Manchester, July 21 (Ians) Former England captain Nasser Hussain has urged the Ben Stokes-led side to be “ultra-aggressive” on Day Three of the fourth Ashes Test in Manchester, especially with heavy rain predicted for days four and five.
Opener Zak Crawley slammed a magnificent 189 off 182 deliveries and propelled England to take a lead of 67 runs after ending day two of the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford on 384-4. Moeen Ali and Joe Root also supported him with their respective half-centuries.
Crawley led England’s batting charge from the front, hitting 12 fours and a maximum to hit a sensational maiden Ashes century in just 93 balls, as Australia were left rattled by the opener’s blazing knock.
“I think they’ve (England) got to go really ultra-aggressive. Either way — if they get bowled out, the game has progressed. You don’t want to be left on Sunday night thinking: ‘I wish we...

London, July 11 (Ians) Claiming that “it is time for the global game to reset”, the McC World Cricket Committee (Wcc) has proposed for the International Cricket Council (Icc) to establish two strategic funds — one to sustain the Test cricket programme across the world and other for the development of the women’s game.
To help identify nations in need of support to sustain Test cricket, the Wcc has asked Icc to undertake a Test match financial audit to analyze the difference between operational costs and commercial.
This need could be subsequently addressed via a separate Test fund, established to protect the sanctity of Test match cricket, the Wcc recommended following the first meeting of 2023 in Dubai, in which it concluded that the game was at a crossroads with intervention required.
The committee has now released specific recommendations for the Icc to help ensure the long-term prosperity of the men’s and women’s international games.

London, June 28 (Ians) Australia enjoyed a strong start to the second Ashes Test as they ended day one on 339/5 against hosts England at Lord’s, here on Wednesday.
David Warner (66), Travis Head (77) and Steve Smith (85*) all scored half-centuries on the opening day as Australia put some miles into the legs of England’s seam attack, with Ben Stokes having included an additional pace option rather than a spinner in his side to replace the recovering Moeen Ali, reports Icc.
That additional pacer was the pick of the quick bowlers for England on the day, with Josh Tongue removing both of the Australia openers with excellent deliveries and finishing with figures of 2/88.
But, on an overcast day, England’s bowling posed surprisingly few questions of an Australian top order who piled on the runs.

Ashes 2023: Would give England the edge; thinking and captaincy was brilliant, says Kumar Sangakkara
Birmingham, June 18 (Ians) Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara feels England have the edge over Australia in the ongoing first Ashes Test at Edgbaston, saying the captaincy and thinking in taking a slender seven-run lead has been brilliant.
England took the last five Australian wickets for 75 runs to bowl them out for 386 in the first session of day three’s play, with Ollie Robinson taking three of those scalps after a wicketless performance on Day Two’s play. For Australia, Usman Khawaja top-scored with 141, his first Test century in England.
“It is set up wonderfully and there will be an exciting two sessions from here. I think it is pretty even but the way the innings ended I would give England (the edge). The thinking was brilliant, the captaincy was brilliant. England are not going to settle for draws and now it will be if they can dominate with the bat after lunch.

London, June 10 (Ians) India opener Shubman Gill’s dismissal, caused by a one-handed catch by Cameron Green in the second innings of the World Test Championship (Wtc) Final at The Oval here on Saturday has triggered a widespread debate on whether the ball had touched the ground or not.
Gill was out when Boland extracted an outside edge off his defensive prod, and the ball flew low to Green’s left at third slip. The tall all-rounder took out his left hand and took a one-handed screamer, with the third umpire Richard Kettleborough adjudging it as a clean catch after viewing multiple replays of it.
As soon as the ‘out’ decision was shown on the giant screen, Gill and India skipper Rohit Sharma were left unconvinced by the decision as tea was taken immediately, with fans debating whether the batter was out or not, as well as if Green had...

