This year’s crop of Conecta Fiction short form series presentations offer up young, mostly female ensemble casts and a healthy dash of dark humor.
The five finalists – which include three Spanish entries, one Portuguese script and another from Argentina – will pitch their half-hour episode projects on site at Pamplona’s Baluarte Palace of Congress on Sept. 2 and Sept. 3.
Portuguese offering “#NoFilter” comes from Nuno Bernardo’s BeActive Entertainment production company, famed for its pioneering Ya multi-platform fiction (“Sofia’s Diary”). The comedy/mockumentary created and directed by Joana Alves, follows the lives of two female millennials with a tendency to view life through rose-tinted Instagram filters – until they move to Lisbon to pursue media careers and the realities of flat shares, self employment and internships bite. The series, which already comes with a pilot, is framed around a nightly podcast, with a real-life podcast planned to run with the series.

Interactive documentary The Flickering Flame, exploring Ken Loach’s 50-year career, has won the Arte International Prize at the Pixel Market.
The website, app and film is being overseen by Ken Loach’s long-time producer Rebecca O’Brien at Sixteen Films in collaboration with Paris-based digital production house Upian.

The fifth edition of Producers Lab Toronto is set to launch during the Toronto International Film Festival® from September 3 to 6, 2014. Ten producers each from Europe and Canada and four participants coming from Australia and New Zealand will meet at Tiff to exchange ideas and information on funding and co-production on both sides of the Atlantic and Down Under. Each year, this successful networking platform facilitates the development of several trans-Atlantic co-productions. Sixty-six of the 96 previous participants are working on 82 projects at different stages of production, with some of the films having since been completed.
The international networking event is organized by European Film Promotion (Efp) in collaboration with the Ontario Media Development Corporation (Omdc) and the Toronto International Film Festival®. For the second time, Screen Australia and the New Zealand Film Commission (Nzfc) will be supporting the event. Additional financial backing comes from Eurimages and Telefilm Canada and the associated Efp member organizations.
On the look-out for projects with a wider scope regarding financing, creativity and distribution, the 24 participants will be taking part in pitching sessions, case studies, roundtables and various networking events with key people from the film industry and film funds.
The participants of the Producers Lab Toronto 2014 program have prior co-production experience and high-quality projects in the pipeline which could be interesting for the international market. The Europeans are selected by the Efp network from the alumni of their prestigious Cannes-based networking platform Producers On The Move. Canadian producers are selected by Omdc and Tiff from an open call across Canada, while Screen Australia and New Zealand Film Commission each selected two participants from their countries.

The feature-length film, that focuses on the stories of the people who have been affected or have partaken in the Arab Spring. The programas been financially supported by the Media Program (2007-2013) of the European Union and the participating Efp member organizations who each made a careful selection of their national participants according to specific criteria.
The schedule of Producers on the Move includes working sessions, one-to-one speed-dating meetings and various opportunities to exchange knowledge and follow up discussions on future projects. In addition, Efp will be teaming up with the European cultural channel Arte and the pan-European co-production fund Eurimages for Producers on the Move. For the first time, Eurimages has prepared a case study exclusively for Efp's program to be discussed under the direction of Eurimages Executive Director Roberto Olla.
He points out the importance of programs such as Producers on the Move:
“This is the 4th consecutive year that Eurimages is involved with this initiative which perfectly marries our objectives of encouraging co-operation between producers so as to stimulate cinematographic co-productions and of promoting their international distribution. Further to the success of the collaboration at the Cannes Festival, the Eurimages Fund has strengthened its partnership with European Film Promotion through other initiatives which also seek to unite professionals from the European film industry in order to participate in its development on an international level.”
Looking back at previous editions, Efp's programme results each year in several new trans-national co-productions and gives the producers a higher profile in Cannes. For 2013, almost all of the participants are still in contact with one another and 17 co-productions are in development.
One recent success story is the coming-of-age feature The Word, directed by Anna Kazejak and co-produced by two Producers on the Move from 2011, Lukasz Dzieciol(Opus Film, Poland) and Jesper Morthorst (Sf Film Production, Denmark). The film was released in Poland in March after its premiere at the Berlinale in the Generation sidebar.
Currently in post is Dirk Ohm - The Illusionist That Disappeared, directed by Bobbie Peers. The producer Maria Ekerhovd (Mer Film As, Norway), joined forces for this film with her Producers on the Move colleague from 2011, Gian-Piero Ringel (Neue Road Movies, Germany) and the 2010 Producers on the Move, Lizette Jonjic (Migma Film, Sweden). Norway has scheduled the release for September 2014. Ekerhovd and Ringel also worked together for two further projects: Every Thing Will Be Fine by Wim Wenders and the six episodes for Cathedrals of Culture which have been presented at this year’s Berlinale.

