Bulawayo, June 30 (Ians) Dhananjaya de Silva made a crucial 93 while Maheesh Theekshana starred with ball with his three-fer as Sri Lanka survived a huge scare from the Netherlands to register a tight 21-run win in their first Super Six match of Men’s Odi World Cup Qualifiers at the Bulawayo Sports Club, here on Friday.
Netherlands’ new-ball bowlers bowled with a lot of discipline and precision to reduce Sri Lanka to 96/6 in 25.1 overs. But that’s when Dhananjaya showed application and played as per the situation, while hitting eight fours and two sixes in his 93 off 111 balls.
He also stitched crucial partnerships with Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga to take Sri Lanka’s total to 213 in 47.4 overs. In defence of the total, Sri Lanka removed Netherlands batters at regular intervals.

Harare, June 24 (Ians) Netherlands produced a clinical all-round performance to beat Nepal by seven wickets and qualify for the Super Six of the Icc Mens Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2023, here on Saturday.
A scintillating 90 off 75 from Max O’Dowd helped Netherlands chase a target of 168 in merely 27.1 overs after their bowlers had bowled out Nepal for 167. With this loss, Nepal’s World Cup qualification hopes have ended.

Max O’Dowd and Vikramjit Singh blasted 86 runs off the first 13 overs before the latter fell to Sandeep Lamichhane (2/60). While Vikramjit (30) had three fours and one six to his name, O’Dowd was even more aggressive, striking four fours and sixes during their partnership. He brought up his fifty in merely 30 balls.

Harare, June 22 (Ians) Scott Edwards played a captain’s knock of 67 not out and helped Netherlands start their campaign in Mens Odi World Cup qualifiers with a five-wicket victory over USA in their Group A match at Takashinga Sports Club, here on Thursday.
After restricting USA to 211/8, Netherlands chased down the target with five wickets in hand and 40 balls remaining. Supporting Edwards was Teja Nidamanuru with his fine 58, as the duo shared a 72-run stand for the fifth wicket, followed by the Netherlands skipper stitching an unbroken 59-run partnership with Logan van Beek to take the Dutch over the line.
Barring a short spell of play when USA bowlers got through three quick Netherlands middle-order wickets, they were never quite in the contest to challenge Edwards & Co. Ali Khan marked his return in style as he pulled off a good catch to dismiss Vikramjit Singh in the fourth over.

Harare, June 20 (Ians) Impeccable performance by Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza helped Zimbabwe chase down a target of 316 in merely 40.5 overs against Netherlands, while Nepal changed gears towards the end of their innings to beat the USA with 42 balls to spare on the third day of the Icc Cricket World Cup Qualifiers here.

Harare/Bulawayo, June 16 (Ians) Former World Champions West Indies and Sri Lanka and hosts Zimbabwe went won both their warm-up matches ahead of the Icc Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 Qualifier tournament with comfortable victories over the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Scotland and the USA respectively.
Netherlands and Nepal will also enter the group stages on the back of victories, with the Netherlands overcoming Ireland while Nepal beat Oman.
Powell powers West Indies to win
Rovman Powell’s rapid century helped the West Indies regain composure after they slipped to 198-7 midway through their innings against UAE.
Nicholas Pooran’s 74 had helped the Windies to a commanding position before three wickets in nine balls saw his side stutter.
But Powell combined with Keemo Paul to put on 139 for the eighth wicket, the former eventually dismissed for 105 from just 55 balls as the Windies posted 374 for nine, the Icc informed in a report on its website.

Nieuwegein, May 24 (Ians) Players like Colin Ackermann, Fred Klaassen, Roelof van der Merwe, Paul van Meekeren, Brandon Glover and Timm van der Gugten have emerged as prominent absentees in the 15-member Netherlands squad selected for the Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifiers.
The six players, who are integral part of the Netherlands team, will miss the qualifying tournament due to their participation in the ongoing County Championship season in England, though young all-rounder Bas de Leede will play for the Netherlands, who will be led by experienced wicket-keeper Scott Edwards.
Netherlands hopes of qualifying for the Odi World Cup, to be held in India in October-November, will rely hugely on the likes of Max O’Dowd, Vikramjit Singh, Teja Nidamanuru and Edwards, as well as Logan van Beek, Viv Kingma, Aryan Dutt, Clayton Floyd and Saqib Zulfiqar.

Harare, March 25 (Ians) Wessly Madhevere and Gary Ballance struck half-centuries, while Sean Williams produced an all-round performance as Zimbabwe beat Netherlands by seven wickets in the third and final Odi to grab the series 2-1 at the Harare Sports Club, here on Saturday.
Though both sides are out of contention for direct qualification for the Icc Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, to be held in India in October-November, this series played an important role in giving them some game time in these conditions before the qualifying tournament takes place from June 18 to July 9 in Zimbabwe.
Netherlands and Zimbabwe will be among the 10 teams battling for two World Cup spots at the Qualifier.