Jaipur, May 15 (Ians) Rajasthan Royals head coach and director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara admitted that his batters got carried away in the power-play, resulting in them being reduced to 28/5 inside the powerplay and eventually crashed to 59 all out to suffer a 112-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore.
“Yes, it was a poor batting performance. I thought we bowled really well to keep them under 170, which was going to be a good chase on this pitch. We got a little bit carried away in the powerplay, thinking we had to score too many runs there, trying to be ultra-positive.”
“It was a case of trying to build partnerships, but unfortunately, coming out of the powerplay, we were five down, which was the end of the game,” said Sangakkara in the post-match press conference.

Jaipur, May 6 (Ians) Rajasthan Royals head coach and director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara admitted that his team’s performance in a nine-wicket defeat to Gujarat Titans at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium was “embarrassing”, while adding that the inaugural Ipl winners couldn’t make the most out of the good start they had.
Electing to bat first, Rajasthan suffered an unbelievable batting meltdown from 47/1 in five overs to being 118 all out in 17.5 overs, recording the second-lowest total of Ipl 2023, which Gujarat chased down in 13.5 overs.
“It is embarrassing for anyone when you don’t play well. We were very, very poor in terms of capitalising on the starts we got. We were showing intent for a while, but we were a little bit reckless, and then we had very, very little intent against the two spinners,” he said in the post-match press conference.

Jaipur, April 20 (Ians) Rajasthan Royals head coach and director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara admitted that his batters weren’t committed enough to take the attack to Lucknow Super Giants leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi in their ten-run defeat in an Ipl 2023 game at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
In his four overs, Bishnoi didn’t take a wicket, but gave away only 25 runs. In the 17th over, Riyan Parag and Devdutt Padikkal struggled to score big off Bishnoi, who conceded only six runs to inch Lucknow closer towards victory on a two-paced pitch.
“Unfortunately, we lost three wickets in three overs. We still should have gotten over the line. We had enough batting in the shed. We left it a little bit too late and needed too many boundaries in the end.

Ahmedabad, April 17 (Ians) Rajasthan Royals head coach and director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara lauded skipper Sanju Samson for bringing out his attacking game against Gujarat Titans’ leg-spinner Rashid Khan, saying the ‘hat-trick’ of sixes he hit against him was the game-changer in swinging the momentum in their favour.
With 112 more runs off 48 balls, not many gave Rajasthan a chance for a victory as they were 66/4 in 12 overs. But Samson unleashed by taking 20 runs off Rashid Khan in the 13th over via a hat-trick of sixes to eventually make 60 while Shimron Hetmyer smashed a whirlwind unbeaten 56 off just 26 balls to give Rajasthan an improbable three-wicket victory.
“Not just you got us through the powerplay, but that Rashid Khan over and then how you kicked on from there, that was the game changer. Their best bowler, some say the best T20 spinner in the world, was completely caught off the guard,” said...

Hyderabad, April 1 (Ians) Sunday afternoon’s clash will see two former champions Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals face-off at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. With equal firepower in both batting and bowling, stage is set for a high-octane clash between two teams that look strong on paper.
With Bhuvneshwar Kumar leading the side for his team’s opening game in Ipl 2023 as Aiden Markram is on international duty, he felt the bowling attack has a lot of experience in them, including tearaway pacer Umran Malik, whose stocks have risen since bursting through in 2021 edition of the tournament.
He also picked 22 wickets from 14 matches at an average of 20.18 and economy rate of 9.03, claiming one four-wicket haul and a five-wicket haul respectively in Ipl 2022, while playing an instrumental role in picking wickets for his franchise in the middle overs phase. He was also named as the emerging player of the season at the end of the competition.

New Delhi, Feb 24 (Ians) The McC World Cricket Committee (Wcc) has shown unanimous support to the law regarding the act of bowlers running out non-strikers over leaving their ground early, calling the law not only correct and necessary but issued a ‘call for calm’ to the global game.

