Madrid (Spain), Aug 17 (Ians) The second round of matches in the new La Liga season gets underway with two matches on Friday, with Mallorca at home to Villarreal and newly-promoted Las Palmas visiting Valencia’s Mestalla Stadium.
Villarreal’s poor pre-season form carried on into their opening game as they lost 2-1 to Real Betis. Quique Setien’s side is clearly missing players such as Samuel Chukwueze and Nicolas Jackson, whose sale has robbed them of pace and goals in attack.
Valencia have the youngest squad in La Liga after another summer without new signings, and coach Ruben Baraja has to make do with youngsters, reports Xinhua.
Valencia kicked off with a win against Sevilla last weekend, and although the Mestalla fans are likely to vent their anger at club owner Peter Lim once again, three more points would give Baraja’s men a good cushion ahead of what could be a difficult campaign.

Madrid, Aug 14 (Ians) Fc Barcelona were held to a goalless draw by Getafe in their La Liga debut on Sunday evening.
Both sides finished with 10 players, after Raphinha’s dismissal for elbowing Getafe defender Gaston Alvarez in the first half, while Getafe’s Jaime Mata received a red card after the interval, reports Xinhua.
Barca’s coach, Xavi Hernandez, was also shown the red card due to his apparent discontent with Getafe’s fouling and time-wasting tactics. This frustration was evident as the referee added a whopping 10 minutes of added time in the first half and over 15 in the second. That period culminated with Var dismissing what seemed a valid Barcelona penalty appeal.

Madrid (Spain), Aug 13 (Ians) Real Madrid’s Brazil international defender Eder Militao will miss the rest of the season after the club confirmed that the player ruptured his left cruciate ligament in Saturday’s La Liga opener against Athletic Bilbao.
The club confirmed the news on Sunday in a brief statement on their official website, which states: “Following tests carried out on our player Eder Militao, he has been diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.”
The 25-year-old suffered the injury in the 50th minute of his side’s 2-0 win away to Athletic, which came thanks to first-half goals from Rodrygo and Jude Bellingham. Militao slipped and fell badly while challenging Athletics’ Oihan Sancet for the ball, and immediately called for medical attention.

Madrid, Aug 13 (Ians) Real Madrid began their season with a 2-0 win away to Athletic Bilbao but lost defender Eder Militao to what looks like a serious knee injury, just two days after Thibaut Courtois was ruled out for the season with a torn cruciate knee ligament.
Andriy Lunin was in goal for Courtois but had little work to do in a tight first half, which tilted Madrid’s way after first Rodrygo and then Jude Bellingham took advantage of some poor defending from the home side, reports Xinhua.
Rodrygo was given space to fire Madrid ahead in the 27th minute and nine minutes later Bellingham was able to celebrate his league debut with a goal after he was left unmarked at a corner.
The midfielder mishit his shot but had the fortune to see it bounce up and over Athletic keeper Unai Simon.

Rio De Janeiro, May 29 (Ians) Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton is among five uncapped players in Brazil’s squad for friendlies against Guinea and Senegal, the Brazilian Football Confederation (Cbf) said.
The 26-year-old has been a revelation for Newcastle this season as the club finished fourth in the Premier League to secure a place in the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League. His Magpies teammate, Bruno Guimaraes, was also included in the 23-man squad, reports Xinhua.
Other newcomers are Monaco right-back Vanderson, Fluminense central defender Nino, Zenit Saint-Petersburg forward Malcom and Flamengo full-back Ayrton Lucas.
Brazil will meet Guinea in Barcelona on June 17 and Senegal in Lisbon three days later.
The five-time world champions will again be managed by national under-20 team boss Ramon Menezes as the Cbf continues to seek a permanent head coach.
Menezes was named interim manager in January following the departure of Tite after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Madrid, May 14 (Ians) Fc Barcelona will be La Liga champions on Sunday night if they win away to local rivals Espanyol although Real Madrid beat Getafe 1-0 on Saturday night.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti rang the changes ahead of his side’s Champions League semifinal return leg away to Manchester City next week, with Thibaut Courtois, Fede Valverde, Eder Militao and Eduardo Camavinga expected to start in the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.
The result was a dull game against the side third from bottom of La Liga, which was decided by a shot from Marco Asensio, who again proved his value. The bad news for Madrid was a possible injury to Camavinga in the closing minutes, which makes him a doubt for next week’s key game, a Xinhua report said.

Manchester City made six changes from the side that beat Leeds United at the weekend, while Real Madrid’s only changes from the team that won the final of the Copa del Rey were to bring in Luka Modric for Aurelian Tchouameni and Antonio Rudiger for the suspended Eder Militao.
Man City kicked off by dominating the ball, pressing high and winning possession high up the field, and Thibaut Courtois was called into action to save from De Bruyne in the eighth minute.

