Maybe it’s because they’ve been making movies together — from internet shorts to 2012’s “V/H/S” to 2019’s “Ready or Not” — for more than 12 years. Maybe it’s because they’re promoting their latest film — the new “Scream,” which is also the fifth “Scream,” but is just titled “Scream” — remotely during a global pandemic. Maybe it’s because they’re three white dudes. But when Tyler Gillett, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Chad Villella, the filmmaking collective known as Radio Silence, first sign on to their Zoom interview with Variety, it takes them about five seconds to realize that by sheer coincidence, they’re all wearing simple black T-shirts.
“Nice wardrobe coordination!” says Gillett, 39, with a gleeful smile.
“We’ve spent so much time together, we’ve morphed into one thing,” adds Bettinelli-Olpin, 43, cackling.
“A Voltron of anti-style,” says Villella, 44, which only makes the three laugh harder.

The film collective Radio Silence first catapulted to fame over a decade ago, riding the success of YouTube videos that used an interactive feature the site has since abandoned. In the past five years, the trio have directed two studio films, with their second, “Ready or Not” opening this week — and nothing about the work they’ve produced on that scale suggests they’ve lost their Diy ethos.
But much has changed since the group’s early years, when one of them parlayed an office gig at New Line to sneak into the facility on the weekends to make future viral shorts with memorable names like “Roommate Alien Prank Goes Bad” (a smash hit with over 33 million views) and “The Time Machine: An Interactive Adventure.” Reflecting on that era, the filmmakers said in a recent interview, there’s no way they could have achieved the same success today.

YouTube has ceased production on its daily news program YouTube Nation, but viewers who want to stay in the know about side-wide goings on now have a new series they can count on. It's called The Creator Show, and it will highlight notable creators while also discussing recent changes to the world's most popular video site.
The Creator Show is hosted by Rob Polonsky, an online video veteran who previously created compelling interactive videos as one-third of the YouTube channel Chad, Matt & Rob. Polonsky now works as a producer at YouTube, and as the host of The Creator Show, he chats with YouTubers inside the brand new YouTube Space in New York.
The first episode can be found on the official YouTube Creators channel. It features an interview with Grace Helbig about her new book, which is bookended by a pair of segments. In the first, Kali Muscle appears to...

Ashton Kutcher is a man full of ideas—and to that, he also knows a good one when he see it. Back in February, the actor and entrepreneur dropped by the La edition of Startup Weekend, a 54-hour no-sleep grindfest of tech entrepreneurs tasked with taking an idea from concept to launched startup in just one weekend. Out of it came some pretty clever products, like Zaarly, that Kutcher himself backed along with other investors. That got Kutcher and partner Jason Goldberg and their team at Katalyst thinking. Could this same format be done with online video content ideas? That’s when they looped in a major sponsor, Intel, and came up with IdeaJam, a 48-hour event held April 1-3 with 48 digital filmmakers forming six teams tasked with pitching, creating, adapting, building, devising, and editing their ideas under the over-arching “What Inspires You?” theme. Now video from the event, shot documentary style,...

Up and down the video lists of YouTube’s top creators, hyperlinked annotations are ubiquitous. But in their three years as a supported feature on the platform, few have actually built their entire channels around them. The few that have honed this craft of viewer-guided storytelling have learned that it’s one way to keep viewers engaged in their work—rather than serving weekly snackables to their fans, creators like Chad Matt & Rob are serving bi-monthly feasts. Their latest interactive, The Treasure Hunt which came to be after teaming up with TV prodCo Fremantle, first screened for audiences at the Anaheim International Film Festival back in August. Now last week their first stab at the western was released on their YouTube channel. Cmr’s Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin directed the Hunt, which stars Bettinelli-Olpin alongside partners Chad Villella and Rob Polonsky. Brands are starting to get all gooey when you mention an interactive web series to them, and one of the more ‘progressive’ brands to play in the online video sandbox, Axe, decided to throw their hat at this latest trend on YouTube. That meant teaming up with arguably the godfathers of the YouTube interactive video format—Chad, Matt & Rob-who have been experimenting with a choose-your-own-adventure style ever since YouTube rolled out its in-video annotations technology back in 2008. The latest project, The Teleporter (below), marks the first time a major brand sponsor has backed one of their highly popular interactive adventures. For Chad Villella, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Rob Polonsky, the young creators seem to have found their sweet spot in online video, having recently teamed up with TV production studio Fremantle Media for their forthcoming western, The Treasure Hunt. Ever since YouTube rolled out annotations two years ago, we’ve seen all kinds of games and even blatant attempts at gaming the in-video links. But for Chad Villella, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Rob Polonsky—or ChadMattandRob as they are known to their YouTube faithful, they saw annotations as a whole new way to tell stories on the popular video platform. The trio, along with Lonely Island member Jonah Goldstein, whipped up a string of elaborate interactive comedy series starting with 2008’s breakout The Time Machine, which scored several million views across its web of “episodes.” They followed it up with The Murder in 2009 and then this year’s The Birthday Party which bowed in January (see below). Now the trailer for their latest interactive quest—The Treasure Hunt—hit the internet today (above) expected to release sometime later this summer. One of the first assignments I received upon entering the hallowed tubes of Tilzy.TV was to watch an interactive adventure about a time machine. Lovable little scamp that I was, I got a little overexcited. Luckily, nobody much minded, least of all the video’s makers, Chad, Matt & Rob (and Jonah). A few weeks ago, Rob Polonsky had a minor lapse in judgment and told me that he and the fellas just finished a new interactive adventure, The Murder. He assumed, since I gushed over his previous project, I was disposed to loving his particular blend of comedic storytelling and I would follow-up with another highly positive review. His assumption was correct. I suppose it would be possible to concoct some blather about how choose-your-own-ending online stories are a perfect medium for our Add-addled populace. Short clips with multiple options of consequence-free errors in judgment seem like an ultimate American combination.