Lucknow, Jan 29 (Ians) A sensational performance by the bowlers followed by Suryakumar Yadav’s hard-fought knock guided India to a nervy six-wicket win over New Zealand in the second T20I and levelled the three-match series 1-1 on a spin-friendly pitch at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, here on Sunday.
The low-scoring encounter also witnessed an unusual feat as not a single six was hit on 239 legal deliveries bowled during the second T20I.
Spinners spun the web and took the first five wickets of New Zealand, who never got the momentum throughout the batting innings. The Indian pacers then did a brilliant finishing job as the visitors were restricted to 99/8 in 20 overs.
Arshdeep Singh (2-7) was the most successful bowler for India while Yuzvendra Chahal (1-4), Kuldeep Yadav (1-17), Deepak Hooda (1-17), Washington Sundar (1/17) and Hardik Pandya (1/25) also picked vital wickets at regular intervals.

On the other hand, Mitchell opened up in the later half of the innings to finish on 59 not out off 30 balls, hitting three fours and fives sixes. He also took 27 runs off the final over by Arshdeep Singh to inject some momentum in the innings after losing wickets in quick succession in the middle overs.
For India, Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav gave away a combined 56 runs while picking three wickets, while the fast bowlers gave away 119 runs despite picking as many wickets as their spin counterparts.

Ranchi, Jan 27 (Ians) India captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to bowl first against New Zealand in the first T20I of the three-match series at the Jsca International Stadium in Ranchi, here on Friday.
“Looks like a very good track. The reason behind the decision to bowl first is that the ground is going to get quite wet, I can see some dew now itself. Just go out there and play the best cricket we know.”
“It’s a young side, everyone’s ready to go. We will focus on playing good cricket. Playing the ODIs before T20Is makes it easy to pass on. For a lot of them it is an experience just being in the team. Yuzi (Yuzvendra Chahal), Mukesh (Kumar), Jitesh (Sharma) and Prithvi (Shaw) miss out,” Hardik said at the toss.

Indore, Jan 25 (Ians) New Zealand opener Devon Conway, whose superb 100-ball 138 went in vain as India won the third Odi to clean sweep the series, said his team’s failure to build more partnerships and putting the Indian bowlers under pressure led to their defeat at the Holkar Stadium here.
Chasing a mammoth total of 385/9l, New Zealand got off to the worst possible start as Hardik Pandya removed Finn Allen for a duck in the very first over. However, the early wicket didn’t affect Conway and Henry Nicholls much as they raised 106 runs for the second wicket before Nicholls was out.
Conway and Daryl Mitchell then took the score to 184. But Shardul Thakur scalped three back-to-back wickets of Mitchell (24), Tom Latham (0) and Glenn Phillips (5) to swing the contest back into India’s favour, leaving New Zealand struggling at 200/5 after 27.4 overs. They were eventually bowled out for 295 in 41.2 overs.

Indore, Jan 24 (Ians) Captain Rohit Sharma, who smashed a long-awaited Odi century in India’s thumping 90-run win in the third and final game against New Zealand, revealed that the knock meant a lot to him, adding that he might haven’t got that magical figure but been batting well.
Once known for his daddy hundreds in Odi cricket, Rohit had not scored a century in the 50-over format since January 2020. He was getting fifties but failed to convert those into hundreds.
However, on Tuesday, the 35-year-old ended his Odi century drought, scoring 101 off 85, his 30th ton during a 212-run partnership with Shubman Gill (112 off 78) for the opening wicket, which helped India register a convincing win.
“Today’s hundred means a lot to me. I’ve been batting well, so it was just about going that extra mile,” Rohit said in the post-match presentation.

Indore, Jan 24 (Ians) New Zealand captain Tom Latham won the toss and opted to field first in the third and final Odi against India at the Holkar Cricket Stadium, here on Tuesday.
New Zealand, who are seeking the consolation win, made one change in their playing XI with Jacob Duffy replacing Henry Shipley.
“We are gonna have a bowl, it is a good surface and it will get better under lights. We have put on good performances in the past and will look to put another good performance here. It will be high-scoring and the nature of the boundaries are short. We have got one change, Jacob Duffy comes in for Henry Shipley,” said Latham at the toss.
On the other hand, India, who have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, made two changes as Umran Malik and Yuzvendra Chahal come in for Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami.

