Rocco’s Dinner Party: a good old-fashioned reality food competition where three chefs cook a dinner for frequent Top Chef judge Rocco Dispirito.
Let’s be honest, chefs take themselves way too seriously. Contestant #1, Geoff, thinks cooking is a symphony and he is the conductor. The restaurant is the opera house and there’s always a fat lady.
Contestant #2, Britt, believes she is going to head an empire with her culinary abilities, or maybe just a Chuck-e-Cheese.
Contestant #3, J.J, is convinced that his whole family will hate him if he doesn’t win this competition, because he’s been “cooking since the age 6 and everyone’s watching.”
Rocco: You think it's hard becoming a Navy Seal? That's nothing
compared to cooking a meal I approve of!
Once we know the ridiculously high stakes involved with cooking food, Dispirito comes in to deliver the challenge: He has 6 guests coming over...

This season, Top Chef Masters made a number of changes to its format. Overall, they have not helped what was already a great show. Let's start with the good. Curtis Stone is a far better host than Kelly Choi, though he is overexposed and sometimes irritating (we know you're a chef, too, you don't have to keep reminding us). And the format, which just borrows from its parent series, is an improvement over the first...

Top Chef Masters is serving up something new this season — actually, several new things. In last night’s premiere, we learned that Australian chef and Celebrity Apprentice contestant Curtis Stone has replaced pretty charisma vacuum Kelly Choi as the show’s host, while judges Gael Greene and Jay Raynor have been succeeded by former Gourmet editrix Ruth Reichl. Perhaps most importantly, the series has also traded its old, tournament-style format for a more conventional reality show scheme — all of the contestants started competing at the same time, and one of them will be eliminated each episode. That’s a lot of change to stomach,...

In watching tonight's season premiere of Top Chef Masters, the haute cuisine culinary competition series that spun out of Top Chef a few seasons back, it's easy to get a sense of what's been lost rather than what's been gained by the format changes. (The latter can be summed up in two words: Ruth Reichl.) Gone is Kelly Choi, she of the perfectly coiffed mane. Gone is the complicated but novel star-based ratings system. Gone are the early heats. What remains is rather like Top Chef. Or exactly like Top Chef, in fact, save for the experience of the master chefs competing here and the fact that their winnings go to the charities of their choice rather than into bankrolling a restaurant. Choi has been replaced by suddenly ubiquitous Aussie chef Curtis Stone, yanked onto the cable channel while still appearing on NBC's America's Next Great Restaurant. He's affable enough...

It's hotter in the kitchen this time around on Top Chef Masters.
In Wednesday's third season premiere, three of the 12 master cheftestants will fail to complete their Quickfire dishes (failures made all the more painful because the chefs are paired off in head-to-head combat). The group is then immediately hit with a round of Restaurant Wars.
Bringing out the contestants' competitive edge is just part of an overall revamp to the Top Chef spin-off, which arrives following viewership declines between the first and second seasons (2.2 million viewers vs. 1.6 million). Gone are host Kelly Choi, critics Gael Greene and Jay Rayner, the five-star rating scale and the tournament-style elimination. The masters are still playing for charity but, by design, they'll feel more...

"Top Chef Masters" would like to do a '60s theme and for that they have invited Christina Hendricks. The "Mad Men" star and her actor husband Geoffrey Arend have taped an episode of the cooking competition show as two guest judges.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the challenge which involves the couple is dishes from the '60s, the era portrayed in the first season of "Mad Men". Bravo is yet to announce the celebrity chef contestants and the show's premiere date. But Hendicks' episode can be seen in the second week.

Top Chef Masters’ second episode was a lot more watchable than the premiere, with a come-from-behind, against-the-odds surprise win. Chef Carmen Gonzalez lost her food (and precious preparation time) when, upon arriving at the elimination challenge, she realized she had to drive back in Los Angeles traffic to the Top Chef kitchen to pick up the stew she’d left behind.
But we get ahead of ourselves. In this week’s lineup, three New York-based chefs (Gonzalez, Aquavit’s Marcus Samuelsson and David Burke) faced off against Houston’s Monica Pope and Seattle’s jolly Thierry Rautureau.
The quick fire challenge made us very, very hungry. Make a grilled cheese for Kelly Choi! Rather than plain cheddar on sourdough, options ranged from Carmen’s Manchego with cilantro lime to Monica’s feta on date raisin bread, which took the win. Unlike most dishes, these seemed within easy reach to replicate at home.

One of our favorite reality shows, Top Chef Masters, returns for a second season tomorrow night, April 7 at 10:00 Pm.
In a very unusual twist for a reality show, Top Chef is inviting back past players for another attempt at the title. Graham Elliot Bowles, Wylie Dufresne, Ludo Lefebvre, Rick Moonen, Mark Peel, and Jonathan Waxman were all eliminated in the first round of Season 1, but they will return for a second shot at taking home the prize for their charity.
Also returning is host, Kelly Choi, and judges Gael Greene, James Oseland, and Jay Rayner. Joining them will be Gail Simmons who sits at judges table in the original Top Chef series as well.
From this sneak peak video, it looks like egos flare, knives fly, and a good time will be had by all viewers. The new cast is made up of a wide array of 22 culinary icons...

