Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from Episode 5 of “The Boys” Season 4, currently streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video.
While Homelander (Antony Starr) and the supes were away at Vought’s V52 fan event (not to be at all confused with Disney’s 23) on this week’s episode of “The Boys,” Butcher (Karl Urban), Frenchie (Tomer Capone) and company played with a group of crazy, vicious farm animals on a journey to find a supe-killing virus.
Amid those two wild plot points was a graver storyline: Hughie (Jack Quaid) and his recently returned mother Daphne (Rosemarie Dewitt) saying goodbye to Hugh Sr. (Simon Pegg), when Hughie agrees to give his dad a pain-free death to put him out of his new misery. During the episode, Hugh Sr. struggled to control the destructive phasing super power he’d acquired after Daphne gave him Compound V in order to bring him out of a coma.

Families are complicated, more so in the messed-up world of superbeings in The Boys universe, and time and again we have been reminded of that through the series’ bloody shenanigans. The fifth episode of the ongoing season brings family dynamics to the forefront to assess both humans and supes from their respective positions—and helps viewers find a commonality in that. Previously, Homelander went back to his childhood ‘home’—the ‘secretive Vought lab where he was created, brainwashed, tortured, and perfected—and decided to exact bloody retribution for all the past crimes. Hughie’s father, who was on the verge of his death, was dosed with Compound V by Daphne, resulting in his revival from a comatose condition. On the other hand, after Firecracker belittled Starlight on a propagandist teleshow of her own by bringing up her abortion, Annie lost her cool and beat Firecracker to a pulp, resulting in...

Family Portrait.“You can’t always trust photographs,” may just be one line out of many in Lucy Kerr’s decisively polyphonous Family Portrait (2023). It is also a meta-statement encapsulating the film’s source of narrative tensions—that glaze of artificiality over every family portrait ever taken. Kerr’s debut feature stars Deragh Campbell as the protagonist, Katy. She and her boyfriend, Olek (Chris Galust), are the youngest couple in Katy’s big family—not to mention unmarried and childless—which makes them undeclared outsiders. There is no dramatic reason for them to be so eager to leave the holiday home, and yet they should get going. It’s late morning. The breakfast is lavish, with just the right amount of chaotic buzz. Olek is tasked with taking a family portrait, which will become this year’s Christmas card, but something feels off. Tensions mount as whispers of a recently...

Lucy Kerr’s unnerving debut, “Family Portrait,” opens with a sequence where a character is intent on materializing the title in literal fashion. Katy (Deragh Campbell), a 20-something, tries to wrangle adults and children to take a group photo together on a calid afternoon among the greenery in the family’s vast estate. As her relatives walk towards the chosen spot, the camera moves horizontally while bodies come in and out of the frame. Katy, wearing a frustrated expression, struggles to get them to cooperate. Their scattered movement and Katy’s exasperation give the scene a dreamlike uncanniness.
Could these images be Katy’s unconscious preemptively anxious about the task ahead? For the subsequent scenes, Kerr fragments the large group into smaller cohorts settled throughout the property, each having exchanges ranging from the perils of office life to long-established anecdotes. But while free-floating and airy in its construction, the film’s deceiving familiarity slowly erodes,...

For the third season of FX’s The Bear, don’t be surprised if you see a Stella Artois on one of the restaurant tables (or in a chef’s hands), or perhaps a reference to American Express or its reservation app Resy, which has become a staple of the high-end dining scene.
They are brands that fit in naturally to a show that touches on food, restaurants and family. And they happen to be sponsors of the new season of the FX series, which was created by Chris Storer and stars Jeremy Allen White.
The Bear has become a bona fide hit for FX, and Disney says that advertisers are responding accordingly. The company says that over 25 sponsors have signed on, including brands in the food categories like Uber Eats, Whole Foods, Talenti and Hellmann’s, but also brands like State Farm, Dell and Chime.

Michaels was the voice of ‘Sunday Night Football’ on NBC for years, and will now lend that voice to its Olympics coverage…kind of.
Peacock is going all-out to ensure its coverage of the Games of the Xxxiii Olympiad this summer draws the attention of audiences. The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris open on Friday, July 26, and Peacock has already announced an unprecedented level of coverage for the games. But NBC is taking things a step further, and announced today that it would be presenting “Your Daily Olympic Recap on Peacock” each day of the games, and that voiceovers for the recaps would be provided by none other than legendary sportscaster Al Michaels…or at least, an artificial intelligence (AI)-generated version of him.
Key Details: The daily recaps will become available on Peacock starting July 27. Fans can curate the types of highlights they want to see in the recap each day.

When Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell heard about plans for country greats like Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, George Strait, Chris Stapleton, and Dierks Bentley to honor the band’s music on the covers collection Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty, he felt it made perfect sense, even though they were a rock band at their core.
“We all grew up in the South and were seeped in the music of Hank Williams and George Jones that we heard on the radio,” he tells Rs.
