Dave is taking a break.
There are “no current plans” for a fourth season of the Fxx comedy as co-creator and star Dave Burd “presses pause” to focus on other things.
Burd, otherwise known as Lil Dicky, has long talked about his music career and wanting to record more albums. Penith, the soundtrack to Dave, featuring the single “Mr. McAdams,” was released last month.
“Making Dave has been and continues to be a dream come true,” he said. “But there are other creative ventures that I am dying to pursue as well. For the past 5 years, I’ve poured every fiber of my being into the show, and after three amazing seasons, this feels like a good time to press pause to give myself the bandwidth to do some of the other things I have always wanted to do. “Dave” has been renewed for Season 3 at FX.
The show, based on the rise of hip-hop star Lil Dicky, stars Dave Burd as himself, as well as GaTa, Andrew Santino, Taylor Misiak, Travis Bennett and Christine Ko.
The show’s second season debuted last summer on Fxx, focusing on the aftermath of Dave’s relationship with Ally (Misiak) and conflicts with his hype man and creative partner GaTa, whose real-life struggle with bipolar disorder is portrayed on screen.
Season 2 ended on a high note, with GaTa joining Lil Dicky on stage at the VMAs for a euphoric duet of the song “We Good.”
Burd told Variety that he cast GaTa as himself in part because their relationship is “borderline impossible to replicate,” and he was “extremely confident” GaTa would be able to nail the humor of the series.

It didn’t take long for “Dave” to become Fxx’s most-watched show in history, and the wait for the comedy series’ sophomore season is nearly over. Fxx released the trailer for “Dave” Season 2. When we last saw Dave — Aka Lil Dicky — at the end of Fxx’s “Dave” Season 1, he finally got a record deal and looked to be on the verge of real success – despite his own self-sabotaging tendencies. But it looks like self-sabotage might still be getting in the way of that success in the second season, as he’s is spending way too much time doing everything but recording is debut album. Including uh, spending too much time alone, if you catch our drift.
That all plays out in the trailer for “Dave” Season 2, which sees everyone in Dave’s life increasingly frustrated at his lack of followthrough. Watch the trailer above — and by the way, “Dave” Season 2 premieres June 14.
“I have a lot of other things going on, socially, professionally, borderline sexually,” Dave says. He’s also having real awkward conversations with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar about basketball during the 70s and 80s too.

“Dave” has become the most popular comedy series in FX Network’s history, and there’s more on the way: FX has renewed the semi-autobiographical show about rapper and comedian Dave Burd, Aka Lil Dicky, for a second season. FX announced that the series, which stars Burd, Taylor Misiak, Andrew Santino, GaTa, Travis Bennett, and Christine Ko, has enjoyed considerable viewership numbers and dethroned “Atlanta” as its most popular comedy series.
The 10-episode “Dave” averaged 5.32 million viewers per installment across linear, VOD, and streaming, according to FX. Season 1 of “Dave” is available for streaming on FX on Hulu and Season 2 will premiere sometime in 2021. But there’s a catch: the comparison for viewers isn’t exactly apples-to-apples, as”Atlanta” was on FX and then only streamed on FXNow.
“We set out to make something special and it’s so gratifying to see the response this show has gotten,” Burd said in a statement.

Fueled by strong digital viewing, Fxx’s new comedy Dave has been a breakout. And now the series co-created by and starring Dave Burd has been renewed for a second season, which will premiere in 2021.
The recently concluded first season of Dave has officially become FX Networks’ most-watched comedy series ever with an average episodic audience of 5.32 million (and growing) total viewers to-date across linear, VOD and streaming. It eclipsed the previous FX record holder Atlanta, which averaged 5.2 million total viewers on all platforms in its first season.
Dave has taken the ratings crown after posting impressive week-to-week viewership growths of more than 1 million multiple times. Of course, there are asterisks to the Dave-Atlanta comparison. Both totals include linear, VOD and streaming, but Dave is benefiting from streaming on a much bigger platform, Hulu via FX on Hulu; Atlanta was available on the now-defunct FX Now. Lil Dicky’s Fxx show is scoring some not so lil viewership numbers.
The rapper, real name David Burd (hence the title), and his new series “Dave” are averaging 4.8 million total viewers per episode across all platforms, which represents a ridiculous 2112% increase over its on-air average of just 217,000 viewers.
The audience for the Fxx is so large that it could be on course to overtake “Atlanta” as the FX Networks’ most watched comedy. Season 1 of the Donald Glover series currently beats it with an average 5.2 million viewers, but “Dave” still has half its season left to air. “Dave” is clearly finding its audience via word of mouth, as over the past two weeks, its average audience per episode has increased by 1.2 million total viewers, per FX.
In episode 6, titled “Talent Shows,” which airs tonight, Dave finds himself in Philly for his first concert ever, and the gang stays with his parents.

Dave Burd (stage name Lil Dicky) has successfully parlayed his strong online following into television success — most of which comes from digital viewing. The rapper-comedian’s new FX comedy series Dave has been a breakout hit, averaging 4.8 million viewers per episode for its five episodes to date across linear, video-on-demand and streaming viewing (most current).
That ranks as the second-largest average audience of any season of an FX Networks comedy, just behind the first season of Atlanta (5.2 million). Given its growth trajectory — Dave‘s average audience per episode has increased by 1.2 million viewers in the past two weeks, having averaged 3.6 million total viewers on March 20 — the show is on track to eclipse Atlanta‘s tally soon.

Exclusive: FX Networks has given a pilot green light to Platform, a half-hour anthology pilot, written, directed and executive produced by B.J. Novak (The Office).
Lucas Hedges, Jon Bernthal, Kaitlyn Dever, Boyd Holbrook, O’Shea Jackson Jr., George Wallace and Ed Asner are among the actors set to star in the pilot, with the deals for few others being finalized. FX Productions is the studio.
Platform, which starts filming today, is an anthological series that uses the boldest issues of our times as a jumping-off point to tell singular, character-driven stories about the world we live in today.
I hear the plan is to film two episodes, which are very different in tone — one is said to be more dramatic, tackling a tough subject, and the other more comedic, with a small animation element.
Novak was a writer, executive producer, director and played Ryan Howard on The Office, which aired from 2005-13 on NBC.
