Alejandra Santamaria has been named the new president and CEO of Southern California Public Radio, which oversees Kpcc-fm (“LAist 89.3”), LAist.com and podcast producer LAist Studios. Santamaria was most recently interim president, general manager and VP, director of sales for Univision Los Angeles. She replaces Herb Scannell, who recently retired from the job at Scpr.
Santamaria takes over Southern California Public Radio at a difficult moment for the pubcaster, which recently cut its staff by 28 people — including 21 voluntary buyouts and another seven layoffs. Scpr said the job cuts were meant to bridge the gap due to “a significant budget shortfall over the next two years in the range of $4 million to $5 million.”
Scpr said the shortfall comes due to “a decline in advertising, the end of our investment reserves, slower-than-anticipated digital monetization, and overall cost increases that have not kept pace with revenue.” The org also reduced senior leader compensation,...

If you were a kid in the 1990s and it was Saturday night, there was a good chance you were watching Snick, or Saturday Night Nickelodeon. Nickelodeon execs launched Snick in August 1992, in an effort to capture the attention of pre-teens who were otherwise at a loss for weekend-night entertainment. “We saw it both as an opportunity to program a night that was a big thing in kids’ lives and to also steal some ratings,” Herb Scannell, who was then head of programming and development for Nickelodeon, told Vanity Fair in 2017. Snick ended in 2004, but the shows that took up those two hours on Saturday night will live on in the memories of millennials everywhere. So come, take a seat on that bright orange sofa that served as the Snick mascot, and let’s relive the programming block’s glory days. The Adventures of Pete & Pete Two red-headed brothers...

Latinx-oriented digital media company Mitú has made its first strategic moves after the July layoff that cut around 30% of its staff and saw co-founder and then-president Beatriz Acevedo and then-ceo Herb Scannell step down from their posts.
Now, founding member and former CEO Roy Burstin has returned to become Mitú’s person in charge once more, and will be leading the company in a revamped strategic direction.
Along with announcing Burstin’s return, Mitú revealed it has taken in an additional $10 million in a funding round led by new investor Leap Global Partners. Previous investors including Upfront Ventures, Verizon Ventures, and Wpp also participated. To date, Mitú has taken in $52 million in funding.
New funding will primarily be used to expand Mitú’s content into more areas, build out the company’s tech platforms, and scale the retail side of its business by investing in programmatic advertising as well as physical goods,...

Mitu co-founder Roy Burstin is returning as chief executive of the Latino-focused digital media company, which has just completed a new $10 million funding round.
The struggling site, which underwent a major layoff this summer, is shifting focus as it strives for profitability.
Mitu will continue creating content for millennial and gen-z audiences, but it is taking steps to make it easier for brands reach these young Latinos. It also plans to cultivate a second source of revenue through the sale of lifestyle products.
The company said the $10 million funding round, which drew backing from new and existing investors, will enable MiTu to scale its commerce business, build out its programmatic advertising products and expand into new content areas.
Mitu is shelving the long-form content ambitions of its previous CEO, Herb Scannell, who left in a reorganization last September along with Mitú president and co-founder, Beatriz Acevedo.

Mitú, the digital media company with ambitions to project a Latino point of view across multiple platforms, laid off about one-third of its staff yesterday, as it shifts its emphasis from growth to profitability.
The restructuring also saw the departure of CEO Herb Scannell, a television industry veteran who once ran Nickelodeon and BBC Worldwide North America, and Mitú president and co-founder, Beatriz Acevedo.
Scannell, who joined Mitú as CEO last September, sketched out an aggressive plan to reach Latinos on new platforms, including on television and in theaters. But despite a compelling story — the company has grown 450% over the last four years reaches 100 million unique monthly viewers within a rapidly growing demographic of 58 million people in the U.S. — it struggled to raise money to fuel its growth ambitions.
“The problem is the market has changed, the capital markets have changed,” said Mark Suster of Mitú investor UpFront Ventures.

Major changes are coming to Mitú. The Latino-oriented digital media company has announced a round of layoffs, with co-founder and president Beatriz Acevedo and CEO Herb Scannell opting to step away from their positions and take on advisor roles at the comapny.
According to Mitú investor Mark Suster of Upfront Ventures, the media company's latest moves are a response to a difficult landscape, in which several content publishers have been forced to make tough decisions. “Mitú is doing 10s of millions in revenue and has grown rapidly over the last several years, but the market has very clearly told us — and not just us, Buzzfeed, Vice and other people — that the market values profitability over growth at all costs,” Suster told TheWrap, where the news of Mitú's changes was first reported.

