The London Olympics will be available to free to air viewers in HD, Nine has revealed.
The announcement came as part of Nine’s launch event for its first coverage of the Games since winning the rights from Seven. The Olympics begin in late July and run into August.
In common with rivals Seven and Ten, Nine’s main channel is in standard definition only. But for the duration of the games, it will be simulcasting with Gem which is in high definition.
Meanwhile, partly because of the time difference with the UK, Nine’s Olympics will be on virtually around the clock.
This includes competition coverage from 6.30pm through the night to 9am. This will then be followed by a two hours highlights compilation which will also air again in the afternoon.
Although the Today show will not air during the Olympics, presenters Karl Stefanovic, Lisa Wilkinson and Cameron Williams...

The hosts for coverage of the London 2012 Olympics on Australian television have been announced. Karl Stefanovic, Leila McKinnon, Eddie McGuire, Mark Nicholas, Ken Sutcliffe and Cameron Williams will front the Nine Network's Olympic Games coverage later this year. The network's managing director Jeff Browne, who has been accused of sexism for only hiring one woman compared to five male presenters, denied that the channel is too male-orientated.
