Exclusive: Paramount+ has given a formal series green light to The Turkish Detective, an adaptation of Barbara Nadel’s Cwa Silver Dagger Award-winning novels featuring Detective Inspectors Cetin Ikmen and Mehmet Suleyman.
Haluk Biligner (Baba), Ethan Kai and Yasemin Kay Allen (The Usual Suspects) have been tapped to star in the series, set in modern-day Istanbul and produced by Miramax and leading Turkish production company Ay Yapim, in association with Vis, Paramount’s international studio. Filming is set to begin this month in Istanbul. The Turkish Detective is slated to debut globally on Paramount+ in 2023.
Written and executive produced by Ben Schiffer (Skins) and directed by Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo), the eight-episode first season is based on the 24-novel series and depicts the lead character Inspector Cetin Ikmen (Biligner), his partner Mehmet Suleyman (Kai) and Detective Ayse Farsakoglu (Allen) going through ups and downs as they solve crimes.

WME said Thursday that is has promoted seven agents to partner and 17 more staffers to agent in the company’s Music division, news that comes after it saw clients from Silk Sonic and Olivia Rodrigo to Chris Stapleton, Foo Fighters and Jazmine Sullivan score victories at Sunday’s Grammy Awards.

Postcard Records, the influential indie record label behind bands including Orange Juice and Aztec Camera is the basis for a feature film from new Scottish producer Freedom, which has struck a development and production deal with BBC Studios.
Freedom is developing a film based on Simon Goddard’s book Simply Thrilled, which charts the “preposterous story” of the short lived but seminal Scottish label.
It one of a number of projects for the fledgling firm, which was set up by former BBC Drama, World Productions and Stv development executive Mike Ellen. He previously ran the scripted slate at Amy indie On The Corner and produced Scottish soap River City for two years.
The company will be supported by BBC Studios’ production, business, commercial affairs and distribution teams, while the international division BBC Studios will also have a first look on distribution titles.
Ellen is also working on a four-part drama...

Casting is getting underway for Cheerleaders 3D, a UK-based comedy dance film from Skins writer Ben Schiffer, and Misfits and Scouting Book for Boys director Tom Harper.
When an American teacher on an exchange programme attempts to bring cheerleading to a run-down school in Hackney, the squad she manages to recruit isn’t exactly what she had in mind. They’re bolshy, way out of shape and don’t seem to be interested in much other than fighting each other.
But in the quest to win the UK Cheerleading Championships, these inner London teenagers bring their own unique take to America’s latest export and discover that it can be a celebration of their own glittering identity.

The annual ranking of the best unproduced UK film scripts, this year’s list was just revealed this week. Eighty industry insiders were polled on their favorites; films such as Nowhere Boy followed by Jane Eyre were tops was tops in 2008, while 2009's List saw Good Luck Anthony Belcher grab the top spot which has yet to go into production, but films #3 (Now Is Good), #4 (Salmon Fishing In The Yemen) and #6 (Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) are currently in different stages of prod. Top of this year’s poll was Sex Education, written by Jamie Minoprio and Jonathan M Stern, who contributed to the writing of I Want Candy and both St Trinian’s films, which may be a clue to the tone of the film. Said to concern a schoolboy’s plot to take revenge on one of his teachers by seducing his wife, the script is being developed by BBC Films and Ruby Films.