The former Epix executive who was indicted in 2016 for stealing nearly $8 million from the premium cabler will learn his fate Friday when he is sentenced by a federal judge in Manhattan.
Prosecutors are seeking a prison term of four to five years for Emil Rensing, the former chief digital officer of Epix. Rensing, 44, last year pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud.

He was originally charged in April 2016 with one count of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Mitú is cutting back its staff. The digital media company, which targets a bilingual audience in the United States and across America, has opted for a round of layoffs as part of what its CEO calls "structural changes."
The exact number of layoffs hasn't been made public, though a Mitú representative told Tubefilter that fewer than ten people lost their jobs as a result of the cuts.
The layoffs arrived a little more than two months after Mitú made a major change at the top of its organization. In September, after the resignation of CEO Roy Burstein, former Nickelodeon president Herb Scannell replaced him. “Today we made some structural changes to align ourselves for future growth to serve our audience, which unfortunately resulted in some staff reductions," Scannell said with regard to Mitú's round of layoffs. Former Nickelodeon President, Vice-Chairman of MTV Networks, and CEO of Next New Networks, Herb Scannell is now the President of BBC Worldwide America. With both his traditional expertise and new media savvy, Scannell will oversee the BBC America cable channel, the company's worldwide production arm, sales and distribution, and BBC.com. Scannell's noted that his first and most important priorities on the job will be maximizing BBC America's distribution on cable and satellite providers across the country, and ushering in "made in America" programming to help diversify BBC's content offerings. What comes next could be a reinvisioning of BBC.com, at least from a content perspective. Yes, BBC's iPlayer has seen steady traffic growth in the past year, but the vast majority of those viewers come from the UK and are watching TV shows repurposed online. BBCAmerica.com, of course, caters to a Us crowd, but lacks any original...

His name was in the mix for the job for months, but I've just learned that veteran MTV Networks and Nickelodeon exec Herb Scannell is in final negotiations for the gig. The presidency of BBC Worldwide America has been vacant since March 31st when veteran TV exec Garth Ancier officially exited after 3 years. The search for his replacement began last November. As Deadline has previously reported, the dysfunction atop the BBC parent company (leadership problems, content policing, funding woes, all underscored by the ideology of the previous Labor government and soon the newly elected Conservative government) is why so many other top executives, [...]...

Obama Girl's latest crush: Scannell's startup
NEW YORK -- Obama Girl has found a new friend in Herb Scannell, whose online video startup Next New Networks has acquired BarelyPolitical.com, the site behind the viral-video hit.
BarelyPolitical was founded in June by Ben Relles and quickly rose to prominence thanks to the 2008 presidential election sendup, "I Got a Crush on Obama", which has been viewed millions of times and featured on news shows on networks from ABC to al-Jazeera. The site followed up with other politically focused music videos.
"Having BarelyPolitical as part of the group is kind of a feather in the cap," said Scannell, the CEO and co-founder of Next, which runs 14 other niche channels. "We're excited about this as a pretty big slice in the world of micronetworks."
Scannell, former vice chairman of MTV Networks and president of Nickelodeon Networks, declined comment on financial terms of the deal.
Along with the music videos, BarelyPolitical also is starting to present shorter daily videos.

Scannel CEO of Next New Networks
NEW YORK -- Former MTV Networks vice chairman Herb Scannell has resurfaced as CEO of a new-media company.
Scannell, who left amid an executive shake-up in January 2006, has been named CEO of Next New Networks, a media company launching in the next couple of months that will facilitate video, Web sites and other content for Internet-based communities.
Spark Capital, a digital media venture capital firm, will provide the company with $8 million in funding.
Scannell said each network will target a niche community online with a Web site, daily or weekly shortform original and user-generated video content and that it will be available on iPods and other mobile devices.
He said it will be launching a "bunch" of networks that would be structured under the Next New Networks umbrella the same way MTV or Nickelodeon is associated with Viacom.
"Our idea is to make a company that would make multiple networks that would be targeting communities that were robust on the Internet," Scannell said.

Panel: Cablers seek model for tech success
NEW YORK -- New technologies such as video-on-demand and wireless offer significant promise for the linear cable TV networks, but there isn't a profitable business model yet, cable executives said. "It really is changing the way we do business," NBC Universal Cable president David Zaslav said Friday at an International Radio & Television Society Foundation panel at a Times Square hotel. Zaslav and Herb Scannell, vice chairman of MTV Networks and president of its Nickelodeon Networks, said the new technologies presented an excellent opportunity for consumers to experience cable brands in new ways. "Advertisers want to be where consumers are going," Zaslav said. "There's a ton of money going to the Internet." Although broadband is becoming popular among viewers and advertisers -- at least for short-form content -- profitable VOD use has yet to materialize.
