Joanna Werner.
When Joanna Werner did a media course at Rmit she aimed to be journalist but her career took a different path as the head of Werner Film Productions.
So when Michael Lucas, whom she had met in a writers’ room five years ago, pitched her his concept of a drama set in TV newsroom, she jumped at the idea.
After a lengthy development process the ABC commissioned The Newsreader, which follows the unlikely bond between a young TV reporter and a ‘difficult’ female newsreader.
Emma Freeman will direct the six-part series scripted by Lucas (who co-created Five Bedrooms with Christine Bartlett), Jonathan Gavin, Niki Aken and Kim Ho, which is now in pre-production in Melbourne, supported by Screen Australia and Film Victoria.

"Borderline" had Kate Reed headed in a direction that a year ago would have made me very happy. But fast forward to the present and that same decision left me cold.
When Kate told Justin she was looking for a casual fling between them with no complications you could tell by the look on his face that he wanted more. He's wanted more from the very beginning of the show but being back in Kate's bed made agreeing to her terms worth it. Still, I knew that wouldn't last long.
I've always liked Justin and rooted for him and Kate to find their way back. But for a man with such an innate sense of right and wrong, the revelation that he cheated on her definitely put a damper on those hopes. With that in the back of my mind and even though I knew he was joking with Lauren,...

Though the 32-old Sarah Shahi seems far too beautiful to be a feisty lawyer like Kate Reed in USA Network Friday night series Fairly Legal, the way she plays against her looks illustrates that she understands her character far too well.
When the series debuted last season, Kate's father has just died, leaving her and the law firm he founded to adjust to his loss just as she changed professions from lawyer to mediator. To work there at his San Francisco firm, she had to endure her dad's much younger wife as heir to the firm and her boss.
With this second season, their tussle involves further twists and a new partner who both abrades and attracts Kate. As the show proceeds, episodes grapple with fairness, winning and the law.
Q: In this role, what responsibility do you feel towards lawyers?
SS: I actually don't feel any responsibility towards [them], to be honest with you.

USA‘s Fairly Legal is a show that didn’t click with me right away, and that’s something pretty rare when it comes to USA efforts. It was a little too interested in its own gimmick, and played to hard at selling the “mediation as character trait,” angle by which it was trying to develop, not only the main character, but all of the characters she ran into.
But, it’s also a show that has, I think, taken on the idea of working through the flaws and stumbles, and developed quickly into a show that presents a very different persona (as a show) than what we had during the first few episodes.
I want to give you a little preview of the next episode, which involves Kate getting in a little too deep with a corporate whistle blower, but I also have a great Prize Pack available for one lucky winner.

"Fairly Legal" returned for its second season last Friday (March 16) and with it brought a lot of changes for Kate Reid and cohorts. The firm is in financial trouble, there's a smarmy new partner to deal with, Justin laid a huge confession on Kate and then her boat blew up. Rough week.
The show is back Friday, March 23 with "Start Me Up" and Zap2it has an exclusive sneak peek clip (above), where Lauren is getting a new client - a fashion designer who wants his former employee to adhere to her non-compete agreement. The only problem is, said former employee is a client of Ben Grogan, the new partner at Reed and Reed. Uh oh.
In other news, Kate is asked by Justin to mediate an agreement between the FBI and a local hospital. We imagine working with him will be just aces for Kate.

When USA renewed "Fairly Legal" for a second season, they replaced showrunner Michael Sardo with Peter Ocko and decided to make some "creative changes," which entailed focusing more on the core characters than the mediation of the week, making it more of a character study than a legal procedural.
In the Season 2 premiere, it's hard to say whether those changes were readily apparent. On the one hand, there were some wonderful story arcs introduced that will play out all season - Reed & Reed being in trouble financially and bringing in a new partner, Justin deciding to challenge his current (awful) boss for the District Attorney's job, Justin's infidelity confession.
However, a large portion of the episode was still dominated by the case of the week, with Kate playing Nancy Drew instead of mediating. We're not criticizing - it was an interesting case and any time Michael Hogan gets punched by John Aylward,...

