Following a recent post by Cynthia about the results of a british survey on stereotypes of black people in films (which you can read here, though I’ve not read it yet as I suspect it doesn’t say anything I couldn’t have told them myself) and Tambay‘s post yesterday about Attack The Block, a new British film directed by Joe Cornish that’s just won the Audience Award at SXSW, and my comment on that post, I was reminded of a piece I posted on S&A last summer (around the time I first heard about Attack The Block, incidentally) about British “urban” flicks and how they seem to provide a film career leg-up for some white filmmakers on the backs of black stereotypes.

Pierce Brosnan and Amanda Seyfried are in final negotiations to star alongside Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia! Universal Pictures and Playtone's adaptation of the popular ABBA musical. Phyllida Lloyd is directing the musical, which is being produced by Playtone and Littlestar.
The story revolves around a bride-to-be and her formerly rebellious mom (Streep) who raised her on a Greek island and never disclosed the identity of her father. The bride locates three men who might be her father and invites them to her wedding. The musical features 22 ABBA songs, including "Dancing Queen", "Take a Chance on Me" and "The Winner Takes It All".
Brosnan will play the main father figure, while Seyfried has snagged the role of the bride-to-be.
Producing are Playtone's Gary Goetzman and Littlestar's Judy Craymer. Tom Hanks, Goetzman's partner at Playtone, and Rita Wilson are executive producing along with ABBA members and songwriters Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus.
