, problems staying sober, problem keeping a lid on his temper. There’s an edge to everything the guy...

At just 80 minutes excluding credits, The Wolf of Snow Hollow has a pretty good amount of things on its mind. Not the wolf itself, though; that’s more of a MacGuffin. In fact, it’s not even too focused on the how of it all. As for the who? Well, it’s not too specific on that either, but what it does ostensibly focus on are the what and why. Alas, without the first two, the others never really come to be.
So, where does that leave us? Snow Hollow, Utah. That’s pretty clear. It’s a mountain town where everyone knows everyone, so it only makes sense that, upon staying in a cabin, two tourists fall victim to a grizzly attack. The evidence doesn’t point to a person but a werewolf instead, full moon and all. But remember, that’s not the real focus here. What is it then?...

John Marshall (Jim Cummings), deputy sheriff of the small Utah skiing town of Snow Hollow, has a lot on his plate. He’s trying to maintain a relationship with his teenage daughter (Chloe East) while keeping his ex-wife at arm’s length; he’s attending AA meetings as a recovering alcoholic; and he’s essentially transitioning into running the police department himself even as his dad, Sheriff Hadley (Robert Forster), resists the notion of retirement.
And, oh yeah, the town is suddenly plagued by a series of brutal murder-mutilations that look like nothing less than the work of a werewolf.
That’s the premise of The Wolf of Snow Hollow, the second full-length feature from Cummings, who also writes and directs in addition to starring in the picture. If The Wolf of Snow Hollow sounds somewhat like a genre-flavored remake of Cummings’ debut, the micro-budget comedy-drama Thunder Road, that wouldn’t be wildly off-base.