European Film Promotion (Efp) has selected 24 emerging young European producers for the 15th edition of its Producers on the Move networking initiative, which will be held during the upcoming Cannes Film Festival from May 17-19.
The 2014 selection includes the The Bureau Film Company’s Tristan Goligher, who is currently in production on Andrew Haigh’s new feature 45 Years, starring Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay and sold internationally by The Match Factory.
Also on the list is Hamberg-based Henning Kamm, who had two co-productions at this year’s Berlinale – Karim Ainouz’s Praia do Futuro and Kutlug Ataman’s The Lamb - and is now working on new films by Mohammad Rasoulof, Stéphane Robelin and Lili Horvath.

Power to the Pixel announces new German partner for The Pixel Lab 2014.
European funding body Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg (Mfg) is set to partner with Power to the Pixel on The Pixel Lab 2014, the annual development workshop for projects across film, TV, games, online, advertising, publishing and mobile platforms.
The Pixel Lab begins with a six-day workshop in Baden-Württemberg, supporting media professionals in developing and honing skills needed to create, produce and distribute cross-media projects.
Project-driven mentoring is provided by Michel Reilhac, head of studies at Venice Biennale College; Nuno Bernardo, CEO, beActive; Diana Elbaum, producer, Entre Chien et Loup; Thomas Howalt, games producer and writer; Adam Sigel, content strategist, writer and producer; and Inga von Staden, media architect.

A total of 16 cross-media projects from across Europe have been chosen to take part in the annual Pixel Lab, taking place in Wallonia in Belgium at the end of the month.
Now in its fourth year, it offers media professionals a six-day workshop on how to create, produce and distribute cross-media stories that can engage audiences as well as monetise.
Participants include 16 international producers showcasing projects that incorporate film, gaming, mobile, publishing, live events, interactive, TV and online as well as 15 media professionals from across the industry.

Eight projects and in the running for the prestigious Arte Pixel Pitch Prize and new prizes have been introduced as cross-media content creation and distribution grow.
Power to the Pixel(PttP) has named the 30 cross-media projects which have been selected to participate in The Pixel Market 2012, its two-day co-production market to be held in London on 17 and 18 October, during the annual Cross-Media Forum held in association with the 56th BFI London Film Festival.

Of the 30 teams, eight have been selected to compete for the prestigious Arte Pixel Pitch Prize, an award of £6,000 generously sponsored by the French/German broadcaster. The eight projects in the running for this prize will be presented at The Pixel Pitch, to be judged by a panel of international commissioning executives, decision-makers and financiers who face the hard task of choosing an ultimate winner. For participants and the audience of PttP delegates who will also be in attendance, The Pixel Pitch offers a unique opportunity to hear how cross-media projects are financed, and by whom.
Liz Rosenthal, CEO & Founder of Power to the Pixel said: “Making the selection of 30 projects for this year’s market was a hard task for all the right reasons. Creators are increasingly working on the development of their story ideas and content, and as a result this year’s Pixel Market and the whole arena is growing fast. As a result, this year's Pixel Market is bigger and bolder, with new prizes introduced to help support projects and their creators. The eight projects in competition at The Pixel Pitch include The Super 8 Complex, a user-generated interactive archive celebrating 8mm film, by award-winning production company Spring Films, the U.K. production partner of Werner Herzog Films. Jeff Norton, a finalist at last year’s Pixel Pitch, returns with his immersive dystopia Metawars. The Austrian-Iranian filmmaker Arash Riahi also makes a return: his project, Everyday Rebellion, was developed through PttP’s European cross-media workshop The Pixel Lab in 2010.
In addition, all 30 producer-led teams at the Market stand a chance of winning one of three new prizes, backed by international sponsors: the beActive Pixel Market Comedy Prize, the Mozilla Pixel Market Prize for Non-Fiction, and the Cinekid Pixel Market Prize, for projects aimed at children aged between 4 and 14.
The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London on 18 October.
The Pixel Market is a unique event, dedicated to financing international cross-media properties. It puts the best cross-media projects from around the world on show in front of more than 100 leading international financiers, commissioners and decision-makers from film, broadcast, games, publishing, advertising, the arts, mobile, tech and interactive media, offering producers one-to-one meetings with these experts that could be decisive in taking their projects forward. It lies at the heart of PttP’s Cross-Media Forum, now in its sixth year, which covers the latest trends in audience behaviour and new business models in the cross-media and transmedia space.

Power to the Pixel(PttP) has named the 30 cross-media projects which have been selected to participate in The Pixel Market 2012, its two-day co-production market to be held in London on 17 and 18 October, during the annual Cross-Media Forum held in association with the 56th BFI London Film Festival.

