Like its name suggests, Gold Rush is centered around small mining companies mining for that precious metal. Its initial name was Gold Rush: Alaska because the people featured on the series were prospecting in Porcupine Creek in the state of Alaska, but since said individuals have since searched in a much wider range of places, the name was changed to just Gold Rush for the second season. Regardless, since the series is on its eighth season, it is natural for people to wonder about how the whole thing got started under the oversight of its initial executive producer Christo Doyle,

Take a group of interesting people, add a large dollop of ambition, a cup of adventure, a sprinkling of sweeping vistas, and garnish the whole thing with a can-do attitude. That’s the winning recipe for Gold Rush – the Discovery Channel’s number one rated series. This unscripted docu-drama has dominated Friday night television for five years, and was even joined by its own lead-in show, The Dirt, after ratings continued to soar. Now Gold Rush is headed for its season five finale – which is expected to be the biggest night yet for the production.
Gold Rush follows the mixed fortunes of a handful of men, who saw an opportunity to change their lives, and seized it – heading north to hunt for gold. We’ve seen anger, frustration, excitement and elation, but throughout, Gold Rush has maintained something that is all too rare in television programming today – an uplifting story.

Even ABC’s Shark Tank is no match for the Discovery Channel’s Gold Rush this season, as ratings show the reality series ranked number one in all of television among men aged 25 – 54, and once again claimed the title of number one cable program on Friday evening. Having seen high ratings for its season premiere, the show has maintained that level of viewership as it follows a variety of crews through a range of difficulties in their quest to hit Klondike paydirt.
With its own lead-in show, The Dirt, offering fans “the inside scoop on all things Gold Rush” – courtesy of host Christo Doyle – the show returns Friday November 14th with another episode packed with drama:
“Dave agrees to work with the Hoffman crew under a new agreement. Tony has a near miss while removing the heaviest part of the dredge and Parker fights with Rick when he opens up untested ground.

It’s been the top rated show on the Discovery Channel for 69 episodes – drawing such a consistently vast audience that a pre-show program titled The Dirt was introduced for its fourth season – and now, Gold Rush is heading back to our screens with more crews, more gold, more drama and, presumably, even more viewers.

During the Television Critics Association winter press tour earlier this month, Discovery Channel threw a party on the hotel's back lawn, themed to its scripted gold-mining miniseries "Klondike," which premieres Monday (Jan. 20).
On hand to tape a special "Klondike"-centric episode of "Gold Rush: The Dirt" was "Gold Rush" executive producer Christo Doyle and teenage miner Parker Schnabel. In front of a temporary Alaskan saloon was a local horseman and his equine pal, Magi. Doyle hopped up to shoot an intro for "The Dirt," but Schnabel satisfied himself with just saying hello.
Before the horseplay, they sat down with Zap2it to discuss the meeting between "Game of Thrones" and "Klondike" star Richard Madden and Schnabel.

Gold mining is a lot about luck, and viewers will have to judge for themselves if they've struck paydirt with "Santa Todd," the Friday, Dec. 13, episode of "The Dirt," the pre-show to Discovery's hit "Gold Rush."
As always, trying to ride herd on unruly miners and camera guys in "The Dirt" is executive producer-turned-talk-show host Christo Doyle, who got a call one day from the group president of Discovery and TLC Networks.
Says Doyle, "It just came from Eileen O'Neill asking me -- and I wasn't sure if she was serious or not -- for 'A Very Christo Christmas.' So we threw together what ended up being one of the more fun shows we've ever done. There's no question. There's lots of ridiculousness that goes on. When he was 12 years old, Alaskan Parker Schnabel, now 19, of Discovery's Friday hit "Gold Rush" saved a life.
According to JuneauEmpire.com, back in the winter of 2006, Schnabel was flying with his beloved grandfather, miner John Schnabel, when he spied Jay Blair, a snowboarder who had gotten lost and spent a night outdoors in frigid conditions. Too exhausted to even wave for help, Blair struck rescue gold when Schnabel spotted him from the air and alerted the pilot.
So even as a pre-teen, Schnabel had a combination of luck and the ability to see what others might miss.
Now on his own, away from his grandpa's advice -- and having invested his college fund to mine this summer in the Klondike with mentor Tony Beets -- Schnabel is having to call upon his skills and acquire more to dig success out of the earth in the far North.