Indore, Jan 23 (Ians) After taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match Odi series, India could be looking at making some changes to their playing eleven for the third and final game as they seek a 3-0 finish against New Zealand at Holkar Stadium on Tuesday.
After a 3-0 series victory over Sri Lanka, India wouldn’t want to let their guard down in a dead rubber and inflict a series sweep over a New Zealand missing stalwarts like Kane Williamson and Tim Southee.
New Zealand, on the other hand, will have pride to play for in Indore and a win would do their confidence a world of good ahead of the three T20Is against India, where Mitchell Santner will be captaining them.

New Delhi, Jan 23 (Ians) Talismanic India batters Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, and fast-bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya on Monday were named in the Icc Men’s T20I team of the Year for 2022, which is captained by England’s T20 World Cup winning skipper Jos Buttler.
Others who made the cut for the Men’s T20I team of the Year 2022 include Pakistan opener Mohammad Rizwan and pacer Haris Rauf, New Zealand batter Glenn Phillips, Zimbabwe’s off-spin all-rounder Sikandar Raza, England’s Sam Curran, who was Player of the Tournament at T20 World Cup, Sri Lanka’s leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga and Ireland’s left-arm pacer Josh Little.
The latter half of 2022 saw Kohli showing glimpses of his vintage run-making self. He took the T20 Asia Cup in the UAE by storm, finishing as the second-highest run-getter with 276 runs in five games.

Kolkata, Jan 12 (Ians) Ahead of the start of the second Odi between India and Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens here, former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara rang the ‘famous’ ceremonial bell. Sangakkara is part of the English language commentary team for the ongoing white-ball series between India and Sri Lanka.
“Former Sri Lanka Cricket Captain Kumara Sangakara and Cab President Snehasish Ganguly on the occasion of ceremonial bell ringing before the 2nd India Sri Lanka Odi at Eden Gardens today,” wrote the Cricket Association of Bengal (Cab) in an Instagram post.
Cab is also planning to give a tribute to legendary footballer Pele during the match, apart from a laser show in the pipeline as well. Coming to the match, Sri Lanka included debutant batter Nuwanidu Fernando and fast bowler Lahiru Kumara in the playing eleven in place of the injured duo of Pathum Nissanka and Dilshan Madushanka.

New Delhi, Jan 4 (Ians) Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara believes that overseas nations like England and Australia have learnt to play spin better than subcontinent sides as cricket has changed a lot over the years.
“I think cricket’s changed quite a lot since 2011, in those days I would say that in Asian conditions, it favours the subcontinental players. But over the years I think that England, Australia, New Zealand have learnt to play spin a lot better than even the subcontinental sides,” Sangakkara said on Star Sports show.
“You see a lot of reverse sweeps, paddle shots and sweeps, all of these new strokes using their feet. I think that has revolutionised the way we look at cricket in the subcontinent. Ipl has helped a lot in terms of exposure as well,” he added.

New Delhi, Dec 29 (Ians) Sri Lanka batting great Kumar Sangakkara has urged India middle-order batter Sanju Samson to keep things simple and to concentrate on his batting when the T20I series starts from January 3.
India’s T20I series against Sri Lanka, which will also kickstart their home season, presents a chance for Samson to keep himself in the reckoning for the scheme of things in the shortest format of the game.
In 16 T20Is since his debut in 2015, Samson has been given sporadic chances and managed to make only 296 runs, with just one half-century, 77 off 42 balls against Ireland at Malahide in June 2022, against his name.
“He’s got to keep things simple, just concentrate on batting. The Ipl is one thing, playing for India is another. What you got to concentrate on, as Sanju Samson in the Indian side, is understanding what your job is. When you go out,...