Of the 30 teams, eight have been selected to compete for the prestigious Arte Pixel Pitch Prize, an award of £6,000 generously sponsored by the French/German broadcaster. The eight projects in the running for this prize will be presented at The Pixel Pitch, to be judged by a panel of international commissioning executives, decision-makers and financiers who face the hard task of choosing an ultimate winner. For participants and the audience of PttP delegates who will also be in attendance, The Pixel Pitch offers a unique opportunity to hear how cross-media projects are financed, and by whom.
Liz Rosenthal, CEO & Founder of Power to the Pixel said: “Making the selection of 30 projects for this year’s market was a hard task for all the right reasons. Creators are increasingly working on the development of their story ideas and content, and as a result this year’s Pixel Market and the whole arena is growing fast. We have selected 30 projects from nearly 100 entrants, well up from 25 last year which is hugely exciting for potential international partners and investors. As a result, this year's Pixel Market is bigger and bolder, with new prizes introduced to help support projects and their creators. We’re delighted to be expanding the opportunities that The Cross-Media Forum brings to the BFI London Film Festival and to the UK creative sector as a whole.”
The eight projects in competition at The Pixel Pitch include The Super 8 Complex, a user-generated interactive archive celebrating 8mm film, by award-winning production company Spring Films, the U.K. production partner of Werner Herzog Films. Jeff Norton, a finalist at last year’s Pixel Pitch, returns with his immersive dystopia Metawars. The Austrian-Iranian filmmaker Arash Riahi also makes a return: his project, Everyday Rebellion, was developed through PttP’s European cross-media workshop The Pixel Lab in 2010.
In addition, all 30 producer-led teams at the Market stand a chance of winning one of three new prizes, backed by international sponsors: the beActive Pixel Market Comedy Prize, the Mozilla Pixel Market Prize for Non-Fiction, and the Cinekid Pixel Market Prize, for projects aimed at children aged between 4 and 14.
The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London on 18 October.
The Pixel Market is a unique event, dedicated to financing international cross-media properties. It puts the best cross-media projects from around the world on show in front of more than 100 leading international financiers, commissioners and decision-makers from film, broadcast, games, publishing, advertising, the arts, mobile, tech and interactive media, offering producers one-to-one meetings with these experts that could be decisive in taking their projects forward. It lies at the heart of PttP’s Cross-Media Forum, now in its sixth year, which covers the latest trends in audience behaviour and new business models in the cross-media and transmedia space.

Dublin-based beActive has launched the world's first ever scripted series on Pinterest with its transmedia project 'Beat Girl'. Catriona Scott adapted Kallaly's novel for the web series, which was directed by Mirko Pincelli. Nuno Bernardo and Triona Campbell produced, while Enrico Tessarin was the line producer. Dania Lucas edited in post-production. BeActive has also developed the series into a feature film. Mairtin De Barra directed, working from a script written by Nuno Bernardo, Susana Tavares and Melanie Martinez. Bernardo and Campbell produced, with Ciara Whelan and De Barra the line producers on both productions. Anna Maria O'Flanagan will edit in post-production. English actress Louise Dylan (Emma) plays Heather in both the web and TV series.

FÁS Screen Training Ireland will welcome producers Nuno Bernardo (Aisling's Diary), Triona Campbell (Beat Generation Ireland) and Ben Grass (When Evil Calls) to host a course later this month entitled 'The Producer's Guide to Transmedia'. The Course will take place on November 25th and 26th. The two day course is open to producers with an interest in Transmedia and will look at how this new approach can bring extra revenues and empower producers to connect directly to audiences without the need for 'gatekeepers'.

Cr Entertainment's producers Nuno Bernardo & Triona Campbell were in Cannes last night, (Wednesday, October 7th) to pick up the prize of the C21 Best International Multi-platform Format Award for their thriller 'Final Punishment'. The competition was held during Mipcom 2010. This is the 2nd award win for this thriller series, which was previously also nominated for an Emmy and for a Rose D'Or.

RTÉ television series, 'Aisling's Diary' has been nominated in Tween/Teens for Best One-Off, Special or TV Movie Category of the international awards at KidScreen, one of the world's leading children's television summits. The event will be held in New York in February 2010. 'Aisling's Diary', Ireland's first cross media teen series is the only Irish program to be nominated. Produced by Cr Entertainment Ltd, 'Aisling's Diary' follows the life of an Irish American teenager as she returns with her family to live in Ireland and attempts to fit in. The series, now in its second season, was created by Nuno Bernardo (Sofia's Diary UK) who will also be speaking at the KidScreen Summit on the Bypassing TV panel.
