Predicting Best Original Song at the Oscars is made more difficult by the three-stage process. In years past, many seemingly sure-fire contenders were deemed to be ineligible. Even those ditties that cleared this hurdle then have to pass muster with the 400 plus members of the music branch of the academy. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Original Song.)
To be even eligible for consideration, a tune must meet these criteria:
It must be an original song with words and music, both of which were original and written specifically for the film;
It must be the result of a creative interaction between the filmmaker(s) and the songwriter(s) who have been engaged to work directly on the film; and
There must be a clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition (not necessarily visually presented) of both lyric and melody used in the body of the movie or as...

The soundtrack for Jane Schoenbrun’s new coming-of-age horror film I Saw the TV Glow has arrived, with songs by Sloppy Jane (featuring Phoebe Bridgers), Caroline Polachek, Bartees Strange, Jay Som, and more.
First announced in February, the soundtrack and its stacked lineup comes via A24 Music, and is available on a thematically-appropriate pink opaque vinyl. Atmospheric and diverse in style, the songs allude to the film’s emotional depth, and even contribute to the world of its narrative.
In the film, Bridgers and Sloppy Jane’s Haley Dahl appear as themselves, as do Kristina Esfandiari and her band King Woman. Also appearing in the film are Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst, Justice Smith, Brigette Lundy-Paine, Conner O’Malley, and Snail Mail’s Lindsey Jordan (who contributed a bonus track to vinyl editions of the soundtrack).
Polachek’s song, “Starburned and Unkissed” dropped earlier this month as the soundtrack’s lead single.

It’s hard to imagine we’ll get a better soundtrack this year than that for Jane Schoenbruen’s I Saw the TV Glow. Bringing together yeule, Frances Quinlan, Florist, King Woman, Caroline Polachek, Bartees Strange, Jay Som, The Weather Station, L’Rain, Drab Majesty, Sloppy Jane, and more, with Twin Peaks Roadhouse-esque musical performances in the movie, the soundtrack has now arrived digitally ahead of a vinyl release in July. Meanwhile, the film continues to expand this weekend before going wide next weekend.
I said in my review, “Utterly hypnotic in rhythm from its very first scenes, we hear a haunting motif that will return: Yeule’s cover of Broken Social Scene’s “Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl” as Owen glides underneath a rainbow elementary school parachute. It’s a transfixing moment of color and sound and sets the stage as we’re whisked into this 1996-set world.

Caroline Polachek has unveiled “Starburned and Unkissed,” her original contribution to the absolutely stacked soundtrack for Jane Schoenbrun and A24’s new film, I Saw the TV Glow.
Produced by Polachek alongside A.G. Cook, “Starburned and Unkissed” is cathartic, noisy, and anthemic — the distorted electric guitar that drops in the song’s chorus is so visceral that it feels alien to the sun-soaked ecstasy of Polachek’s last album, Desire, I Want to Turn Into You. A press release notes that “Starburned and Unkissed” features prominently in the film, and the song’s grungy hue mirrors the film’s eerie, psychological horror backdrop. Stream the track below.

Seven years after the premiere of “Twin Peaks: The Return,” and the third season of David Lynch’s small-town-turned-cosmic nightmare is still reverberating for a new generation of filmmakers.
So it’s apt that Jane Schoenbrun’s “I Saw the TV Glow,” a suburban lucid dream of a movie about how the media we consume can then consume us, feels like the first film to truly capture the dread and dissonance of Lynch’s reinvention — a series that was itself a comment on how you can truly never go home again, and how rose-colored memories become warped and monstrous by the passage of time.
“I Saw the TV Glow” follows Owen (Justice Smith), a gloomy New Jersey teen obsessed with a YA TV series called “The Pink Opaque,” about two physically apart teen girls who share a psychic connection that could help them defeat a moon-faced monster called Mr. Melancholy.

“I Saw the TV Glow” director Jane Schoenbrun finally celebrated their second feature at the film’s New York City premiere on Wednesday, April 24, in partnership with Rooftop Films. But “I Saw the TV Glow” first premiered back in January at Sundance, under the banner of A24, and with Emma Stone and Dave McCary’s production company Fruit Tree.
“I sent it to [Fruit Tree] and a couple other people, and they were like, ‘Hey, we wanna work with you,'” Schoenbrun told IndieWire. “Then I got a call from Emma Stone who was like, ‘Thank you so much for your business,’ and I was like, ‘You’re welcome!'”
The visually striking film follows two teens who are obsessed with a disturbing young adult TV show that, once canceled, starts to bleed into reality for the characters. David Ehrlich wrote in IndieWire’s review that the film “marries the queer radicality...

