Pilots and military personnel have been reporting an increase of UFO (unidentified flying object) or Uap (unidentified aerial phenomena) sightings in recent years, and to get to the bottom of the matter members of Congress – who fear this “aerial phenomena” could pose a threat to national security and haven’t been able to get much information on them from the military or government agencies – held a public hearing on the subject earlier this week. One of the people asked to give testimony was David Grusch, who used to be a member of a U.S. Air Force panel on UAPs… and during his testimony, Grusch claimed that the government is in possession of alien tech and “nonhuman biologics” that have been gathered from UFO crash sites!
Grusch said he has gathered the information he has through interviews conducted with forty witnesses over the course of four years. He claimed he has...

Deadline reported earlier today that "Killer Elite," a new action film starring Jason Statham, Robert De Niro and Clive Owen, will be the first film released by new distributor Open Road Films on September 23, 2011. This is interesting news for a few reasons: 1) It stars Jason Statham. 2) It stars Jason Statham and Clive Owen. And 3) Open Road is a a new (sorta) independent distributor, founded by multiplex chains AMC and Regal Entertainment.
It's an interesting time for the movie theater business. As they get into the distribution business for themselves, it gets even more interesting. Just last month I interviewed filmmaker Sean Kirkpatrick whose first film, "Cost of a Soul," was being released by AMC and Relativity Media after it won a nationwide contest. It was a one time deal (and certainly a smart public relations move) but it was also, I thought, an interesting test case. Now AMC and Regal,...

Cost of a Soul offers no happy endings or a feel-good fantasy world so many Hollywood films offer these days. It provides a peek into a world that is gritty and real...and devastating.
Reel Movie News got the chance to see this great film at a special screening as part of the "The Big Break Movie Contest" through Rogue and AMC.
The filmmaker who won, Sean Kirkpatrick, captures the essence of what people will do in desperate situations. Shot like a film noir, it still has a truly modern feel and explores the life-after-war challenges people experience when returning home for the first time.
Set in Philadelphia, wounded soldiers Tommy Donahue and Dd Davis return home to the slum neighborhood where they grew up. Once home, they realize their lives in American haven't really change and they fall into the same trap they were once in, before leaving for the war.

I had the opportunity to interview writer/director Sean Kirkpatrick who recently won AMC/Relativity's Rogue Big Break Movie Contest with his debut feature Cost of a Soul. You can read my review of the film here. In the interview, I talk with Sean about his struggles with budgetary confinements, the experience of shooting in the slums of Philadelphia, and what it's like to sell a film.
Well first I want to say congratulations on winning the ‘Big Break Movie Contest’.
Oh, thank you.

It all began with Francis Ford Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now.” Although it is one of my favorites, the movie itself was not what inspired me to become a filmmaker. Rather it was the sadistic realization of the pain, struggle and hardship that must go into creating something you so strongly believe in.
I saw filmmaking as my opportunity to conquer the “impossible.” I was enraptured by the amount of determination, persistence and purpose put into the making of Coppola’s 1979 masterpiece. From that point on, my life was dedicated to conquering the impossible, and I would forge myself into a talented writer-director or die trying.
It was because of the tenacity I learned from “Apocalypse Now” that I was able to make my first feature film, a film that was also said to be “impossible.”

War may be hell, but, as laid out in “The Cost of a Soul,” written and directed by Sean Kirkpatrick, the home front isn’t so cool either. Structured as an out-of-the-frying-pan-into-the-fire Grand Guignol, it tells the tale of two men from Philadelphia linked anonymously by a common mission in Iraq who meet in an explosive, brutal series of tit-for-tat, inter-neighborhood reprisals. Studded with raw and powerful performances and direction that screams without success for order in a universe gone awry, it asks the too-little-asked question: Just what exactly are we fighting for if not for a better life at home?

Sean Kirkpatrick’s crime drama Cost Of A Soul won the “Big Break Movie Contest,” which gives first-time feature filmmakers a shot at distribution in 50 AMC Theaters. And give the judges credit: They didn’t pick some wan relationship dramedy, littered with big-name actors looking to boost their indie cred. Cost Of A Soul is a scrappy little beast, full of unfamiliar faces and tough-guy attitude, shot in stylishly desaturated color-tones. It’s a lousy movie, but it has spunk. Cost Of A Soul stars Chris Kerson and Will Blagrove as soldiers who return from Iraq to their respective ...