The quest for Southern Hemisphere riches ends -- at least for now -- on Friday, Aug. 30, with the finale of the summer series "Gold Rush: South America."
The spinoff of Discovery Channel's hit reality series "Gold Rush" premiered on Aug. 2 and continued its predecessor's habit of finding viewers, becoming the day's No. 1 cable show among adults ages 25-54 and men ages 25-54 and No. 2 in all of television among men 24-54 and men 18-49.
The regular "Gold Rush" series has its fourth season premiere in October.
In a TV universe where it's often difficult to get men to give up their video games and sports to actually sit down and watch reality or scripted television, "Gold Rush" has succeeded by following a motley bunch of gold miners seeking to make a fortune by finding the precious metal.
It also helps that the men do it by driving around huge earth-moving equipment.

Tonight (Friday, Feb. 22), Discovery's hit reality series "Gold Rush" ends its third season with a live, two-hour finale coming from a set built in a warehouse in Portland, Ore.
Series executive producer Christo Doyle took some time out from planning for the big finish to answer some questions about the men populating the gold-mining show -- especially Todd Hoffman, leader of the show's first mining crew -- and his relationship with them.
On why there's a live finale:
Doyle: "I opened my dumb mouth at the beginning of the season. I pitched that we do 'Gold Rush' live to kick off the season. But it would have been October in the Klondike, and it's roughly negative 20 degrees there. It just didn't make all that much sense. So I said, 'You know what, we'll just do it at the end of the season.' And they held me to it.

Tonight (Friday, Oct. 26), Discovery Channel premieres the third season of its hit reality show "Gold Rush," again following men trying to strike it big as gold miners way up north in Alaska and Canada.
After a day-long marathon of previous seasons, the fun starts at 7:30 p.m. (Et) with a 90-minute special called "Do or Die." Executive producer Christo Doyle, who has been the host of the show's online after-show, talks to the miners about what happened on the homefront in the off-season and what viewers can expect from the new episodes. At 9 p.m. Et, those episodes kick off with "Million Dollar Season."
The original mining crew whose story launched the series -- a group of hard-luck fortune-seekers led by Oregon native Todd Hoffman and his father, Jack -- is back in Canada's Klondike region, chasing a thus-far elusive motherlode.
But, when Todd Hoffman isn't battling budgets, the elements or the earth itself,...

· Re-rev your engines: Tlc has announced an extension of its successful American Chopper reality series, which ran six months until its stars, father-son motorcycle designers, Paul Teutul Sr. and Paul Teutul Jr., parted ways in a nasty legal dispute. The new project, American Chopper: Senior vs. Junior will pit the estranged Paul Sr. and Paul Jr. in competing bike shops and will premiere in August. Series executive producer Christo Doyle is not sure how he will divide each episode but revealed to the New York Post that the Teutuls' estrangement has been difficult for him too: "This is a very bitter situation that runs really deep -- at times I feel I'm a family therapist and not a producer." Discovery Communications is teaming with Steven Spielberg for a project that takes an in-depth look at the World Trade Center rebuild.
The filmmaker will present "Rebuilding Ground Zero," a documentary about the rebuilding of the Twin Towers site in New York.
"The rebuilding effort at Ground Zero is a compelling story of remembrance and renewal," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a statement. "The fact that Steven Spielberg -- one of the great filmmakers of our time -- will produce a documentary on it ensures that the story will be brought to life for people around the world for generations to come."
Rebuilding efforts on a new skyscraper on the World Trade Center site were stalled, then got under way in 2006.
The six-part series will debut on Discovery's Science Channel in 2011 -- two years before the "Freedom Tower" is expected to be completed -- and will be shot in 3D and high-def.