I've given USA Network a little bit of grief for sticking so closely to its formulas the past. But when it comes to "Fairly Legal" (Friday, 9 p.m. Et), I have to admit, I wish the show followed the network's mandates a little more closely.
I watch "Psych" not because the show is reinventing the procedural detective genre, but because I enjoy Gus and Shawn's co-dependent silliness. I watch "Burn Notice" because I want to see Fiona, Michael and Sam defeat bad guys as a team, and because I enjoy seeing how those core relationships evolve. The best thing about "White Collar" is not just its style and intelligence, but the way that the show keeps adding nuances and tension to the complicated bond between its law-enforcement guy and its slick con man. All those shows have entertaining supporting characters, but the main draws with USA programs are not just the sparky pace and tone,...

Friday nights just got a lot brighter entertainment wise with the return of Fairly Legal and In Plain Sight on the USA Network. Legal is back for its second season while Sight is starting its fifth and final season. If Legal could evolve into a fully satisfactory series like Sight then there would definitely be double trouble on Friday nights.
Legal got off to a rough start last year. Sarah Shahi, who plays mediator Kate Reed, never really fulfilled her promise in the role. She was too cute, too quirky, too full of herself. Plus the role was written so that she dominated the series and rolled over all the members of the supporting cast which included Virginia Williams, Michael Trucco and Baron Vaughn.
The basis of the show is that Kate's father has died, leaving the law firm he established to Kate, her brother and his fairly new wife...

Chicago – Two of USA’s hits return tonight with the second-season premiere of “Fairly Legal” and the fifth-and-final-season premiere of “In Plain Sight.” Both shows work largely because of the talent brought to them by their lead actresses, a welcome change of pace for a network that can often feel a little bit testosterone-heavy (“Psych,” “White Collar,” “Burn Notice” — all driven by their male protagonists). Sadly, the writing could still use some work on both dramas but no one can deny the charismatic skill of the women at their centers.
TV Rating: 3.0/5.0
There was a brief moment there in season two when I thought “In Plain Sight” might actually develop into USA’s best post-“Monk” show. That wasn’t meant to be. The show spun its wheels a few too many times dramatically and never found a way to play up to the strengths of its super-talented star, Mary McCormack.

Law-abiding or not, Sarah Shahi is stepping back into the shoes of her "Fairly Legal" character on Fri., March 16 for the series' second season.
Shahi returns as Kate Reed, a 29-year-old woman who leaves her job as a lawyer for a position as a mediator. In this exclusive clip from "Fairly Legal's" Season 2 premiere, "Satisfaction," Kate has her first meeting with the intelligent, quick-witted trial attorney Ben Grogan (Ryan Johnson).
With Ben and Kate throwing around flirty remarks about "being a schoolteacher" and "not wanting any foreplay," it becomes clear that their relationship may result in a breach of professional boundaries as Season 2 of the legal drama continues.
Tune in to the season premiere "Fairly Legal" on Friday, March 16 at 9 p.m. Et on USA, and follow Shahi's live feed as she answers fan questions during the episode on Fairly Legal Character Chatter.

Michael Trucco has already made it clear that Fairly Legal is about to get a fun shake up when it returns for its second season. Helping the USA Network series change things up when it returns on Friday, March 16?
Ryan Johnson, who debuts on the premiere as lawyer Ben Grogan.
Anyone knows that being the new guy on the block, especially within an already established group, isn't the easiest task. Fans can be skeptical of a new actor being thrown into the mix. Having seen the season two premiere during my set visit last month, though, I can assure viewers that this is one likable new character.
Within minutes of making an appearance, Grogan is both flirting and verbally sparring with Sarah Shahi's Kate Reed.

Changes are coming to Fairly Legal. That much was obvious after I visited the show on location in Vancouver last month.
After viewing the massively large and wonderfully spacious set of the Reed & Reed law offices (and, trust me, the detail goes all the way down to the sticky notes and legal pads placed on all the characters' desks), I had a chance to sit down for a casual conversation with the actors about what's in store for the second season.
Michael Trucco (Ada Justin Patrick), for instance, took a break from filming a pivotal court scene to chat about his excitement for his character's growth and movement away from not simply acting as "a singular entity for Kate’s purposes only."
Trucco admitted that the season's reshaping is a positive transition, as it focuses "less about the particulars of the mediations and of the cases that we’re doing...

