Fans of "The Wire" star and "Office" nemesis Idris Elba will get a double dose of him later this year.
Elba has taken a recurring part on Showtime's new series "The Big C," where he'll play a painter and potential love interest for Laura Linney's cancer-stricken suburbanite, Showtime says. He also stars in "Luther," a six-episode crime drama that premiered on the BBC in May and will make its way to BBC America later this year.
"The Big C," which is scheduled to premiere Aug. 16, stars Linney as a woman who decides to embrace life after being diagnosed with cancer. The show also stars Gabourey Sidibe ("Precious") and Oliver Platt as Linney's husband -- who, we're assuming, won't be all that thrilled with the presence of Elba's character in his wife's life.
In "Luther," Elba plays John Luther, a brilliant but self-destructive detective who strikes up an odd relationship (Ruth Wilson,...

txtcritic: why the f*** does Cameron Diaz Still get to sit next to DiCaprio and Scorsese?!? "Gangs of New York" was Eight f***ing years ago!
Nathaniel: Best Supporting Actress, Monique in Precious! Yes. I don't think God votes on the Golden Globes but it's nice of Mo'Nique to thank him for her good fortune anyway.
Best Actress, TV (Comedy) Toni Collette, United States of Tara.
rich: Apparently they have hired professional walkers to get actresses up the stairs.
jensen: keep the tradition of nepotism alive! Miss Golden Globes honors this great tradition.
Nathaniel: Best Supporting Actor, TV John Lithgow in Dexter. Do we think he's one of the most (over?) rewarded performers ever. How many Globes and Emmys and TONYs does he have now?
txtcritic: Do you think John Lithgow is even capable of speaking at a low or medium voice?
Nathaniel: Best Animated Feature, Up. This room is...

Can you see Mariah Carey as Vanessa Hudgens' mother?
Why not? She's 40 and Vanessa is 21. But that's not the point.
The point is whether Mariah wants to be seen as a 40-year-old mom in a new movie about a mother/daughter singing duo who audition for an "American Idol" kind of show.
It could be a little more than the Diva can handle. Carey, who received good reviews for her small role in "Precious," is reported to be considering teaming up with the "High School Musical" cutie for the flick.
And it sounds like a Dream Team. So what's the hold up?
The only sticking point seems to be whether Mariah feels comfortable playing the mom of a teenager. She's reportedly a little sensitive when it comes to her age.
She could always use Sofia Vergara's excuse. But despite the annoying maternal business, it's possible that Mariah may just succumb to the temptation.

Tina Mabry's "Mississippi Damned," an independent American production, won the Gold Hugo as the best film in the 2009 Chicago International Film Festival, and added Gold Plaques for best supporting actress (Jossie Thacker) and best screenplay (Mabry). It tells the harrowing story of three black children growing up in rural Mississippi in circumstances of violence and addiction. The film's trailer and an interview with Mabry are linked at the bottom.

The win came over a crowed field of competitors from all over the world, many of them with much larger budgets. The other big winner at the Pump Room of the Ambassador East awards ceremony Saturday evening was by veteran master Marco Bellocchio of Italy, who won the Silver Hugo as best director for "Vincere," the story of Mussolini's younger brother. Giovanna Mezzogiorno and Filippo Timi won Silver Hugos as best actress and actor,...

The Mill Valley Film Festival opens tonight, filling the next 10 days with some of the most anticipated films of the rest of the year, as well as a selection of international films making its way to the Bay Area. In addition, the festival will also host the awarding of talents such as Woody Harrelson, Clive Owen, Uma Thurman, Jason Reitman and screen legend Anna Karina.
We'll have reviews coming in for the festival soon, but for the moment, here's a brief preview of what to look for.
Clive Owen gets a spotlight for bringing his latest work, the patriarchal drama The Boys Are Back, which opens the festival tonight. Owen plays a father who has to raise his two sons on his own after his wife's sudden death. As part of the program is a screening of Owen's breakout role in the gambling thriller Croupier.
Paired with fatherhood is Motherhood,...

My comments on the film selection and the festival's new initiatives follow below. The hot links connect the reader directly to the online catalog of Toronto International Film Festival which will be September 10-17 and will screen 273 features. Last year it screened 249. 242 are world, international or North American premieres, and 71 are first features.
First off, my thanks go to the Toronto International Film Festival for the new City To City Section's selection of Tel Aviv which is celebrating its 100th birthday this year. Ten films have just been announced and there will be a public forum for filmmakers and thinkers from Tel Aviv and Toronto.
I do more than hope that we will not see the "Ken Loach experience" of Edinburgh and Melbourne repeat itself in uglier colors reminding us that September 11, 2001 happened in Toronto as it did everywhere else in the world. “The Ken Loach experience” happened when Ken Loach...

I'm pretty sure you'll have Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman is to play) Amelia Earheart (Yup, Hilary Swank!), Julia Child (Meryl Streep), Coco Chanel (Audrey Tautou) and Bruno (Sasha Baron Cohen) on your list already! On the other end of the spectrum, there's Edward Cullen (Rob Pattinson), Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) to consider, esp by the Twilight fans.

- - - But hey, if that's the list, then it seems so predictable already. How about giving those lesser-known but equally fascinating (and mostly young) characters their share of the spotlight?
So, here they are: tMF's Ten Most Fascinating Movie Characters for 2009!

# 10 - 'Columbus' - Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland) - At first, I thought Jesse Eisenberg's character, James Brennan, in Greg Mottola's Adventureland would be the better choice. But then again, when you've watched Eisenberg many times, you know he's awesome in comedy,...
