Karachi, Sep 3 (Ians) Indian cricketer turned commentator, Dinesh Karthik prefers Pakistan pacers over India’s. He gave insights on the Pakistani trio of Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, and Shaheen Shah Afridi and counted them as deadly on Sri Lankan wickets.
Talking to Cricbuzz, Karthik stated, “Shaheen, Haris Rauf, and Naseem can bowl 90+ consistently and all three are very different. Shaheen Shah, obviously the left arm, has an angle to it and brings the ball back in, Naseem Shah swings the ball both ways, Haris is arguably one of the best bowlers right now at the back end of an inning because of his skid and the nasty bouncer that he’s got.”
On being asked whom he would prefer to bat on these wickets, he found Indian pacers comfortable to face. He mentioned the bounce that the Pakistani trio generated off the pitch as a reason not to play them.

Pallekele, Sep 2 (Ians) Hardik Pandya made 87 while Ishan Kishan slammed 82 in a vital 138-run partnership for the fifth wicket in a remarkable recovery act to help India overcome a top-order collapse and make 266 in 48.5 overs against Pakistan in their first match of Asia Cup at Pallekele on Saturday.
But as soon as the mid-innings break began, persistent rain, which had caused interruptions twice during India’s innings, came back with greater force, forcing the ground to be fully covered.
With an inspection at 9 pm local time and cut-off time at 10:27 pm, the inevitable happened when handshakes happened all around, implying that the match was called off as rain had the final say.
As a result, Pakistan, the top-ranked Odi side, has qualified for the Super Four stage of the competition, making the India-Nepal match at the same venue on Monday a must-win for Rohit Sharma & Co to enter the next phase of the competition.

Pallekele (Sri Lanka), Sep 2 (Ians) Pakistan’s left-arm fast-bowling spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi emerged as the stand-out bowler by taking 4-35 in skittling India for 266 in the Asia Cup Group A match at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
Though he tested openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, Shaheen was successful after the first rain interruption in India’s innings. Afridi found some movement to beat Rohit twice and finally got his man when the left-arm pacer got one to nip back and hit the top of the right-handed batter’s off-stump through the gate.
In his next over, Shaheen cramped Virat Kohli for room on an attempted punch, to which the right-handed batter could only chop onto his stumps. It also made Afridi the first bowler in international cricket to get Rohit and Kohli bowled in an Odi match in his electrifying opening spell.

Pallekele, Sep 2 (Ians) All-rounder Hardik Pandya made 87 while Ishan Kishan slammed 82 as the duo helped India overcome a top-order collapse and make 266 in 48.5 overs against Pakistan in their first match of Asia Cup here on Saturday.
Under challenging conditions, India were reduced to 66/4, before Kishan and Pandya stepped up in a pressure situation to stitch an important 138-run partnership. While Kishan mixed sensibility with aggression, Pandya was calmness personified and upped the ante after the wicketkeeper-batter fell.
For Pakistan, pacers Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf were amongst the wicket-takers, even though their spinners and fielders weren’t up to the mark. Just when it felt the game would drift away from Pakistan, the pacers triggered another collapse as India went from 239-5 to 266 all out.
Electing to bat first, Rohit Sharma slammed two leg-side boundaries via nonchalant flicks off Shaheen, who tested the openers well. Naseem also...

Pallekele (Sri Lanka), Sept 1 (Ians) Ahead of India’s opening match in the Asia Cup against arch-rivals Pakistan on Saturday, captain Rohit Sharma insisted that his team has to play at its best in the competition and focus on getting things right on-field as any side is capable of beating anyone on any given day.
“There are six very competitive teams in the Asia Cup and on a given day anyone can beat anyone. Rivalry is there for people to talk about. As a team, what we see is we have an opposition to play tomorrow and see what we want to do. What is going to help us is to keep doing the right things on the field,” he said in the pre-match press conference.
Pakistan recently became the top-ranked Odi team and came into the highly-anticipated clash on the back of thrashing Nepal by 238 runs in the tournament opener in Multan.