New Delhi, Dec 5 (Ians) New Zealand’s middle-order batter Glenn Phillips said he would “absolutely love” to captain the senior men’s Odi side one day and added that he enjoys being in leadership positions while featuring in the game.
Currently, New Zealand have Kane Williamson as their all-format captain. “I’d absolutely love it. I did it for quite a few years in younger cricket and the leadership group is quite wide and I’d love to work my way in there. I really enjoy getting around the guys and trying to push the team,” said Phillips on Senz’s The Run Home show.
Phillips, 25, is a wicketkeeper-batsman who has been impressive for New Zealand in white-ball cricket. He can also chip in with some overs of off-spin bowling, which means he can truly be an all-round option for the Blackcaps in future.
“I think there’s always chat going around.

Mount Maunganui, Nov 20 (Ians) New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson has won the toss and elected to bowl first against India in the second T20I at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui on Sunday.
After the T20I series opener was washed out without a ball being bowled at Sky Stadium, Wellington, on Friday, there is a forecast of rain in the second T20I. But as of now, the atmosphere in the stadium has been dry with overcast skies.
Williamson said the pitch and overcast conditions prompted him to bowl first, with Adam Milne coming in for Trent Boult in the playing eleven. “It’s been under covers for a large part, and also potentially some weather around. Always a great occasion when you get to play against India,” he said.
India captain Hardik Pandya feels the batters will have to assess the conditions early to post a good first-innings total.

Mount Maunganui, Nov 19 (Ians) After rain caused the first T20I between India and New Zealand at Sky Stadium to be washed out, it may again play a spoilsport when the two teams will be playing in the second match at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Sunday.
Though New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson was hopeful of sunshine coming in Sunday’s sell-out match at his hometown, that may not be the case. With rain predicted for all day and precipitation levels between 40-97 per cent, there is a possibility of rain again halting India and New Zealand’s quest for rebuilding their T20I sides.
One would be hoping that Rishabh Pant gets a decent run as an opener against New Zealand. Pant, who burst on the scene with blistering performances in Ipl 2016 just after catching everyone’s eye with his exploits in U19 World Cup earlier that year in Bangladesh,...

Mount Maunganui, Nov 19 (Ians) New Zealand’s middle-order batter Glenn Phillips has been in awe of the audacious strokeplay coming from the bat of India’s swashbuckling batter Suryakumar Yadav, saying he cannot dream of doing things which the Mumbai-based batter has done this year.
Both Suryakumar and Phillips had a brilliant time with the bat in the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia. But it was Suryakumar, currently the top-ranked T20I batter, who made a huge splash in the tournament, making 239 runs in six innings with his jaw-dropping 360-degree style of batting.
“He’s absolutely incredible. The things that he does I wouldn’t even dream of doing. I would love to try but we have very different games. The wrist strength that he’s got to be able to hit balls for six in extremely awkward areas is a talent you rarely see,” Phillips was quoted as saying by stuff.

Wellington, Nov 18 (Ians) The T20I series opener between New Zealand and India at Sky Stadium, Wellington has been washed out due to persistent rain on Friday, without a ball being bowled and the toss was not even held.
As per the weather forecast for Wellington, there was 90-100 per cent rain forecasted during the match time, which led to covers remaining on the pitch all the time. Though rain stopped for a few minutes, it came back again, heavier than it was, leading to players indulging in a session of football-volleyball indoors.
The latest cut-off time for the match to begin was 9:46pm local time, with a minimum of five overs per side needed to constitute an official T20I match. But heavy rain washed out that prospect as well, leading to Friday’s match being abandoned.

Wellington, Nov 17 (Ians) After being beaten in the semifinals of the T20 World Cup in Australia, a new-look India will be back in action in the shortest format against New Zealand in the T20I series opener at Sky Stadium in Wellington on Friday.
With stand-in head coach Vvs Laxman insisting that the Hardik Pandya-led side, without many regular stars, will be looking to play fearless and flexible cricket during the series, it also kickstarts the road towards the 2024 T20 World Cup.
After going out of the tournament in the Super 12 stage in 2021, India’s adopted an ultra-attacking approach with the bat, which gave them results in the bilateral series. But by the time T20 World Cup 2022 came in Australia, they were back to conservative batting approach, especially in the first six overs, which paled badly in comparison to England’s swashbuckling play with both bat and ball, eventually...

