On July 15th, the independent film community’s rowdy, activist uncle, Mark Ruffalo, tweeted a call to action: “How about we all jump into indies now? Content creators create a film & TV-making system alongside the studio & streaming networks? So there is actual competition. Then we just do what we always do — create great content & they can buy it, or we take it out ourselves & We share in those sales.”
I say, “Hell yeah, Uncle Mark!” From where I stand, strike season is the perfect time to answer his call by making a short film. For those of you asking, “am I really allowed to make a short film under strike rules?” or “what about standing in solidarity with my SAG-AFTRA and WGA friends?” Both organizations have very clear parameters on what is and is not allowed but for now yes, you can and you should make short films right now.

Amid the increase of anti-Asian racism and the disproportionate impact of Covid-19 on American communities of color, Endemol Shine North America’s diversity and inclusion committee, launched last year, held its first virtual event for its offices in the U.S., Mexico and Brazil to discuss how the entertainment industry can address these issues.
The panel featured Marva Smalls, ViacomCBS’ global head of inclusion and executive VP of public affairs, CNN contributor and South China Morning Post columnist Jeff Yang, and Madison Media Management CEO and chairman and former NBCUniversal exec Paula Madison.
Though the outbreak was, early on, called “the great equalizer,” Endemol Shine North America chief executive Chris Abrego noted that characterization “couldn’t be anything further from the truth.”

The world premiere of David Henry Hwang’s musical play “Soft Power” brought droves of Asian-Americans to the Ahmanson in downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday.
Ming-Na Wen; Jeff Yang, his son Hudson and his fellow “Fresh Off the Boat” cast members, Forrest Wheeler, Evan Chen and Lucille Soong; “Silicon Valley’s” Tzi Ma; and Parvesh Cheema were among guests at the opening.

At the Vespaio after-party Hwang said the omission was deliberate, inspired by Rodgers & Hammerstein’s musical “The King and I,” which never mentioned the king’s name either. Instead, Clinton is a...