Harare, March 23 (Ians) Off-spinner Wessly Madhevere turned the second One-dayer between Zimbabwe and Netherlands on its head, by picking up a hat-trick in the 43rd over, becoming the third player from his country to achieve this feat.
Zimbabwe had been bowled out for 271 in 49.2 overs, but like with the first Odi, drama unfolded in the second innings. The backbone of Zimbabwe’s happened to be a 104-run stand between Sean Williams (77) and Clive Madande (52). For the Netherlands, Shariz Ahmad starred with 5-43, his first five-for in Odi cricket.
At one stage, the Netherlands were cruising towards the target of 272, with Tom Cooper (74) and M’x O’Dowd (81) going great guns. However, a run-out sent Cooper packing in the 33rd over, and Sikandar Raza accounted f’r O’Dowd in the 41st over.

Melbourne, Nov 9 (Ians) Two-time T20 World Cup-winning captain, West Indies’ Daren Sammy, says winning against smaller teams is no longer a foregone thing for the big cricket-playing nations and the ongoing tournament in Australia has brought home this point forcefully.
The legendary cricketer has also said he is mighty impressed with Zimbabwe, as despite not having a single star in the side, they proved worthy of the big stage by defeating Pakistan in the Super 12 phase of the tournament, proving that the fear factor among the smaller teams has disappeared.
“It does not matter who the teams are, there are no foregone conclusions. Even on the final day of Super 12 action, we saw South Africa needing to beat the Netherlands to reach the semifinals and falling short. Before that, Zimbabwe have got the better of Pakistan, Ireland saw off England and pretty much every team has been given a scare along the way,...

Melbourne, Nov 7 (Ians) Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar hailed the excellent batsmanship showed by middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav in the Men’s T20 World Cup, saying that he is the one who is propelling the side to totals which they can defend well.
On Sunday, Suryakumar enthralled 82,000 fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in a death overs batting masterclass of 25-ball 61 not out. He set the base for a 71-run thrashing of Zimbabwe to set up a semi-final showdown with England at Adelaide Oval on Thursday.
“He is actually turning out to be the player who is taking India to totals which you can defend. The score India got was the highest T20I score at the McG. Without his 61 not out, India would not have reached even 150. Each of those innings was pretty much 360 degrees,” said Gavaskar on India Today after the match ended.

Adelaide, Nov 6 (Ians) The Netherlands caused the biggest upset of the Icc T20 World Cup, defeating South Africa by 13 runs in their last Super 12 Group 2 game and showing the Temba Bavuma-led side the exit door at the Adelaide Oval here on Sunday.
The result means India, even if they lose their last Super 12 match to Zimbabwe later on Sunday, have secured a last-four berth after missing the spot in the 2021 edition of the tournament in the UAE.
South Africa’s loss has given both Pakistan and Bangladesh hope of securing the second semifinal sport from Group 2. The two teams, on four points each, will clash later on Sunday and the winner will enter the semifinal.
The Dutch were rejoicing after having pulled off one of the biggest upsets in the history of the Icc Men’s T20 World Cup and sending the Proteas tumbling out of semifinal contention.

Adelaide, Nov 2 (Ians) The Netherlands, riding on a fine half-century from opener Max O’Dowd defeated Zimbabwe by five wickets with two overs to spare to end the African nation’s hopes of qualifying for the semifinals in the Icc T20 World Cup at the Adelaide Oval on Wednesday.
With Craig Ervine’s side dismissed for just 117 in 19.2 overs, there was little his bowlers could do when O’Dowd (52 from 47 balls) and Tom Cooper (32 from 29 balls) gave Netherlands a fine start. Though the Dutch were already not in contention for a semifinal berth, they queered the pitch for Zimbabwe, who, had they earned two points on Wednesday, would have made things even more interesting in Group 2.
Netherlands have produced several highlights in this tournament, but their efforts against Zimbabwe came close to being a complete performance thus far. Paul van Meekeren (3/29) and fellow seamer Bas de Leede (2/13) were the pick of...

India ended up losing the game to South Africa who perched themselves on top of the Super 12 Group 2 league table displacing India after that victory.
Both Ashwin and Axar were fielded in the game against the Netherlands on October 27 at the more spin-friendly Sydney Cricket Ground and played their part in the comprehensive victory for India by 56 runs.
Left-arm spinner Axar picked up 2 for 18 after deceiving Max O’Dowd with a perfectly-directed arm ball. He later added the scalp of Bas de Leede. He sent back two out of the top-three Netherlands batters.
Off-spinner Ashwin also picked up two wickets giving away 21 runs and both his victims, two down batter Colin Ackermann and number five Tom Cooper, were taken out in the space of four balls.
Both spinners were effective in unsettling the Netherlands top order and their strikes within the first 13 overs, along with the first blow by Bhuvaneshwar Kumar,...
