Ron Howard's account of David Frost's post-Watergate TV interviews isn't always faithful to fact, but then neither was Richard Nixon
Frost/Nixon (2008)
Director: Ron Howard
Entertainment grade: A–
History grade: C+
In 1974, the Watergate scandal brought down Richard Nixon's presidency in the United States. He eventually confessed his guilt to the late Sir David Frost in 1977.
Journalism
David Frost (Michael Sheen) is hosting an Australian talk show, all cheesy jokes and cheesier ties. He is gripped by the broadcast of Richard Nixon's (Frank Langella) farewell speech. Back in London, he approaches producer John Birt (Matthew Macfadyen) to pitch an interview with Nixon. Birt laughs. "Come on, don't look like that," says Frost. "Well, how do you expect me to look?" replies Birt. "I spent yesterday evening watching you interview the Bee Gees." Frost replies, earnestly: "Weren't they terrific?" Peter Morgan's delicious screenplay, adapted from his own stage play,...

There was a terrific reminder last night of the brilliant investigative and campaigning journalism of Granada TV's World In Action in the 35 years from 1963 until 1998.
ITV1 screened a 90-minute documentary showing a variety of the highlights from the series with contributions from past editors - such as Ray Fitzwalter, John Birt, Leslie Woodhead, Steve Boulton and Ian McBride - plus a former editor, Paul Greengrass, cameraman George Jesse Turner, researcher Michael Apted and Granada's ex-chairman Sir Denis Forman.
Among about the programmes they spoke about, with understandable pride, were those that helped to effect genuine changes, such as the release of the innocent Birmingham Six, the reuniting of Anwar Ditta with her three children and the exposures of John Poulson and Reginald Maudling.
As Greengrass pointed out, it was the mixture of journalism and film-making that made the programmes so popular and so successful. It is fair to say World In Action...

Tom Stoppard's modern take on Tolstoy's masterpiece dwells on the censure Anna receives from society for her adultery. Has our own society become too feebly non-judgmental?
As reimagined by Sir Tom Stoppard and Joe Wright, Anna Karenina seems less bothered about being barred from seeing her child than about being shunned by polite society. She can cope with being sent away on her young son's birthday; but dirty looks at the theatre tip her over the edge.
It's not surprising that a contemporary adaptation of Tolstoy's masterwork should be so taken with the social side of its protagonist's plight. An affront to motherhood may be regrettable, but at least it means that a dad gets depicted as doing his share of the parenting. On the other hand, the cold shoulder turned against an adulteress by St Petersburg's blue-bloods prompts understandable horror. They're stigmatising personal conduct, and nowadays that's just not on.

Ryan Giggs may face a jail term, if judges find out he lied about his marital status, in order to gain his recent gagging order against Imogen Thomas.
The Manchester United star approached the High Court about the injunction earlier this year and claimed to be happily married and a dedicated family man in order to land the order, which prevented the Big brother star from speaking about their affair.
However, it has since been revealed that the footballer conducted at least one other extra-marital affair in recent times, with his sister in law!
One senior lawyer told The Daily Star : “He’s now in a very difficult position.
“The real danger comes if he is ruled to have withheld information from the court when applying for the injunction. That could be deemed perjury.
“The UK courts have never shied away from pursuing similar prosecutions even in the most high-profile cases.

Actor Jared Harris infuriates his family by refusing to reveal upcoming plotlines for his hit TV show Mad Men.
The star's late father Richard Harris split from his mother Elizabeth in 1969 and she went on to marry former politician Jonathan Aitken in 2003.
Aitken is a huge fan of the retro U.S. series - but reveals that stepson Harris remains tight-lipped about his storylines in the show.
He tells Britain's Daily Mail, "I'd love to know what's going to happen next in the series, but Jared refuses to tell. He won't discuss any of the future plotlines. He won't even confirm there will be a new series."...