Lahore, Aug 28 (Ians) Former Pakistan pacer Wahab Riaz has pointed out that young fast bowler Naseem Shah is yet to fully showcase his true potential and capabilities. In his Odi career till now, Naseem has taken 25 scalps in 10 matches, averaging 16.12, including two five-wicket hauls.
Naseem recently hit winning runs for Pakistan in a one-wicket win over Afghanistan in the second Odi at Hambantota against Fazalhaq Farooqi, against whom he had smashed two sixes to complete a sensational one-wicket win for carrying Pakistan in last year’s Asia Cup final in the UAE.
“Naseem has bowled well in quite a lot of matches. However, I feel that he has still not performed up to his capability as of yet. He should win matches for Pakistan considering his capability,” Wahab was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.

Wanted to see Afghanistan spinners’ overs off and accelerate against their fast bowlers: Shadab Khan
Hambantota, Aug 25 (Ians) After Pakistan secured a thrilling victory in the second Odi against Afghanistan, all-rounder Shadab Khan said his plan was to see off the overs of their spinners and go for the runs against the faster bowlers.
In chasing 301, Shadab made 48 off 35 balls and brought Pakistan back in the hunt in the 49th over when he smashed a four and six on two full tosses against fast bowler Abdul Rahman.
With 11 runs needed off the final over, he was run-out by Fazalhaq Farooqui at the non-striker’s end, after moving out of the crease before the ball was bowled. But Naseem Shah (10 not out) and Haris Rauf held their nerves to take Pakistan over the line with a ball to spare.
“When you’re a senior player, you go through these stages again and again. Sometimes you fail, sometimes you succeed. I try to be as calm as possible.

Hambantota, Aug 22 (Ians) Ahead of the Asia Cup and the subsequent World Cup India, Pakistan pacers came up with a strong performance in the 1st Odi against Afghanistan here on Tuesday.
The Pakistan pacers shared eight wickets between them as they bowled Afghanistan out for 59 in the first Odi of the three-match series.
Haris Rauf (5-18) took a career-best haul while Shaheen Shah Afridi (2-9) and Naseem Shah (1-12) also hit top gear in Pakistan’s first Odi outside home in 2023.
Pakistan had struggled to gather momentum in their own batting innings, needing a late ninth-wicket stand to lift them past 200 against a strong Afghanistan bowling attack.
Opener Imam-ul-Haq was the only silver lining for Pakistan as he struck a 94-ball 61 while ShadabKhan (39) and Iftikhar Ahmed (30) too made vital contributions as the 1992 World Champions were all out 201 in 47.1 overs.
But the quicks ensured that Pakistan were on course for a win within the first 10 overs.

Colombo, July 24 (Ians) Abrar Ahmed and Naseem Shah shared seven wickets between themselves while Abdullah Shafique and Shan Masood smashed half-centuries to put Pakistan in a commanding position over Sri Lanka at the end of Day One in the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club ground on Monday.

When Ramy Youssef is writing an episode of his self-titled Hulu show, he absolutely loves walking that fine line between comedy and drama. “It’s probably my favorite thing to do in comedies, to just get near that thing you’re not supposed to. I feel that if someone’s gonna give me their time, I want to be able to cover something that could crack open a conversation at the dinner table that wouldn’t have been opened without some sort of healthy debate,” he reveals to Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). He feels that with the most recent season of the program he has really found that perfect tone to strike for the series. “I feel like in the third season we really struck a great balance between our character development and it being something that just really makes me laugh out loud.

As the story goes, Chakbast, a lawyer by profession, was once sent a hemstich, or half line of verse, by a ‘khafifa’ (small cause) court official to complete. This line was "Rag-e-gul se bulbul ke par bandhte hai" and Chakbast responded, wittily but rather cruelly too, to make it "Khafifa adalat mein ullu ke patthe/Rag-e-gul se bulbul ke par bandhte hai."
As per literary scholar Saraswati Saran ‘Kaif’, this couplet spread widely across the country in the 1920s and 1930s, though few knew who its author was, with users freely changing the first line to "Suna hai ki Meerut mein ullu ke patthe.." or "Aligarh mein ullu ke patthe.." or as needed for the put downs of specific cities or regions.
That, however, is far from the high point of the poetry of Chakbast, who, in his comparatively short life (1882-1926), brought together – and reflected – in his poetry four...

