Shortly after Chloe Okuno’s “Watcher” begins, Julia (Maika Monroe) asks her husband to wake her before he goes to work the next morning. But when she gets up the day is half gone, and all he did was send Julia a text with a creepy picture of her sleeping, insisting that she was just too danged pretty to listen to her.
Needless to say, this is not a man who’s going to believe his wife when she says she’s being stalked by a serial killer.
“Watcher” is a harsh and lonely thriller about a woman who moves to Romania to be with her husband, Francis when he gets a new job. Unlike Francis, she doesn’t speak the language. She’s trying to learn, but for now she’s dependent on locals who happen to understand English or her husband’s translations, which she assumes are accurate and flattering.

As a serial killer stalks the city, a young actress who just moved to town with her boyfriend notices a mysterious stranger watching her from across the street.
Do you always feel like somebody’s watching you? Well, hopefully not, but unfortunately for Maika Monroe’s character Julia in Chloe Okuno‘s brand new horror-thriller Watcher, she feels as if there is. It all begins when, one night while relaxing in her apartment, she notices what appears to be a mysterious stranger spying on her from across the street.
However, Julia quickly realizes that this strange person only appears to be watching her at night. In one scene early on, she talks to her boyfriend about her obviously scary situation, at which point he asks her where the stranger is watching her from,...

Last year, Chloe Okuno introduced the world to Ratmaa in her “Storm Drain” segment in V/H/S/94, and for 2022, she’s teamed up with Maika Monroe for Watcher, her confidently crafted debut feature film project. In this paranoia-fueled thriller, Monroe’s character, Julia, is transplanted to Bucharest when her husband, Francis (Karl Glusman), has to move there for his marketing job. Francis settles in rather easily, as he’s Romanian and can easily communicate with everyone; Julia, on the other hand, feels immediately isolated upon her arrival, and things only get worse for her as Francis spends more time at work and she’s often left to her own devices as she tries to navigate her way through her new surroundings and her new life. One night, Julia realizes that her neighbor (Burn Gorman) across the street is watching her from his darkened apartment, which does nothing to alleviate her anxieties.

If the camera lingered just a little more lasciviously on the opening sex scene, or if we got to ogle the bondage-clad ladies writhing in their glass booths in the underground strip club sequence longer, Chloe Okuno’s smart little feature debut might be said to herald the longed-for return of the lost, lamented erotic thriller. Without that skeevy edge, into an understatedly stylish commentary on modern womanhood, #NotAllMen and the latest incarnation of the concept of gaslighting.
There’s a little bit of “Repulsion” here, a dash of “Rear Window,” obviously, and an airy nod to “Lost in Translation,” but mostly “Watcher” plays in a less exalted sandbox. Its most overt homage is to 1993’s “Sliver,” with the key disclaimer that “Sliver,” already a terrible movie, would without the hilarious sex stuff be borderline unwatchable, and “Watcher” is actually pretty damn good. That’s thanks in large part to a terrific Maika Monroe,...
