Compared to other superhero franchises, The Dark Knight trilogy features a disproportionate number of villains. A few of the standout antagonists in The Dark Knight Rises are Tom Hardy as Bane, Cillian Murphy as Jonathan Crane, and Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent.
Jonathan Nolan, who co-wrote the screenplays for The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises with his brother Christopher Nolan, the director, recently claimed that another villain who was never seen in a movie was supposed to make an appearance.

During an interview with Happy Sad Confused, the Person of Interest creator, 47, talked about the antagonists in the seventh-highest-grossing film before focusing on Bane (Tom Hardy). Nolan talked about exploring “ideas about the Riddler”.

Midway through the first big budget Batman film in 1989, Jack Nicholson’s Joker takes a moment to pout. The title character has just run off in the Batmobile while Mistah J stands by stunned and dejected. Finally he even laments, “Where does he get those wonderful toys?”
The irony of this scene is that, sure, the Batmobile is cool (especially that model), but for generation after generation, the man in the purple suit is always the one audiences savor playtime with. Whether it’s Nicholson hamming it up for ‘80s audiences, Heath Ledger vamping like a rock star from hell, or Joaquin Phoenix turning Travis Bickle into a clown, it seems our hearts are always won over by the guy with green hair. Consider that the Joker is one of only three roles that has produced multiple Oscar winners—putting Ledger and Phoenix into elite company with Marlon Brando and...

The Riddler: Year One is a unique, even historic comic book event. Not only is it a DC book that functions as a prequel to one of the biggest movies in the year in The Batman, telling the tale of how a put upon, socially awkward accountant eventually becomes a terrifying serial killer and Gotham City villain of note, but it’s written by the actor who played the character himself, Paul Dano. We spoke with Dano about how this book helped him utilize some of the backstory he had created in his mind when formulating his Riddler performance, and you can read that here (or listen to our full interview), but there’s one subtle piece of history tucked away in the book that ties it not only to the very first Riddler story ever, but even the Batman TV series of the 1960s.

This article contains Moon Knight spoilers
When the first episode of Moon Knight hit, comic fans familiar with the character were a bit at a disadvantage. They already had an idea of what was going on, killing some of the drama that those uninitiated were experiencing. While the second episode explains the basics between Steven, Marc, and Khonshu, we also learn more about what makes their dynamic in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so different. Though Marc is the Avatar/Fist of Khonshu, we also know that Arthur Harrow was the previous Moon Knight and, if Marc is ever taken off the table, his estranged wife Layla will be the next one.
This gives Marc bigger stakes and more of a reason to keep fighting other than paying Khonshu back for keeping him alive. It’s a nice twist on the trope of a superhero having to cut ties with his...

There are many different types of Batman villains, but ultimately, few are a match for Bruce Wayne's tremendous intellect. But there is at least one rogue that frequently attempts to go toe to toe with the Dark Knight in this area: the Riddler. Created by Bill Finger and Dick Sprang in 1948, Edward "E." Nigma (also sometimes spelled Nygma) debuted in "Detective Comics" #140. As his name suggests, the Riddler has a penchant for puzzles or riddles of any kind. In fact, it's more like a compulsion. His look has evolved quite a bit over the years, as he was initially known for his question mark-covered green bodysuit that...

I know every comic book publisher loves a ‘special’ issue, an ‘anniversary’ issue, or a ‘reached a big number’ issue, but at first glance a 144 page monster book for issue 1027 of Detective Comics seems a bit of a stretch. Longevity, sure, but we just had a whole raft of anniversary specials did we not? Then you realise. Detective Comics #27, back in 1939, was not only the very first appearance of Batman, but became the title that led to National Periodicals eventually becoming DC Comics. They liked the series so much they named a company after it. So, in comic book terms, Detective Comics #27 is probably the second most important published, beaten out only by Action Comics #1. DC, for probably both genuinely wanting to honour Detective Comics legacy and to squeeze that Batman cash cow just a little bit more, have thrown...

Here's a look at the best and worst appearances of the Joker on Batman: The Animated Series.
It really is amazing how many things Batman: The Animated Series got right. Whether it was the fantastic writing, art design, or voice acting, it always got right to the soul of its characters. Mr. Freeze was in an issue of Grant Morrison’s Animal Man with the joke being that he was a forgotten relic lost to obscurity. Two years later, "Heart of Ice" defined him as such an interesting character that they went on to put him in a movie.
Not a good movie, but still! Arnold Schwarzenegger played him! That’s huge!
The Joker was already popular thanks to many factors, but Mark Hamill brought some extra life to the character and gave us what many would consider the ultimate take on the Clown Prince of Crime.

With the box office less than hoped for, Warner Bros. decided it was time to entice parents and the children who stayed away from the darker Batman Returns. Despite the comic book source material of the late 1980s being grim and gritty, Warner saw the dollar signs after the success of Batman the Animated Series and wanted those younger viewers.
Batman Forever and Batman & Robin are out this week in newly restored 4k Uhd editions, part of Warner Home Entertainment’s 30th anniversary salute to Burton’s Batman. That and Batman Returns were reviewed yesterday.
Forever is transitional, keeping a lot of the menace from the previous films and replicating the two villains are better than one formula.
Desiring to go younger, the execs turned from Tim Burton to another visual stylist, Joel Schumacher. He was ordered to lighten things up and finally bring in Robin. Burton, star Michael Keaton,...

We look at what each of the movie Joker actors have brought to the role, from Cesar Romero in Batman '66 to Joaquin Phoenix.
Whether or not you liked Jared Leto as the Joker in Suicide Squad, you can't argue with a $746 million in worldwide box office. That 2015 movie once again reminded Warner Bros. that the Clown Prince of Crime is their most bankable screen villain, and not even anemic reviews could keep audiences away. For that reason, it's no surprise we are on the verge of getting our first solo Joker movie, this time starring Joaquin Phoenix in a completely original concept from director Todd Phillips and producer Martin Scorseese.
The Joker is a character historically infamous for his theatricality; he’s a scion of chaos, the maestro of malevolence, and a twisty yin to Batman’s straight-laced yang. He’s a comic icon that was...