Who watches TV for the main characters?
The supporting characters are usually far more interesting.
2022 provided no shortage of supporting characters running away with the show.
These are the scene stealers of 2022 whose spinoffs we would watch.
Commander Jett Reno - Star Trek: Discovery
The incomparable Tig Notaro brings her signature snark to the role of Chief Engineer but, in actual fact, is the reincarnation of Tos' Bones. Wait, that's not the right term since they're technically contemporaries. Emotional doppelganger. Yeah, that fits.
Who wouldn't give their port side nacelle to see a Young Sheldon-like prequel for Reno as a spunky and brilliant young engineer aboard the USS Hiawatha? Or as a candy-addicted cadet at Starfleet Academy?
Even a Short Trek where she visits family and her wife's final resting place? Maybe Reno will create a holodeck program where she can celebrate their anniversary. Notaro would kill that emotive opportunity with deadpan delivery.

Rawalpindi, Dec 5 (Ians) All-rounder Ben Stokes was rewarded for his daring second innings declaration and attacking field placement as England sealed a famous 74-run victory over Pakistan in a thrilling Day Five of the first Test at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium for one of their famous wins.
Racing against time, light and a stubborn Pakistan batting order on the most docile of pitches, England held their nerve as Jack Leach claimed the crucial final wicket by trapping Naseem Shah lbw, clinching one of England’s greatest Test wins.
The 74-run win is England’s third Test victory in Pakistan, with Stokes becoming just the third visiting skipper after Ted Dexter in 1961 and Nasser Hussain in 2000, to win a Test match in Pakistan.
It was all made possible after Stokes’ bold declaration at tea on Day Four on Sunday, which gave Pakistan a stiff target of 343 for an improbable win. But an...

Melbourne, Nov 13 (Ians) All-rounder Ben Stokes showed calmness and poise in his typical gritty style to slam an unbeaten 52 in guiding England to the Men’s T20 World Cup title with a five-wicket win over Pakistan in the final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground here on Sunday.
Six years after Stokes was left heartbroken in the 2016 final at Kolkata when Carlos Brathwaite hit him for four consecutive sixes in the final over, Stokes finally found redemption by rising to the occasion in a big match and sealing England’s second T20 World Cup trophy.

Sydney, Nov 8 (Ians) Former Australian opener and the current Pakistan team coach for the Icc T20 World Cup here Matthew Hayden has castigated Aaron Finch’s side for not preparing enough for the “premium event”, whereas every side across the world had pulled out all the stops to ensure the best preparation for the showpiece event.
On the eve of Pakistan’s semifinal clash against New Zealand at the Sydney Cricket Ground, the charismatic former opener said, Finch’s side lacked freshness.
“The Australian team has some thinking to do. There has to be some freshness. And I think one of the great strengths of Australian cricket has been its ability to be able to recognise when to make that gear change into a different playing roster,” opined Hayden.
“Just 12 months (back), we were sitting here talking about the T20 champions and that was Australia. Here we are again on the eve of another semifinal.

Dubai, Sep 11 (Ians) Pakistan captain Babar Azam won the toss and opted to bowl first against Sri Lanka in the final of the Asia Cup 2022 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, here on Sunday.
Before this match, Sri Lanka and Pakistan had met in three Asia Cup finals — the former won in 1986 and 2014 while the latter emerged victorious in 2000.
Pakistan made two changes in their team for this important game as Naseem Shah and Shadab Khan came in place of Usman Qadir and Hasan Ali.
“We’ll bowl first. Looking forward to the match. The confidence level is high. We’ve played very well in this tournament. Every match we have a new Potm. Shadab, Naseem back. Usman and Hasan out,” said Azam at the toss.
On the other hand, Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka decided to stick with the same playing XI, which helped them win their Super Four game against Pakistan.