However, first time screenwriter/director Sean Kirkpatrick instantly grabs hold of the viewers of his full-length feature debut, ‘Cost of a Soul,’ by breaking the stereotype that dramatic interpretations of real-life issues can’t be captivating. His brave determination to show that continued violence hinders the growth of a community continuously shines through in the crime drama. ‘Cost of a Soul’ follows two wounded soldiers, Tommy Donahue...

What's the cost of a soul? That's what Dd is struggling to find out in our exclusive clip from this new Sean Kirkpatrick-directed movie.
In "Cost of a Soul," Dd and his friend Tommy Donahue leave behind the war in Iraq and come home to their slummy neighborhood in Northern Philadelphia. Once he's back home, Dd tries to prevent his younger brother James from turning to a life of crime. In our clip from the film, Dd confronts James on the streets to stop him from turning into the crime kingpin that their older brother Darnell turned into.
"Cost of a Soul" comes from first time writer/director Kirkpatrick, and has been making the rounds on the film festival circuit over the past year. The movie examines the lives of Dd and Tommy after they return home from the war overseas and have to cope with the lives of crime they left behind.

A lot of times you hear about projects like...

Independent filmmakers are always looking for their big break. Writer/director Sean Kirkpatrick found his, appropriately enough, in something called "The Big Break Contest." Launched last summer by Relativity Media and AMC Theatres, the contest was designed to give one worthy filmmaker a shot at national distribution. A panel of judges that included Relativity CEO Ryan Kavanaugh and actress Kate Bosworth picked Kirkpatrick's "Cost of a Soul," a dark story of Iraq war veterans lost in the drug trade in Kirkpatrick's hometown of Philadelphia, as their inaugural winner. Now the film's opening in 50 AMC Theatres across the country this Friday (you can find a full list of locations and showtimes here).
It's a move that could be one small step for a single indie filmmaker or, if the business model of movie theaters distributing smaller films to large audiences catches on, a giant leap for an entire industry. Kirkpatrick, a...

Cost of a Soul is directed by Sean Kirkpatrick and stars Chris Kerson, Will Blagrove, Judy Jerome, Mark Borkowski, Gregg Almquist and Maddie M. Jones. This film opens in theaters on May 20th, 2011.
Story:
Cost of a Soul is the gritty tale of two wounded veterans who return home to the ghetto they joined the military to escape. As they struggle for redemption, their own families become entangled in a web of crime, corruption and violence. The film was shot in the spirit of the 1940′s film noir, but set in the modern context of a Philadelphia ghetto neighborhood. The locations used during production were some of the most violent neighborhoods in America as Kirkpatrick’s goal was to embrace the reality of the situation within those neighborhoods.

Cost of a Soul
Directed by: Sean Kirkpatrick
Starring: Chris Kerson, Will Blagrove, Mark Borkowski
Rating: R
Release Date: May 20, 2011
Trailer Score: 5/10
Thoughts by Tsr: Unfortunately, the trailer starts off strong. The music and the brutal imagery work together to create a surprisingly visceral portrayal of the war. It’s definitely an attention grabber, which is always good for business, but sadly, it feels as if they didn’t put forth the same effort and painstaking dedication to the rest of the trailer.
As soon as Cost of a Soul turns to color, it devolves into an over saturated exercise in sensory overload. The main issue with the trailer seems to be that I have no idea what it’s selling except excitement. There’s no sincerity to what I’m seeing or hearing. Rather, it felt like they searched the movie’s running time for all instances of someone...

The 16th annual San Antonio Film Festival, which runs June 23-27, is truly a great combination of celebrating local talent and international cinema, screening films produced in Texas to ones produced in Europe, South America and the Middle East.
There’s also a distinct flavor of socially aware fictional narratives and documentaries, including films about Tibetan refugees, migrant workers, the 2008 Presidential election, alcoholism and genocide. But, that’s not to say the fest is a totally serious affair as there’s also several genre films about the World Cup, sheep rustlers, dancers, crooks and other ne’er-do-wells. It looks like a fun mix.