Reed & Reed is in big trouble when Fairly Legal returns for its second season. So in response, head honcho Lauren calls in Ben Grogan (Aussie import Ryan Johnson), a smart, morally ambiguous lawyer who’s sure to be a thorn in Kate’s (Sarah Shahi) side. But as evident in this exclusive clip from the show’s March 16 premiere, they’re also a pretty darn good team. (Not to mention, they ooze chemistry!)

Characters Welcome. It's the slogan USA has used to enormous success over the last few years and it applies perfectly to season two of Fairly Legal.
Having seen the March 16 premiere during a set visit to Vancouver late last month, I can safely say that the fantastically charming characters have returned, ready to take their personal stories to the next level and continue mediating in and out of the office.
Fairly Legal Season 2 Preview
The first season left legal mediator Kate Reed's (Sarah Shahi) personal and professional life in shambles, as this legal mind may have found success professionally, but her results with personal relationships didn't match the outcome she achieved for clients.
The re-burgeoning connection between Kate and her ex-husband, Justin Patrick (Michael Trucco), came to a crashing divide, leaving both disappointed and heartbroken, while Kate's stepmother and new owner of law offices Reed & Reed, Lauren Reed (Virginia Williams...

Ever since USA Network’s Fairly Legal added Aussie Ryan Johnson to the cast for Season 2 — as a “sharp trial attorney/potential romantic interest for Kate” — the question from fans has been: What does this mean for Kate and her semi-estranged husband Justin (played by Michael Trucco)?
What it means is “a lot of trouble,” series star Sarah Shahi told me at a recent NBC soiree. “Yeah… Justin’s not going to have some very happy times.”

When there is a film that is about Nazis dabbling with the occult, ears are going to perk, and the question is would it have turned the tide of World War II? With The Devil’s Rock, all those tender loving thoughts are going to get explored again with its DVD release Feb 14.
Shades of Enemy Mine can be found at one level, and some nods to the Indiana Jones franchise can be found at another. The Nazis did try to look for the Spear of Destiny, Ark of the Covenant and Holy Grail before and during the war. Viewers who are not acquainted with history or archaeology may not know of Hitler’s preoccupation with connecting to the occult.

USA will pair up two of its female-led series on Friday nights starting in March when the second season of "Fairly Legal" and the fifth and final season of "In Plain Sight" make their debuts.
Both shows will premiere Friday, March 16, with "Fairly Legal" leading off at 9 p.m. Et and "In Plain Sight" following at 10. "Fairly Legal" will run for 13 episodes, but "Ips'" victory lap will last only eight weeks.
"In Plain Sight" will pick up more or less where it left off at the end of Season 4, with federal marshal Mary (Mary McCormack) trying to balance her job and new motherhood and Marshall (Frederick Weller) still both in a relationship with Abigail (Rachel Boston) and pining for his partner. USA also teases some sort of resolution to the mystery surrounding Mary's long-lost father before the series ends.

Could this be the beginning of the end for "Fairly Legal"?
USA announced both the Sarah Shahi-headlined series and "In Plain Sight" will move to Friday nights for their upcoming new seasons, launching March 16, according to Variety.
"Fairly Legal" aired Thursdays in its first season, which kicked off in January 2011, while "In Plain Sight" had been a Sunday night staple. However, in August, it was announced that the Mary McCormack-starring show would get a fifth and final season, shortened from its usual 13 to eight episodes.
"Fairly Legal's" pick up for a second season was announced in May. Shortly thereafter, it was revealed that the sophomore series will have a new showrunner: "The Office" executive producer Peter Ocko. Exclusive: Ryan Johnson (Ghost Rider) has joined USA Network’s drama Fairly Legal as a new regular for Season 2. On the series starring Sarah Shahi as lawyer-turned-mediator Kate Reed, Johnson will play Ben Grogan, a sharp, up-and-coming trial attorney with a knack for making money. It’s...