Sharjah, Sep 8 (Ians) Pakistan No. 10 batter Naseem Shah used a borrowed bat to hit the back-to-back sixes in the last over that sealed a memorable victory against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup Super Four stage.
Chasing a modest target of 130, Pakistan needed 20 off 10 balls with two wickets in hand. They lost senior batter Asif Ali in the 19th over and panic set in Pakistan camp as everything came down to the last-wicket pair of Naseem Shah and Mohd Mohammad Hasnain as they went into the final over needing 11 runs to win. Naseem Shah smashed back-to-back sixes in the final over of a thriller in Sharjah to help set up a clash with Sri Lanka in the final of Asia Cup 2022.
Shah borrowed the bat from Hasnain and performed his last-over heroics.
“I know everyone today will be talking about my batting. But I have practiced a lot in the nets.

Sharjah, Sep 8 (Ians) The back-to-back sixes smashed by his No. 10 batter Naseem Shah in the final over of the Asia Cup 2022 Super Four stage match against Afghanistan reminded Pakistan skipper Babar Azam of the last-ball six hit by the legendary Javed Miandad in the same Sharjah International Stadium a few decades back.
Pakistan, who had to win the match to put India out of contention, needed 20 off 10 balls with two wickets in hand when Naseem Shah walked out to the middle. The tailender, who had only ever faced one ball in T20Is before this, had the experienced Asif Ali at the other end and he quickly turned over the strike to his more senior teammate.
But panic set in when Ali was dismissed on the fifth ball of the penultimate over, with Naseem then deciding to take it upon himself from that point with Pakistan still requiring 13 runs to register the victory.

Sharjah, Sep 2 (Ians) Pakistan skipper Babar Azam was one happy man after his team cruised into the Super Four stage of Asia Cup 2022 on the back of 155-run thrashing of Hong Kong. But Azam was more pleased with how Pakistan batted and finished the innings, calling the efforts ‘outstanding’.
After being bowled out for 147 in 19.5 overs against India in their Asia Cup 2022 opener, sparkling knocks from Mohammad Rizwan (78 not out off 57 balls), Fakhar Zaman (53 off 41 balls) and Khushdil Shah (35 not out off 15 balls) carried Pakistan to a daunting 193/2 against Hong Kong. The pacers and spinners then combined to bundle out Hong Kong for just 38.
The comprehensive win also sets up another India-Pakistan showdown in the Super Four stage at Dubai on Sunday, exactly a week after their meeting in the first Group A match of the tournament.
“Very nice victory for us. Weren’t able to get our shots away initially with the bat.

Dubai, Aug 29 (Ians) In the Men’s T20 World Cup held in the UAE last year, Hardik Pandya was a pale shadow of his all-round skills and far from his fittest self. He faced 45 balls with the bat and bowled only four overs, the effect of which was seen in India’s early exit from the tournament.
Ten months later, Pandya is back in the Blue jersey and in Sunday’s marquee clash against Pakistan in Group A of Asia Cup 2022, his all-round skills were the driving force behind India sealing a five-wicket win in an engrossing match.
With the ball, Pandya used his short ball to good effect and got extra bounce as well on a two-paced pitch to break Pakistan’s innings mid-way with his spell of 3-25. Then, after Pakistan were bowled out for 147, India were in a scenario where 59 runs were needed off the last six overs.

Dubai, Aug 29 (Ians) Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja’s heroics with the bat helped India defeat Pakistan by five wickets to win their first Group A match in Asia Cup 2022 at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday. After Pakistan made 147 all out in 19.5 overs, India needed 59 off the last six overs on a two-paced pitch.
From there, Pandya (33 not out) and Jadeja (35) shared a stand of 52 runs off just 29 balls. Even though the left-handed Jadeja fell in the final over, Pandya finished off things with a six over long-on to take India over the line and add another thrilling chapter in the history of India-Pakistan clashes.
Just like Pakistan, India had an eventful first over. Debutant pacer Naseem Shah struck on just his second T20I ball, as K.L Rahul inside-edged to his stumps. Virat Kohli, playing in his 100th T20I, was dropped by Fakhar Zaman at second slip while chasing a wide one.

