ReviewTwo men are on the verge of death in this survival drama but the poor characterisation doesn't make us care enough.Sowmya RajendranFacebook/Neerali Earlier this year, we had Venu's Carbon, a survival drama about a man who goes looking for buried treasure and ends up fighting for his life. In Ajoy Varma's Neerali, two men who're transporting a box of precious gems find themselves in a precarious position, their car on the verge of falling into a ravine. The back stories of the characters in survival dramas are extremely important. Who are these people who are staring at the face of death? What choices have brought them to this position? Should we root for them to live; will we care if they die? If the film doesn't get this right, the plot doesn't quite take off, unless the methods they employ to live are so incredibly original. Neerali, unfortunately, doesn't have either going for it. The film begins with a well-choreographed accident. A vehicle crashing through the jungle and coming to a halt, one heartbeat away from doom. But this exciting premise is wasted by poor writing that shows a serious lack of imagination. Mohanlal plays Dr Sunny, a gemologist. The only other thing we know about him before he finds himself close to death is that he's popular with the ladies. Having young women salivate over ageing superstars in a bid to portray them as "dashing" is a pathetic tendency we see across film industries and Neerali follows the same pattern. There are at least two colleagues hitting on Sunny, one of whom is Naina (Parvathi Nair), who has vague "psychological" problems. Although Naina is important to the plot, the director doesn't bother developing her character beyond giving her some fancy clothes and a silly song in Mongolia. Nadia, who plays Sunny's wife Mollykutty, is reduced to a petulant child. The actor has very little to do other than complain about her aches and pains - which is sad, considering the crackling chemistry the two of them shared in Nokkethadhoorathu Kannum Nattu. Mohanlal himself ends up spouting "interesting" facts about history and life to his companion Veerappan (Suraj Venjaramoodu) while on their road trip. This is another "superstar" trap that many directors walk into, trying to make the hero sound "sophisticated" and resulting in making us wonder if he will ever talk like a normal human being. Though both the men in the car are immensely talented actors, the conversations they share almost never sound realistic. Mohanlal's styling too looks a bit off - is it the hair? Or are we yet to get used to his Odiyan makeover? Both characters have pressing reasons to survive their ordeal. However, the staging of their backstories is so unconvincing, with much of it laboriously explained rather than shown, that they don't have any effect on our emotions though the background score (Stephen Devassy) tries desperately enough. And what happens to Dileesh Pothan and gang? The director seems to have dropped them into a ravine in the plot. The most convincing portions of the film actually have to do with the animals. The cobra and particularly the monkey. Perhaps because neither of them can speak and bore us with life lessons? At any rate, the VFX work is quite impressive. We're told Sunny has vertigo but there aren't enough shots of him struggling with this as he tries to get out of the trapped car. While the camera pans to the danger below the car, it doesn't quite exploit this nugget of fact we're given. The camera doesn't make us see the problem from Sunny's eyes. This would have added more tension to the narrative but remains a missed opportunity. Neerali tries to make us believe that this survival drama is real and not like in the movies - Sunny spells this out and we also have the score from Baahubali to remind us - but much as it tries, the film cannot get past the shallow writing. This octopus (that's what the title means and poor Nasser makes a cameo just to make sure we understand this) needed a lot more depth to survive. MollywoodThe film also stars Nadia in the lead role.Digital NativeAjoy Varma, a popular film editor, has two Hindi movies - Dus Tola and Srk – to his credit as director. The editor-turned-director announced last year that he would be directing a Malayalam film with Mohanlal in the lead. The shooting of this film titled Neerali commenced in January this year and was wrapped up within a short period of time. On directing a Malayalam film for the first time, Ajoy Varma had said in an interview to the Deccan Chronicle, “I have been exposed to Malayalam films since my childhood and coincidentally most of the movies that I saw were Mohanlal films. You can even say I was raised watching his films. Since Hindi was my comfort zone, obviously Bollywood became my place of work; I became an editor and directed two films.” The director went on to add that when writer Saju Thomas approached him with the script of Neerali, he immediately decided that it would be made into a film only if Mohanlal agreed to do the lead role. The film eventually materialised and is all set for release soon. On his meeting with the star, the director recalled, “There was a certain amount of anxiety about how he would react to the story but he responded in a very positive manner. So everything proceeded smoothly.” According to Ajoy Varma, Neerali is a thriller drama with some VFX effects. Yet another factor that makes it an important film is that it will have Mohanlal and Nadia sharing screen space after three decades. Bankrolled by Santhosh T. Kuruvilla, John Thomas and Mibu Jose Nettikadan under the banner Moon Shot Entertainments, the film is scheduled for release on July 12th. MollywoodMohanlal’s first film released in 1980 and nearly four decades later, he remains Kerala’s biggest superstar. Sowmya RajendranFacebook/MohanlalMohanlal, Kerala’s superstar, turns 58 on Monday. The actor is undoubtedly the state’s king of the box office, despite the younger generation of stars steadily establishing themselves with good cinema and blockbusters. Mammootty, the actor’s contemporary, is still loved by the audiences and has a wide fanbase, much like Mohanlal. However, he has been struggling to find scripts that do more than tom-tom his star presence. Mohanlal, on the other hand, has been delivering films that vary from unapologetic action flicks to family dramas, remaining versatile and relevant. The