At age 29, Kyle Westphal is an emerging fashion designer with a degree in design from Drexel University, a vast knowledge of fashion history, and work that has been featured on Refinery 29 and Instyle.com.
But there was a time when his parents couldn’t imagine such a bright future for him, back when Kyle was a child of six first diagnosed with autism. At that time, as revealed in the documentary Let Me Be Me, Jenifer and Jeff Westphal struggled with how best to support Kyle, who had gone from being an outgoing toddler to a hypersensitive young boy.
“They feared they might never develop a real connection to their child,” notes a description of the film, directed by Dan Crane and Katie Taber. “Withdrawn and constantly wrapping himself in fabric and blankets, Kyle was retreating from the world around him.”

ESPN Films has acquired the worldwide rights to “Fate of a Sport,” a documentary about the Premier Lacrosse League and its founder Paul Rabil that made its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on Wednesday, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Michael Doneger directed the film that was written by Dan Crane and executive produced by LeBron James.
“Fate of a Sport” follows Paul Rabil and his brother Mike Rabil, who over several years attempted to raise capital and poach the top players in lacrosse in order to launch his own Premier Lacrosse League during the global pandemic. The documentary shows how Rabil was forced to navigate the politics and lawsuits of launching a rival league while playing in it and spending over a decade as one of the more dominant and controversial players across professional lacrosse.

ESPN Films has acquired worldwide rights to the documentary “Fate of a Sport,” Variety has learned exclusively.
The deal was struck ahead of the film’s world premiere on Wednesday at the annual Tribeca Film Festival. Directed by Michael Doneger and written by Dan Crane, the expansive sports story was produced by Matt Tolmach (of the “Jumanji” and “Venom” franchises) and Doneger.
“Fate” follows trailblazing athlete Paul Rabil, who spent 11 years as one of the most dominant and controversial players in a professional lacrosse league that filmmakers described as “anything but professional.” Rabil and his brother Mike took matters into their own hands, documenting their journey raising capital, attempting to poach top players, fight off lawsuits and persevere through a global pandemic to launch the Premier Lacrosse League. Adding to the drama, Rabil must navigate the politics of playing in a league that he also runs.

‘Fate of a Sport’ From Executive Producer LeBron James Unveils First Trailer Before Tribeca Premiere
“Fate of a Sport,” premiering at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival, has unveiled its first trailer exclusively to Variety.
Covering the world of professional lacrosse and one of its most controversial and high-profile stars, Paul Rabil, the film deals in much more than triumph on the pitch — encompassing millions in capital fundraising, talent poaching and lawsuits from legacy athletic clubs, all against the backdrop of a global pandemic.
“Even in the regular lacrosse league, guys still have to have a second job,” a narrator explains in the clip, alluding to the fact that professional lacrosse is nowhere near as well-funded or rewarding for its players on the national stage. So Rabil and his brother Mike decided to break ranks and potentially sacrifice Paul’s decorated career to launch a league of their own (the Premier Lacrosse League).

A family’s unique process of connecting with their autistic son is chronicled in the new documentary feature “Let Me Be Me,” a trailer TheWrap can exclusively reveal.
The moving story uses home video footage to show how the Westphal family struggled to cope when their 6-year-old son Kyle was diagnosed with being on the Autism spectrum. “Back then, autism meant there’s nothing you can do and they have to go into an institution,” Kyle’s mother says in the trailer. But by embracing a unique treatment by which Kyle’s mother and father went into Kyle’s world rather than forcing him into theirs, Kyle felt empowered to embrace himself, his familial connection and his passion.
Indeed, Kyle explains in the trailer that as a kid his favorite film was Disney’s “Cinderella,” and as he became obsessed with dresses and fashion shows, his family embraced what he loved.

Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has picked up North American rights on Let Me Be Me, Dan Crane and Katie Taber’s documentary that will have its world premiere at Doc NYC this year.
The film is the latest from producer Jenifer Westphal’s Wavelength (Won’t You Be My Neighbor?).
When the Westphal family learned that their six-year-old Kyle was on the Autism spectrum, they feared they might never develop a real connection to their child. Withdrawn and constantly wrapping himself in fabric and blankets, Kyle was retreating from the world around him. Determined to find a way to connect, his parents embarked on an intense and radical journey which involved compassionately joining Kyle in his unique behaviors. Twenty years later, the entire family looks back at Kyle’s journey.
“It was incredible to have so much footage of young Kyle, and to be able to track his development from an isolated boy,...

If you've ever held witness to an "air guitar" competition, then you will undoubtedly share in my excitement for this next story. In early 2007, I had the honor of catching Alexandra Lipsitz's ferociously entertaining documentary Air Guitar Nation (read my review) during its extremely limited theatrical run. Later that year, fellow Fat Guy at the Movies Kevin Carr and I attended a regional air guitar competition in Columbus, Ohio and met Dan Crane (aka rocker Bjorn Turoque, pictured above with David "C-Diddy" Jung), one of the stars of the doc. It was an energetic, rockin' affair that has stuck with me ever since. So much so that earlier this year, I decided that the most rockin' double feature of all-time would be a double-bill of Air Guitar Nation and this year's sensation Anvil! The Story of Anvil. Trust me, that two-some of rock odysseys would blow your mind. I tell you that story to tell you...

Now this sounds like a very fun project. Earlier in the week it was announced (via the Risky Biz Blog) that actor/writer Justin Theroux (who last produced Tropic Thunder) would be signing on to produce Air Guitar, a story set in the competitive world of air guitar. The comedy was originally based on and inspired by the popular documentary Air Guitar Nation and the book To Air Is Human written by Dan Crane, who plays under the name Bjorn Turoque. Paramount has now brought on up-and-coming writers Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger ("Just Shoot Me!", "Teachers") to pen the script with Theroux producing and developing. Theroux is not considering directing or acting in Air Guitar at this time, which means this still needs a director. It was originally a DreamWorks project, but it ended up at Paramount once the studios split. In regards to the story, I'm pretty sure...

I feel like Justin Theroux is becoming some kind of muse to the masses, gently introducing them to the offbeat and cool before moving onto something else. The majority of American moviegoers probably don't know his name, but they feel his influence. Someday, every man in America will start wearing fedoras again, and not really know why. The reason will be Theroux. But first, he plans to hook everyone on Air Guitar, and introduce the masses to the offbeat world that cherishes the talent.
Variety reports that Theroux has signed on to produce Paramount's Air Guitar, a story centered around the self-consciously ironic world of air guitar championships. The project has been in the works at Paramount since 2006 or so, and is cobbled together from the 2006 documentary Air Guitar Nation and Dan Crane's book To Air Is Human. Screenwriting duties originally belonged to Ian Roberts and Jay Martel, but...
