The cost of fame sits in the living room wondering aloud whether dad will be home for Christmas. Why these two young boys’ voices have been deepened to sound like they’re 40-year-old drunks slurring through a bender is beyond me (an assumption of it being a dream or game is squashed once mom enters without the effect being called out), but their words have meaning. Troyal’s (Mickey Reece channeling Garth Brooks) star has risen to unimaginable heights and he’s embraced it to the point where his “good ol’ boy” demeanor can’t quite hide the growing ego beneath a cowboy hat. While Jamie (Leah N.H. Philpott) tries toeing the line of admiring his accomplishments and being frightened about what they mean for the family, he’s already miles away.
And he’s about to literally be miles away, thanks to a letter from Troyal’s idol George Jones...

"Are you afraid of the bark?" What a tagline! Ha. The premise of this wonders if "there could be a really interesting story if dogs could sense the spirits of deceased pets." Scary. Ghost Dogs is an award-winning animated short film made by filmmaker Joe Cappa - it's now online to watch. A family's new rescue pup is terrorized by deceased pets in this mind-bending horror short. "An homage to those rare moments of self-discovery when you are eleven years old, flipping through channels, and you stumble upon The Shining by accident. The kind of content you weren't supposed to watch but did anyway." Also: "we hope Ghost Dogs evokes a sense of wonder for all those who watch it... Taking them to that place when they were exploring genres of film without knowing exactly what they were getting into." Oh definitely. There's so much weird, wacky, creepy stuff happening in this – love it.

Huh. Who knew the Nightstream audience were such softies for heavy metal monster bands? Nightstream wrapped up a couple days ago so all that was left was to tally the votes and announce the audience awards! The documentary This is Gwar took top honors this year, winning the audience award in the feature film category. Another documentary, Kier-La Janisse’s doc, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror got a runner-up nod, along with Japanese sci-fi comedy Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes. In regards to the shorts, two films shared top honors this year, Ghost Dogs, from Joe Cappa and Guts from Chris McInroy. Congrats to all the winners and congrats to the National Alliance To End Homelessness and climate change advocacy...

Yoo Ah-in (Voice Of Silence), Zelda Adams (Hellbender) win acting prizes.
EuiJeong Hong’s South Korean thriller Voice Of Silence has won the 25th anniversary edition Fantasia International Film Festival’s Cheval Noir award for best film.
Hong’s film follows a mute low-level gangster tasked with taking charge of an 11-year-old kidnapped girl from a wealthy family. The jury described Voice Of Silence as “impossible to pin down, and truly idiosyncratic. Put simply, it’s unlike anything we’d seen before”.

Bj’s Mobile Gift Shop (Jason Park)
Heartwarming, clever, and well-paced, filmmaker Jason Park builds a fully-realized, hyper-real Chicago in which Bj (Johnnyboy Tellem) is a hustler on the streets with a traveling bag of problem-solving gifts for his many clients around town. He’s strategic in his timing, catching any and every manner of city-dweller at the moment they need a quick snack, a phone charger, a new shirt-and-tie, or something of the sort. Bookended by a precarious skyscraper interview for a “real’ job, Park captures the spirit of his lead nicely. The entire narrative is lifted by a pitch-perfect...