first Mohanlal film to release was the 1980 thriller Manjil Virinja Pookkal. Mohanlal played the antagonist in the film. Nearly four decades later, his Pulimurugan became the first Malayalam film to collect Rs 100 crore at the box office. He’s also the lead in two of Malayalam cinema’s most expensive upcoming films, Mahabharatha (based on the novel Randamoozham) and Odiyan (his transformation for the film created quite a sensation online), besides playing Kunjali Marakkar in the Priyadharshan historical Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham. He will also be seen in Ajoy Varma’s thriller Neerali. For those who grew up on Mohanlal’s films from the ‘80s and '90s, the actor’s current choices may pale in comparison. The directors who cast him in their films are conscious that they have a legend among them and it shows in the script and direction. Attempts to turn him into a superhero include gravity defying action sequences and slow-mo shots, ‘punch’ dialogues and younger women shown to be fawning over him. But every once in a while, Mohanlal delivers films like Drishyam, Vismayam or Munthirivallikal Thalirkumbol which help him break out of the ‘invincible hero’ image. He does not say no to playing the ordinary man, caught in his small web of troubles, even now. As always, the character he’s playing remains important to him more than his image – a lesson the younger stars in the Malayalam film industry appear to have learnt from him. Mohanlal’s partnership with Antony Perumbavoor, who used to be his driver, has meant that he also has a strong hold over production. Aashirvad Cinemas, owned by Perumbavoor, was established in 2000 and exclusively produces Mohanlal films. Perumbavoor also co-owns the distribution company Maxlab Cinemas and Entertainments, a theatre complex called Aashirvad Cineplexx, and is the president of the Film Exhibitors United Organisation of Kerala (Feuok). His control over production has ensured that Mohanlal is the higest paid star in the Malayalam film industry. With Malayalam cinema gaining popularity in the other southern states, filmmakers outside Kerala, too, have turned to the actor. Typically, these films centre around a younger hero, with Mohanlal playing a “mass” mentor to him. His roles were similar in the Tamil film Jilla, in which he acted with Vijay, and the Telugu film Janatha Garage, starring Junior Ntr. His Malayalam film Vismayam also released in Telugu as Manamantha with a few changes to the cast. However, the Telugu version did not do as well as the Malayalam one. Villain, which had stars from other industries like Vishal, Raashi Khanna and Hansika in a bid to have a wider appeal, failed to meet expectations. Nevertheless, Mohanlal appears to be keen to continue exploring possibilities in other industries – he has recently signed a film with Tamil actor Suriya. Further, Mohanlal has kept himself open to collaborating with the younger generation of stars within his own industry. He will be acting in Prithviraj's debut directorial Lucifer and he's also playing a pivotal role in Nivin Pauly's Kayamkulam Kochunni. And it’s not just cinema. Mohanlal recently made his debut on TV with the show Lal Salam, which is centred around the actor’s career and life. Clearly, he’s looking to diversify and ensure that he remains relevant in the entertainment industry, even as he’s on the verge of entering his sixties. He also has a prominent presence on social media, doing Facebook Lives and promoting his films as well as those of others. There are many who have been quick to capitalise on the actor’s stardom. From filmmakers merely including Mohanlal references in their films to making entire films about the fandom surrounding him – Mohanlal and Suvarnapurushan – they recognise the currency he holds with audiences across generational lines. Discerning film lovers across the country have always made a beeline to the realistic films made in Kerala. However, with multiplexes playing subtitles and the Internet breaking boundaries, Malayalam cinema has a bigger audience now than ever before. Many from the outside Kerala audience are new to the Lalettan magic that has been intrinsic to the lives of Malayalis world-over. Drishyam, which was remade in several languages, is probably their first introduction to Mohanlal and why he remains unconquerable in Kerala. But ask a real Mohanlal fan and they’ll tell them that they ain't seen nothing yet. Happy birthday to Kerala’s superstar and thank you for all the memories. TeaserDirected by Ajoy Varma, 'Neerali' is expected to release in June this year.Tnm StaffSuperstar Mohanlal and evergreen actor Nadiya Moidu starrer Neerali is easily one of the much awaited Malayalam movies of the year. On Friday, actor Mohanlal released the official teaser of the film through his Facebook page. The one-minute teaser shows Mohanlal and Nadiya Moidu in the backdrop of the famous song Aayiram Kannumayi from the 1984 movie Nokkatha Doorathu Kannum Nattu. Interestingly, it was this movie, in which Mohanlal too played an important role, that marked Nadiya’s debut as an actor in the industry. 34 years after the popular film released, Mohanlal and Nadiya will be seen together again in Neerali. And the teaser perfectly brings back the nostalgia of Nokkatha Doorathu Kannum Nattu days. In the teaser, a new version of the Aayiram Kannumayi song is featured, wherein Mohanlal and Nadiya share a ‘secret’ from their 1984 film. Nadiya is seen wearing dark shades, and along with her co-star, viewers quickly gets the “dark glasses” reference. In the 1984 film, there is a popular comedy scene where Nadiya comes to meet Mohanlal at his home wearing dark glasses. Nadiya then tells Mohanlal that she was wearing a special pair of glasses brought from Philadelphia, which lets her see people naked. While the teaser begins by giving a warm feeling to viewers, the tone quickly shifts as the teaser cuts to a scene where a vehicle in which Mohanlal is traveling meets with an accident. Apart from Mohanlal and Nadiya, the teaser also features actor Suraj Venjaramoodu. According to reports, Neerali is expected to release in June this year. The film, directed by Ajoy Varma, has been written by Sajju Thomas. The makers of the film had released the first look poster of the film in February this year and subsequently the motion poster in April. The tagline of Neerali reads ‘Do or Die’.
