This is how Reality Check ends — not with a whimper, but a bang.

Since TVLine’s launch in 2011, we’ve been bringing you a weekly deep dive into all things American Idol — hosted by yours truly, upgraded starting in 2012 by “Season 6 standout” Melinda Doolittle’s mic-dropping expertise and edited to madness and beyond by “the great Jason Averett.” Reality Check was itself an upgrade of Idolatry — an EW.com series that launched in 2007 — and I’d be remiss if I didn’t pause here to thank TVLine’s...

Quick! What did you have for lunch on the second Tuesday of January 2012? If the best you can come up with is “urrmm, a sandwich?” or “something I reheated in a Tupperware dish, maybe with sauce?”, chances are that in a few weeks’ time, you’ll be having similar recall problems regarding American Idol‘s exceedingly pedestrian Aspen audition episode.
In fact, if I close my eyes and don’t consult my notes, my most vivid memories of the episode include the sight of an unfortunate yellow romper, a snippet of Lady Gaga’s “Government Hooker,” and a reference to turkey genetalia.

Shania Twain is bringing her patented brand of countrified pop (or is it popified country?) to American Idol tonight as she mentors the season 9 top 6 through 50 of her best-known tracks (Check out my dream set list for tonight's show here.) Before someone makes me grimace by attempting the high camp of "That Don't Impress Me Much," though, I'm going to rank our half-dozen musical gladiators in terms of their momentum over the last nine weeks of live performances. Won't you do the same by voting for your favorite in our Power List poll? (Related: Watch Idolatry exit videos with Andrew Garcia,...

"American Idol" announced Tuesday that it's reverting back to a Top 24, with 12 men competing against each other and 12 women competing against each other. Is this a good thing?
We say yes. A resounding yes, for several reasons: gender balance, higher quality and more exposure before Top 12 starts.
Gender Balance
We love guys, nothing against 'em. But last year's "American Idol" Top 12 was 8 men and 4 women. We attribute this to the fact that the majority of people who vote (vote, not watch) on "American Idol" are female and they may be swayed by a cute guy who isn't actually one of the best vocalists. Then what happens is a female (usually a quirky girl, a la Jesse Langseth or Mishavonna Henson) gets left out who maybe could have made the Top 12 in lieu of a Scott McIntyre or Jorge Nunez, who maybe should not have.

The Wild Card round is on, finalists of "American Idol" that got eliminated in the Top 36 round are competing for a place in the Top 12. The four judges determine who deserve a stool, based on their March 5 performance. At the end of the show, results are read, four advance to the next round, making it a Top 13 instead of Top 12.
First singing on the night was Paula Abdul's pick Jesse Langseth who brought up Rufus and Chaka Khan's "Tell Me Something Good". Paula sticks to her, while the others thought it was mediocre. Matt Giraud gave his shot, singing Jackson Five's "Who's Loving You". Paula saw it fit to him and Simon Cowell called it a "billion times better" than the previous performance.
Megan Corkrey sang "The Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" by KT Tunstall. Simon praised her to be current and Kara DioGuardi blatantly said that...

"American Idol" went wild Thursday night as three of the eight wild-card hopefuls made it into the Top 12 -- but in a shocking, last-minute turn of events, the judges allowed a fourth contestant through. Jasmine Murray, Megan Corkrey and Matt Giraud became the final three singers to get the judges' blessing -- that is, until Simon Cowell told Anoop Desai right before the show went off the air: "We decided recently we’re going to make this a Top 13." So, this season it will be Jasmine, Megan, Matt and Anoop joining Lil Rounds, Scott MacIntyre, Jorge Nuñez, Alexis Grace, Michael Sarver, Danny Gokey, Allison Iraheta, Kris Allen and Adam Lambert in the Top 13. Watch as they begin their battle to become the next singing sensation next Tuesday at 8 p.m. on Fox! During Thursday night’s show, the eight wild-carders each sang for the judges. Jesse Langseth went first, singing...

Thursday (March 5) night's Very Special "American Idol" is a results show and a performance episode all-in-one, as the eight Wild Card contenders sing and the judges will make their picks in a single action-packed hour. As a result, this will likely be a hybrid recap, shifting from performances to minute-by-minute results as they occur. Bear with me here... The full excitement after the break... Singer: Jesse Langseth Song: "Tell Me Something Good" My Take: Jesse's opted for a slinky, short back skirt and knee-hightboots tonight. Do we think, though, that five minutes before show-time she got a little self-conscious and...

Our greatest fear has come true: The squealing, overemotional hopeful that is Puerto Rico's Tatiana Nicole Del Toro landed one of the eight coveted spots in American Idol's Wild Card round tonight. What is Idol thinking?! Sure, some people would argue that beneath the theatrics Tatiana has a somewhat decent voice, but we are just not those people. Simply put, it's an outrage. (Outrage, we say!) We do wholeheartedly agree with the choices of Salt Lake City's tattooed blondie Megan Joy Corkrey, Jesse Langseth ("Bette Davis Eyes") and 16-year-old Jasmine Murray, but we're on the fence about the other four contenders, Matt Giraud (the one who didn't exactly do Coldplay justice), Von Smith...

On Wednesday night's "Idol," another trio of contestants clawed their way into the Top 12 -- and the judges gave eight more "wild card" hopefuls the chance to scrap it out for the remaining three spots! Lil Rounds, Scott MacIntyre and Jorge Nuñez were the trio of successful singers from Group No. 3 to make it into the Top 12, joining Alexis Grace, Michael Sarver, Danny Gokey, Allison Iraheta, Kris Allen and Adam Lambert. "This is great, thank you!" exclaimed Lil Rounds, who sang Mary J. Blige's "Be Without You." Judge Kara DioGuardi predicted that viewers can expect "just ridiculous vocals every single week" from Lil. Scott MacIntyre, the visually impaired inspiration who crooned Bruce Hornsby's "Mandolin Rain," was second of the night to advance. "I'm just so blessed to be here. I'm having the time of my life," he said. "It feels like a dream come true." Randy Jackson gave Scott his vote of confidence,...

The next set of singers admitted to the Top 12 rounds of "American Idol" is read live on Wednesday, March 4. Along with the third batch, the judges will make the selection of eight people from the Top 36 that don't make it to the next round by vote. These 8 will proceed to the Wild Card round and sing on Thursday, March 5 for their last shot. The judges will fill in the three remaining spots with their choices.
First result is brought rather quick and practical. Lil Rounds, who stood among the crowd on the performance night, is asked to stand up and walk to the stool because she is in the Top 12. A string is called in next, Arianna Afsar, Taylor Vaifanua, Alex Wagner-Trugman, Kendall Beard and Scott MacIntyre. Ryan Seacrest says that only one of these gets to move on. Scott MacIntyre, the blind guy is in.
Seacrest then calls Nathaniel Marshall and Kristen McNamara,...