Auckland, Nov 15 (Ians) New Zealand have left out two of their most experienced players — opener Martin Guptill and left-arm quick Trent Boult — for their white-ball series at home against India, with Kane Williamson continuing to lead the side in the three T20Is and three Odi series beginning at Wellington on November 18.

Sydney, Nov 9 (Ians) New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to bat first against Pakistan in the first semifinal of the Icc Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 at the Sydney Cricket Ground (Scg), here on Wednesday.
New Zealand, who have played impressive cricket throughout the tournament so far, didn’t make any change in their playing XI for this clash.
“We are gonna have a bat. Used surface, not much grass on it. We’re going with the same team. Same pitch but different I reckon. It’s important we adjust to those changing conditions and assess quickly. There are a few unknowns, important we stick to our plans,” said Williamson at the toss.
“Our focus is on this game, what we want to do here and really try and express ourselves with the cricket that we’ve been playing,” he added.

Sydney, Nov 8 (Ians) A resurgent Pakistan and clinical New Zealand, who have had contrasting campaigns so far, will lock horns in a mouth-watering first semifinal of the Icc Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 at the Sydney Cricket Ground (Scg), here on Wednesday, with a common goal to book the berth in the all-important final of the mega event.
The Babaz Azam-led side lost their first two matches of the T20 World Cup against India and Zimbabwe and were on the verge of getting knocked out. However, they performed when it mattered, got a lifeline and now have a golden opportunity to go all the way in the tournament.
On the other hand, New Zealand began their campaign in style by thrashing the hosts Australia and eventually won four out of five Super 12 matches. They just lost to England in a high-quality contest but otherwise have been quite clinical in their efforts so far.

Sydney, Oct 21 (Ians) The Super 12 stage of the Men’s T20 World Cup will open up with the re-match of the 2021 final at Dubai between Australia and New Zealand at a full-house Sydney Cricket Ground (Scg) on Saturday.
As another chapter of the trans-tasman rivalry awaits cricket fans, the eyes of both Australia and New Zealand will be on the skies apart from the pitch and on-field conditions with 90 rain forecast threatening to disrupt the proceedings.
“We haven’t seen the pitch either. It was covered all this morning. We won’t confirm an 11 just yet because, if it’s short, then it will be likely to change. So we just have to wait and see tomorrow much closer to the match and have a look at the pitch,” said New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson on rain being a factor in the pre-match press conference.

Dubai, Sep 12 (Ians) Several top cricketers from across the world, including former greats from Pakistan, congratulated Sri Lanka for their amazing victory in the Asia Cup final against Pakistan at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday night.
Former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram said Sri Lanka came into the final with the mind-set that they had to clinch the trophy.
A collective impressive performance by Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Wanindu Hasaranga and Pramod Madushan led Sri Lanka to the title with a clinical 23-run win. This is Sri Lanka’s sixth Asia Cup title — 1986, 1997, 2004, 2008, 2014 and 2022. After losing their opening game against Afghanistan, Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and then again Pakistan to clinch the 2022 Asia Cup.
“Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing. That was the mantra of this amazing Sri Lankan team so congratulations… better team won (the trophy) in the end,” wrote Akram.

Christchurch, Aug 24 (Ians) New Zealand on Wednesday announced a 15-member squad for the three-match Odi series against Australia starting September 6 in Cairns, with fast bowler Matt Henry making a comeback after recovering from his rib injury.
Henry’s inclusion is the only change from the squad, who claimed New Zealand’s first one-day series win in the West Indies earlier this week, with spinner Ish Sodhi making way. With Sodhi missing out on selection, Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell will play the role of spin-bowling all-rounders in the squad.
Kane Williamson, resuming the captaincy after missing the final two games against West Indies in Barbados, said the squad couldn’t wait to head across the Tasman.
“It’s a great rivalry we have with Australia; it’s always a huge occasion for the fans, and the team really look forward to it,” said Williamson.