A new film festival is on the scene. Los Angeles Festival of Movies (Lafm), co-presented by Mubi and Mezzanine, has announced the full line-up for its inaugural run, taking place April 4-7, 2024. Boasting 11 titles––including one world premiere, three 4K restorations, a featured artist talk, documentary series, and curated shorts program––screenings will take place at three recently opened venues on the east side of Los Angeles: Vidiots in Eagle Rock, 2220 Arts + Archives in Historic Filipinotown, and Now Instant Image Hall in Chinatown.
Among the lineup are some of our recent festival favorites: Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw the TV Glow, India Donaldson’s Good One, the Ross brothers’ Gasoline Rainbow, and Eduardo Williams’ The Human Surge 3. Closing the festival is the world premiere of Conner O’Malley and Danny Scharer’s Rap World.

After stellar reviews following its Sundance premiere, A24 has released the trailer for Jane Schoenbrun’s new horror film, I Saw the TV Glow.
Justice Smith stars as Owen, who strikes up a friendship with older classmate Maddy (Brigette Lundy-Paine). Maddy gets him hooked on a TV show called The Pink Opaque, which, according to Owen’s new friend, is about teen girls Tara (Lindsay Jordan) and Isabela (Helena Howard), who share a psychic connection and “help each other fight a new monster from across the county.”
While the show offers them escapism from their tumultuous adolescent lives, they soon realize that the universe from The Pink Opaque is beginning to blur with reality. Owen tries to ignore this at first, telling Maddy it’s just “a TV show,” but is forced to confront the blended worlds when Maddy disappears and the series gets canceled.

What happens when the line between reality and TV becomes a little too blurred?
For two outcast teens played by Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine in “I Saw the TV Glow,” a cult favorite horror series comes to life with haunting consequences. Writer/director Jane Schoenbrun’s A24 feature was one of IndieWire’s must-see films at Sundance 2024 and landed a coveted “A” rating from IndieWire critic David Ehrlich.
The film, which homages everything from the eerie vibes of David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks: The Return” to late-night Nickelodeon ’90s television, follows teens who “bond over their shared love of a scary television show, but the boundary between TV and reality begins to blur after it is mysteriously canceled,” per the official synopsis.
Helena Howard, Lindsey Jordan, Phoebe Bridgers, Fred Durst, Danielle Deadwyler, and Sloppy Jane round out the cast.

‘I Saw the TV Glow’ Review: Justice Smith in a Knockout Teen Drama About Art, Obsession and Identity
Self-discovery can be a painful process, ripping apart everything you thought you knew about the world and your place in it. But even more painful and terrifying is the denial of self. Looking in the mirror and turning away from the truth staring right back at you. It’s hard to understand why we do it — if we only get one life, why not live it authentically? And what happens to us when we live with parts of ourselves sealed away? What kind of life is that? How can anyone love you when you’re never really there?
Owen (Justice Smith) is a gentle, soft-spoken teen, afraid to break out of his shell. He’s been that way since he was a child, growing up with his attentive mother (Danielle Deadwyler) and distant father (Fred Durst). Though he feels drawn to his mother, quietly admiring her beauty and emotional honesty,...

Deap Vally are calling it quits, but before they break up for good, the LA-based duo has announced their final release, Sistrionix 2.0, a re-recorded version of their 2013 debut album dropping in Spring 2024 on their own Deap Vally Records. They will also celebrate the 10th anniversary of the album by playing it in full on a farewell tour.

Pussy Riot are taking Maria Alyokhina’s “Riot Days” tour to North America this fall.
Based on Alyokhina’s 2017 memoir of the same name, the “Riot Days” tour combines live music, theatre, and video as the Pussy Riot member recounts her experiences protesting with the Russian punk collective — and facing imprisonment for the group’s guerrilla tactics. The activist has taken the show across the globe in recent years and won the Woody Guthrie prize in the States for its anti-fascist politics.
Beginning November 1st in Montreal, the fall 2023 trek takes Pussy Riot — in this iteration, featuring Alyokhina, Diana Burkot, Olga Broisova, and Alina Petrova — to Toronto, Chicago, Denver, Seattle, Los Angeles, Austin, Nashville, DC, and more before wrapping up December 8th in Brooklyn. Liza Anne, Sloppy Jane, Death Valley Girls, Pinkshift, and Thick provide support on select dates.

Boygenius have been having too much fun on their North American tour — so they’re doing it again. The trio’s forthcoming fall tour will be bigger, but also much smaller. Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker will only be performing in five cities on this trek, but among that handful of venues are Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl and New York’s Madison Square Garden.
To sweeten the deal, Boygenius are bringing more friends along for the ride. Their Sept. 25 show at MGM Music Hall in Boston and Sept.
