Hurricanes are frightening all on on their own without having to involve a predatory animal. Yet Carlos Brooks’ Burning Bright not only features a Category 3 hurricane, a ferocious tiger is thrown in for added effect. Back when this film was first announced, its plot was met with laughter and doubt; the idea was as intriguing as it was ridiculous. Over time though, this suspenseful story of a girl, a boy, and a tiger has become a shining example of how to follow through on a high concept.
Two distinct yet equally uncontrollable forces are on display at the beginning of Burning Bright. As Hurricane Isabel builds a sense of foreboding in the background, a young woman finally confronts her family situation. The collegebound Kelly is making the difficult decision of leaving behind her autistic brother Tom when life catches her off guard again. Kelly’s plans are dashed after her...

Director: Carlos Brooks.
Writers: Christine Coyle Johnson, Julie Prendiville Roux, and David Higgins.
Burning Bright was loosely created from William Blake's 18th Century poem called "The Tyger," which begins " Tyger! Tyger! burning bright/ In the forests of the night,/ What immortal hand or eye/ Could frame thy fearful symmetry?" Just as symmetrical is Briana Evigan as Kelly who tries to survive a night with a tiger on the loose. If that was enough, then a hurricane brings further terror in this exciting but repetitive popcorn flick from Lionsgate (2010).
Kelly has just lost her mother to a suspicious suicide and now she must help with her brother Tom (Charlie Tahan) who is autistic. Kelly must also deal with a greedy and manipulative stepfather who already has a series of plans for his ex-wife's inheritance. Strange how his plans go into effect right after her death with no period of grief.

Burning Bright
Stars: Briana Evigan, Garret Dillahunt, Charlie Tahan, Meat Loaf | Written by Christine Coyle Johnson and Julie Prendiville Roux | Directed by Carlos Brooks
When 20 year old Kelly (Evigan) wakes late at night during a hurricane, she finds a hungry tiger stalking her through her home. With every door and window boarded up from the outside and her stepfather nowhere to be found, Kelly fights frantically to stay one step ahead of the killer beast. Torn between protecting her autistic brother Tom and saving herself from a brutal mauling, Kelly’s situation becomes more complicated and desperate at every terrifying turn.
Burning Bright is one of those films whose concept sounds so amazing that it qualifies (in my opinion) as a must-see movie, and luckily it doesn’t disappoint. The film starts off innocently enough, with Garret Dillahunt buying a circus tiger from Meat Loaf in order to open a safari park!

Word just in from the Afm is that Carlos Brooks' Burning Bright is being sold under the new title of Ravenous . (Not to be confused with the 1999 film of the same name starring Guy Pearce, Robert Carlyle and David Arquette) The film centers on Briana Evigan ( Sorority Row , Mother's Day ) and her autistic little brother both trapped in a house during a hurricane with a tiger. Last House On The Left 's Garret Dillahunt is responsible for unleashing the beast in the house to stalk Evigan. You can read our chat with writers Julie Prendiville Roux and Christine Coyle right here , as well as our brief interview with Dillahunt about the film here . More when we hear it!

A funny thing happened shortly after I placed Burning Bright in my most-anticipated genre films of 2009 list - I was contacted by the writers, Julie Prendiville Roux and Christine Coyle. Both were eager to meet with me and chat more about the film. I agreed to interview them at a decent coffee shop in Sherman Oaks on a January afternoon to talk more about their film which appears to spit in the face of remakes presenting a concept so strange it has to be seen to be believed. Try this on for size... Briana Evigan ( Sorority Row ) stars as Kelly, a young woman who, through a series of events, is locked in a house with her autistic brother and a tiger. Oh, and this occurs during a hurricane . Like I said, wild. Quite unlike Roux and Coyle. Talkative, yes. Sassy? You bet....