Rotterdam, Aug 22 (Ians) The Netherlands produced a compelling performance to come close to beating Pakistan in the third and final Odi but the visitors held their nerve to win by nine runs and clinch the series 3-0, here on Sunday.
Despite the 0-3 loss, the Netherlands showcased fight and played some exemplary cricket right through the series.
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Pakistan didn’t have a great start as the Netherlands’ bowlers impressed with the new ball. Vivian Kingma prized out debutant Abdullah Shafique in the second over of the innings.

Fresh off a trip to Egypt — and a Golden Globe win for leading man Ramy Youssef — Ramy‘s protagonist returns in the Season 2 premiere pretty much where he left off at the end of Season 1: religiously lost and emotionally unsatisfied. His trip to his ancestral homeland did not go as planned, ending with the death of his grandfather and a romantic encounter with his cousin.
Yet there is hope for him yet in the form of Sheikh Ali (played by True Detective‘s Mahershala Ali), a spiritual guide who agrees to take our titular hero on a journey of self-discovery and reflection.

As more people spend their twenties developing into who they want to become rather than settling down and committing to their current identity, more TV shows are focusing on that extended maturation period between teenage folly and adult responsibilities. From “Girls” to “Superstore,” and “You’re the Worst” to “New Girl,” plenty of comedies have mined the awkward and exciting time when personal decisions come with extra pressure, whether it’s from parents impatient to see children follow in their footsteps, the imposing demands of societal standards, or an internal desire to just hurry up and figure out your life already.
Viewers wouldn’t be blamed for shouting that at select 20-something TV characters, given how many shows have tackled this modern day “arrested development” (and how many have done it badly). But in its first season, “Ramy” found multiple ways to freshen things up. Framing the eponymous character’s quest...

When Hulu’s Ramy debuted in 2019, it won the audience award at SXSW for episodic premieres, netted creator/writer/star Ramy Youssef a Golden Globe for Best Actor in Television Series – Musical or Comedy, and garnered widespread critical acclaim. Still, while onstage accepting his award, Youssef joked “I know you guys haven’t seen my show.” So how do you get audiences to tune in to an autofiction about a first generation Egyptian-American caught between living a millennial lifestyle while maintaining his Muslim beliefs? Simple: you add Academy Award-winner and fellow American Muslim Mahershala Ali.
With added star power and a darker tone, Ramy Season 2 continues to offer a fresh perspective on tried and true sitcom beats while also focusing deeper on spirituality and how the pursuit of spirituality can sometimes be a selfish endeavor. The season picks...

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Saeed Akhtar Mirza's Naseem (1995) is now showing in the series A Journey into Indian Cinema.“The karsevaks in Ayodhya are gathering with bricks. There is tension in Faizabad. Muslim families are leaving…”Mere hours before a right-wing Hindu mob of 150,000 people tore down the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, on December 6, 1992, the eponymous teenaged protagonist (Mayoori Kango) reads out the day’s news to her ailing grandfather (Kaifi Azmi) in Saeed Akhtar Mirza’s Naseem. “That’s enough, darling,” he stops her.“We had a dream in 1947 about the kind of country we wanted to be. Exclusive: We’ll be seeing more of Uncle Naseem in Hulu’s Ramy. Laith Nakli, who recurred as the character opposite Ramy Youssef in season 1, has been promoted to series regular for the upcoming second season.
Ramy’s Uncle Naseem (Nakli) is a loud, opinionated, misogynist who owns a successful diamond store in New York, where he gives Ramy a job in hopes of teaching him to “be a man”. Charismatic in his own horrible way, Uncle Naseem has the strength of his convictions and isn’t afraid to stand up (or get beaten up) when he sees something that he feels is wrong.
Ramy is based on the real-life experiences and comedy of Youssef, who stars. Co-created and co-written by Youssef with Katcher and Ryan Welch, the series takes viewers into the world of Ramy, a first-generation American Muslim on a spiritual journey in his politically divided New Jersey neighborhood.
