Universal Music Classics/Decca Gold announced today, the release of the score to the highly anticipated biopic from IFC Films, Mary Shelley, which features original music by composer Amelia Warner (Mum’s List). Mary Shelley will be released digitally on May 25th – the same date the film premieres in theaters in the Us.
In describing the composition process, Amelia emphasized the ghostly themes of the film by utilizing vocalists and orchestral rhythms to assist in telling this illuminating tale.
“We used a lot of synths layered with the orchestra. The real strings layered with electric synths created a strangeness and modernity that I think works well with Mary’s character. We found some amazing musicians and two incredible singers who are a huge part of the score. We used a soprano and a counter tenor and had them sing in a very expressive way. For example, when things start to...

Guy Garvey, Isaac Julien, Martha Wainwright and other artists give their top tips for unleashing your inner genius
Guy Garvey, musician
• For fear of making us sound like the Waltons, my band [Elbow] are a huge source of inspiration for me. They're my peers, my family; when they come up with something impressive, it inspires me to come up with something equally impressive.
• Spending time in your own head is important. When I was a boy, I had to go to church every Sunday; the priest had an incomprehensible Irish accent, so I'd tune out for the whole hour, just spending time in my own thoughts. I still do that now; I'm often scribbling down fragments that later act like trigger-points for lyrics.
• A blank canvas can be very intimidating, so set yourself limitations. Mine are often set for me by the music the band has come up with. With The Birds,...

There are a few things you need to get right if you're going to make a movie set in the '80s: the fashion, the lingo and, without question, the music.
Every classic "Hey, weren't the '80s wacky?" film has leaned heavily on its soundtrack, and the folks behind the upcoming indie flick and Toronto Film Festival favorite "Dirty Girl" have apparently been taking notes. The soundtrack to the movie is stocked with pop cheese that will set off pastel-hued flashbacks in nostalgia buffs and entertain anyone who's into the whole yacht-rock revival that seems to be going on these days.
The first thing you'll notice about the "Dirty Girl" soundtrack, however, is how heavy it leans on a relatively obscure pop singer named Melissa Manchester. A favorite of one of the movie's central characters, Manchester lands five of the album's 14 tracks, including her best-known song, the 1982 No. 5 hit...

Folk legend Paul Simon battled a throat infection to delight the crowds at the Glastonbury festival today. The 69-year-old - who rose to fame with musical partner Art Garfunkel in the '60s - revealed the ailment after opening his set on the Pyramid Stage with an acoustic performance of 'The Boy In The Bubble'. "I'm fighting a throat infection," he told the gathered masses, sharing with them his fear of failing to hit the high notes in some songs. However, the show went without a hitch as Simon relived classics such as '50 Ways To Leave Your Lover' and 'Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes', the latter of which was sung acapella with the audience happily joining in throughout. His set over, Simon left the stage with a bow, a wave and a thanks, as the crowd - which included Guillemots founder Fyfe Dangerfield - stood cheering (more...

Guillemots have revealed that their third studio album has a "darker" sound. The album, titled Walk The River, was released on April 18 and has been widely commended for its similarity to the group's Mercury Prize-winning debut Through The Windowpane. "This is definitely a darker record, but as it goes on it gets more uplifting," frontman Fyfe Dangerfield told the Daily Star. "We kept imagining someone waking up in outer space having lost everything and wanting to get back home. "A lot of the album is about letting the past go. Really it's quite an optimistic record, just heavier - it's the most intense record we've done." Since the release of their second album Red in 2008, (more)...
