Days after the death by snake bite of reality show star Pastor Jamie Coots, National Geographic Channel has set a special tribute episode of Snake Salvation to air tomorrow, February 20. Coots was one of the leads on Nat Geo’s show following two Southern Pentecostal pastors and practitioners of the “Holiness” faith, which partook in the dangerous tradition of snake handling. Coots died Saturday after refusing medical attention for a rattlesnake bite incurred during church service. Snake Salvation: They Shall Take Up Serpents will air Thursday, Feb. 20 at 10 Pm Et/Pt. “We wanted to air this episode tomorrow night as a way to give perspective to the world-wide discussion his death has caused,” Nat Geo Ceo David Lyle said in a statement. The special episode will highlight Coots’ struggle to procure and maintain the collection of venomous snakes used in his church, including a trip to buy diamondbacks in Texas.

Updated: National Geographic Channel is committed to live extreme-event programming. To that end, Nat Geo announced two such projects this morning on the first day of the TCA Summer TV Press Tour. Bob Ballard, aka “the guy who found the Titanic,” will make a dive into an underwater volcano off the coast of Granada. The volcano is so treacherous — a “ticking time bomb,” NatGeo calls it — that no ships are allowed within 10 miles of it, said National Geographic Channels CEO David Lyle. The live dive, Volcano Dive: Live will be telecast Sunday, November 17 and will cap Nat Geo’s celebration of the National Geographic Society’s 125th anniversary. Additionally, rock climber Alex Honnold will climb one of the world’s highest skyscrapers, without a safety line, this fall, the network also announced. The news comes on the heels of Discovery’s recent special in which Nick Wallenda crossed the Little Colorado River Gorge.

Fill in the blank. Maybe the person saw the channel's documentary about escort services, or a show about a man who sculpts with a chain saw. New York -- The team behind "Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden" is saying the television movie was not recut to give a starring role to President Barack Obama two days before the presidential election.
National Geographic Channels CEO David Lyle says the film was indeed recut – but to show less footage of the president than an earlier version of the film.
"I think the end titles run longer than Obama's time on screen," Lyle said.
The movie has been accused by conservatives of having a political agenda in part because of its Nov. 4 premiere date and its backing by Obama supporter Harvey Weinstein. On Wednesday, The New York Times reported that a copy of the film provided to the paper showed that it had been recut to strengthen Obama's role.

Los Angeles — A TV documentary series about an Anabaptist community in Montana offers a "distorted" and contrived image, bishops representing the Hutterite faith in the U.S. and Canada said Thursday.
John Stahl, Peter Entz and John Waldner, bishops for the three sects encompassing the roughly 50,000 Hutterites and 500 colonies in North America, said in a joint statement they are "deeply disappointed" in National Geographic Channel's "American Colony: Meet the Hutterites."
The 10-part series that began airing last month promised a rare inside look at Hutterite colony life, focusing on the King Ranch Colony.
"What was promised by the producers to be a `factual documentary' is, in fact, a distorted and exploitative version of Hutterite life," the bishops said, one that paints all Hutterites in a "negative and inaccurate way."
The bishops accused producers of contriving scenes and dialogue in a "make believe" portrayal of "how we live and the spiritual beliefs we cherish.

Los Angeles -- Bertha Hofer deserves to be one of the summer's biggest, if unlikeliest, TV stars.
In the narrowest sense, she's yet another working mom opening up her life to the camera. But Hofer is part of an unusual and intriguing world, a small Montana religious commune depicted in National Geographic Channel's "American Colony: Meet the Hutterites."
Hofer, 52, a widowed mother of three balancing her religion's strict tenets with her children's hopes for the future, is a focus of the series. Her unvarnished and soulful face, the kind that cannot hide its heart, recalls the careworn migrant mother in Dorothea Lange's classic 1930s Depression-era portrait.

Following National Geographic Channel's announcement of its upcoming TV show, "Wicked Tuna," and my consequent slam, I received a phone call inviting me to Nat Geo headquarters. Our discussion seemed a big improvement over their press release. Yes, really.
As announced, this show will feature commercial fishing for bluefin tuna. With or without the cameras, those boats kill fish. And these fish are spectacular. They're half-ton warm-blooded animals capable of swimming at highway speeds and crossing oceans.
The global bluefin tuna enterprise is perhaps the most bizarre -- certainly the most controversial -- fishery in the world. They are classified "endangered" by the global union of conservation scientists; their problem arises with sushi dealers in Japan who pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for one fish. The insane prices stimulate intense overfishing; and -- like Mitt Romney's tax rate -- it's all perfectly legal.
