Banijay France has entered a joint venture with seasoned French industry player Malika Abdellaoui to launch Marathon Studio, as part of its strategy to ramp up its output in the scripted landscape.
Abdellaoui was previously managing director of Newen Distribution, the production and distribution company owned by French’s biggest TV network TF1 Group. Prior to joining Newen, Abdellaoui was deputy director of TV sales at EuropaCorp, as well as senior acquisition manager at the Disney Channel for France and Emea. Abdellaoui will be the majority shareholder of Marathon Studio. Banijay France’s CEO François de Brugada pointed out that Marathon is a renowned brand name in France and “is one that Banijay has owned for some time.” Marathon was a subsidiary of Zodiak Media, which was bought by Banijay in 2016.

Newen Distribution, the distribution arm of TF1-backed Newen has struck a deal with the BBC for rights to Danish crime series DNA (8×45’), starring Charlotte Rampling.
The series comes from Torleif Hoppe, co-creator of The Killing and is produced by Nordisk Film Production in collaboration with France’s Frenchkiss Pictures, and co-produced by TV 2 Denmark and Arte France. The series will air this year on the BBC.
Cast includes Oscar-nominated Charlotte Rampling (45 Years), Polish rising star Zofia Wichlacz (Netflix thriller 1983), Danish actors Anders W. Berthelsen (The Killing) and Nicolas Bro (The Killing), and Olivia Joof (Perfect Places).

London-based VFX powerhouse Framestore has appointed Akhauri P. Sinha as the head of its new Mumbai studio. A 20-year industry vet, Akhauri joins from Method, where he was Managing Director of the studio’s Indian operations. His credits include Indian VFX work on Jumanji: The Next Level and Ford vs Ferrari. He will report directly to Framestore’s Global Managing Director, Film, Fiona Walkinshaw, and will be responsible for setting up Framestore’s newest office, a facility based in the heart of Mumbai’s vibrant tech district. Rodolphe Buet has joined Newen, the TF1 Group-owned production and distribution company, as head of distribution. Buet is joining Newen from On Entertainment (“Playmobil”) where he worked as head of the film division for two years. The executive previously held a 12-year tenure at Studiocanal as president of international distribution and marketing for films, library and TV series.

The Late Late Show with James Corden producer Fulwell 73 is to remake Dutch entertainment format Pants on Fire in the U.S. and UK after acquiring the rights from Newen Distribution.
The production company, which is run by Ben Winston, Leo Pearlman, Gabe Turner, Ben Turner and Corden, is to develop and pitch adaptations of the show for English-language broadcasters.
The format sees two teams compete to try and convince a celebrity jury that they are telling the truth with a series of unbelievable stories.
It was originally produced by Tuvalu Media and Newen Group’s Cccp for Dutch public broadcaster Npo and ran as a weekly 40-minute show in September 2017 before being recommissioned for a second season. It is sold internationally by Newen Distribution, the sales arm of the TF1-backed business.