"Top Chef Masters 2" really turns up the heat with a slew of fun celebrity guests as well as returning chef'testants seeking redemption.
Among the guests will be the cast of "Modern Family" (perhaps a family style meal challenge?), "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening (yellow food?), Hank Azaria who voices Moe and others on "The Simpsons," "Lie to Me" actor Mekhi Phifer, Olympic swimmer Jason Lezak and a trio of the "Real Housewives of Orange County," Lynne Curtin, Alexis Bellino and Tamra Barney, reports EW.
The site also lists Andrew Zimmerman as a guest, but since Wikipedia says Zimmerman is a professor of German history at George Washington University, we're going to guess that they meant Andrew Zimmern, host of Travel Channel's "Bizarre Foods." German food, while exotic to some and rich in history, probably isn't as challenging as what Zimmern will bring to the table. [Update: In a press release sent out Wednesday, Bravo confirmed Zimmern's participation.]

Construction sites are usually just urban eyesores, but Kooho Jung and Hayeon Kelly Choi have designed a space that could one day make people look forward to neighborhood construction. The Symbiotic Green Wall turns the barrier between construction and the street into a living ecosystem, complete with grass pots, birds nests, and pollution monitors.
The wall is completely self-sustaining thanks to a built-in rainwater collection system that gathers water from the roof as well as from the construction site within. Once collected, the water is purified and used as nourishment for the wall. Rainwater is also used as part of a sprinkler system to eliminate dust inside the construction site.
Of course, the Symbiotic Green Wall has never been tested in a real world setting, and it's easy to argue that putting it up is more trouble than it's worth for short-lived construction jobs. But for construction jobs that last months or even years,...

Bravo's Top Chef has become the network's reality-competition stronghold following the hasty departure of Project Runway, and now it produces spin-offs faster than the average network crime drama. Top Chef: Just Desserts, a competition for pastry chefs, will begin airing sometime in 2010. Padma Lakshmi's return as Catatonic Emcee remains to be seen, but I definitely prefer her over Top Chef Masters's Kelly Choi thanks to one of Lakshmi's fantastic, Quickfire-related accomplishments.

I was initially a bit resistant to "Top Chef Masters," but it has become an acceptable placeholder for Bravo in recent weeks. Host Kelly Choi hasn't made me stop missing Padma & Tom, while for a food critic, Judge James Oseland seems mighty confused by a lot of culinary exploration. It took a little while to realize that, Ludo Lefebvre aside, "Top Chef Masters" wasn't about gawking at spectacular flameouts, but was actually a celebration of the confident genius of titans like Rick Bayless and Hubert Keller. But enough with the placebos! "Top Chef" returns on Wednesday (July 19) night, with...

That led Choi to a career on local New York City TV as an expert on Manhattan restaurants and global cuisine. Her popularity in the Big Apple led Bravo to sign her up as the host of the ultimate exhibition of culinary competition, Top Chef Masters.

Commercial director Joseph Kosinski (Tron Legacy) is developing a new feature film project for Radical Pictures titled Oblivion. You might recognize the title because it is the same title of a "illustrated novel" announced back in February, written by Kosinski with art by newcomer Tae Young Choi. For those of you who don't yet know Kosinski's work, check out some of his commercials, and the VFX concept footage that he directed to convince Disney to greenlight Tron 2 -- all of which is very impressive. What is Oblivion about? Details and artwork after the jump. Kosinski has been developing the idea for the last four years, which he had initially hoped to make his directorial debut with the story before Tron came along. He had conceived the idea as a "very spare science fiction film with a small cast but big ideas and big landscapes" that could be made on...

Tonight on Top Chef Masters, knives are drawn and the display of extraordinary talent begins in the most ordinary of places . like a grocery store, where the chefs are met with the classic quickfire "Aisle Trial" (a la Top Chef, season 3). Last week's action saw Chef Moonen.s brandade of scallop and shrimp dazzle the critics, as did Noren.s slow cooked salmon with chorizo and broccoli. Moonen.s lemon panna cotta was a sight to behold, which had Jay Rayner tell Kelly Choi that a perfect panna cotta .should wobble like a woman.s breast.. Last week's misses included a smoked tea whipped cream that judge James Oseland said tasted like bacon. Last week.s winner was Michael...

Bravo brings its "A" game to the kitchen as 24 world-renowned chefs cook up a storm — in some truly bizarre situations — on Top Chef Masters (premiering Wednesday, June 10 at 10 pm/Et).
But why would these distinguished chefs mess with their already meritorious reputations? "It takes some major guts [to be on this show] because they're all well established and don't need to raise their profile in any way, shape or form," says host Kelly Choi, the new Padma. "So they're kind of already messing with something that's pristine, and they can only ...

If you're at all like me, you've been going through some serious Top Chef withdrawal these past few months and while the series itself won't be returning until sometime later this fall (with a Vegas-set edition), you can get a taste of the culinary competition series by tuning in tonight to spin-off series Top Chef Masters on Bravo. Hosted by Kelly Choi, Top Chef Masters seems similar--on the surface, anyway--to its predecessor in that several judges square off through both a Quickfire and an Elimination Challenge. However, in Top Chef Masters, the chefs are more well-known than the original series' contestants... and in many cases have appeared on the series as guest judges. The pressure to win then is even more severe. In addition to bragging rights at being named the ultimate Top Chef Master, these master chefs are competing for donations to the charity of their choice and the...

You're probably familiar with Bravo's Top Chef, the cooking competition show that has delivered great ratings to the network since the beginning, but now we're taking things up a notch. It's all big name chefs this time around, several of whom have been guest judges on the regular version of the show, and we're doing it all for charity. Our host for this excursion is Kelly Choi, creator and host of Eat Out NY, and we have some interesting (though possibly not so camera-friendly) judges. Gael Greene has been a food critic for longer than you want to know, but I'm not sure she adds a lot of zest to the show. Jay Rayner is a celebrated critic from Britain, and probably the show's only hope for a judge that's at all watchable. Finally, James Oseland is editor of Saveur magazine. In this version of the show, four of our...