Madrid, May 3 (Ians) Fc Barcelona are just one win away from securing this season’s La Liga title after their hard-fought 1-0 win at home against 10-man Osasuna and Real Madrid’s 2-0 defeat away to Real Sociedad on Tuesday night.
The results leave Barca 14 points clear of Real Madrid, who could drop to third place if Atletico Madrid beat Cadiz on Wednesday, and a win away against neighbors Espanyol on May 14 would make it impossible for either of the Madrid sides to catch them.
Jordi Alba’s sliced finish five minutes from time after a clever headed pass from Frenkie de Jong gave Barca the win, a Xinhua report said.
Osasuna made several changes to their usual starting 11 ahead of next Saturday’s Copa del Rey final, with central defender Jorge Herrando making his first team debut.

Madrid, April 26 (Ians) Valentin Castellano had a night he will never forget as he scored four goals in Girona’s 4-2 humiliation of Real Madrid in La Liga.
The striker put Girona ahead with a powerful header in the 12th minute, after a fine cross from Miguel Gutierrez, whom Madrid sold to the Catalan club in the summer, reports Xinhua.
His second goal came 12 minutes later after he beat Eder Militao to a long ball and fired past Andriy Lunin, who played in goal for Madrid after Thibaut Courtois was affected by a stomach bug.
Vinicius Jr pulled a goal back for Real Madrid, which was at close to full strength, in the 34th minute, but Castellanos completed his hat-trick early in the second half after a cross from Ivan Martin, and he netted his fourth of the game in the 62nd minute with another unstoppable header.

Madrid, April 19 (Ians) Real Madrid cruised into the semifinals of the Champions League on Tuesday night, with a 2-0 win away to Chelsea giving them a 4-0 aggregate against their rivals.
While the defeat merely served to confirm the chaos of Chelsea’s current season and the huge rebuilding that lies ahead, it also highlights Real Madrid’s dominance in the Champions League, where they have reached the last-four in 11 of the past 13 seasons.
However, it was not all good news on Tuesday night, with Madrid possibly losing two key players for the semifinal, which will be against the winner of Wednesday’s return leg between Bayern Munich and Manchester City (where the English club defended a 3-0 first leg lead).
Key central defender Eder Militao was booked in the 21st minute of the game and that means he is suspended for the first leg of the semifinal. Militao has...

Madrid, April 4 (Ians) Fc Barcelona and Real Madrid meet for the fifth (and final) time this season when they play the return leg of their Copa del Rey semi final on Wednesday night.
After losing 3-1 to Real Madrid in their first meeting of the campaign, Barca have won the last three clashes between the two sides, beating Real Madrid 3-1 in the Spanish Supercup, winning the first leg of the semifinal 1-0 with a defensive display in the Santiago Bernabeu in early March and then beating their eternal rivals 2-1 in their second La Liga meeting in the Camp Nou, two and a half weeks ago.
Although Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti continues to insist that he is relaxed about his future, the Italian must know that very few Madrid coaches who lose four times to Barca in a single campaign are likely to hold on to their jobs.

Madrid, March March 13 (Ians) Fc Barcelona take a nine-point lead over Real Madrid into next weekend’s El Clasico in the Camp Nou after a hard-fought and controversial 1-0 win away to Athletic Bilbao.
Raphinha’s diagonal shot in first-half injury time was enough to give Barca the points in a game where Raul Garcia and Alex Berenguer hit the woodwork for the home side, reports Xinhua.
Athletic thought they had scored a deserved equalizer through Inaki Williams in the 86th minute, but Var ruled the goal out for a supposed handball when Iker Muniain had won the ball in midfield – although the images seemed to show the ball had hit his shoulder.
Real Madrid warmed up for El Clasico with a relatively comfortable 3-1 win at home to Espanyol on Saturday.
Although Joselu put Espanyol ahead in the eighth minute, Vinicius Jr and Eder Militao turned the game around before halftime.

Madrid, March 3 (Ians) Fc Barcelona produced a rock-solid and very untypical defensive display to beat Real Madrid 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semifinal.
Real Madrid dominated the ball and had Barca pinned back for much of the game, with Frenkie de Jong, Ronald Araujo and Jules Kounde all outstanding; Madrid barely produced a save from Marc Andre Ter Stegen all game.
Without Robert Lewandowski, Pedri and Ousmane Dembele, Barca opted for a pragmatic approach, with Franck Kessie in the starting 11 and Raphinha and Ferran Torres carrying the visitors’ attack.

Madrid, Feb 22 (Ians) Real Madrid’s impressive win away to Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday night has come with a price ahead of their La Liga derby at home to Atletico Madrid this weekend.

Madrid (Spain), Feb 3 (Ians) Real Madrid are facing an increasing injury crisis as their season continues without let-up.
Central defender Eder Militao and striker Karim Benzema both had to limp out of their 2-0 win at home to Valencia on Thursday night.
Militao, who has been in excellent form in recent weeks, went off in the first half, with what looked like a problem with his right abductor muscle, while Benzema asked to be changed after an hour of the game with another muscle issue.
“This is what happens when you play every three days. There is no time to recover,” lamented Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti after the game.
Real Madrid are already without their only left back Ferland Mendy for around six weeks with a muscle injury, while Lucas Vazquez is sidelined with a twisted ankle he suffered in the Spanish Supercup and will be out for another month.

Madrid, Dec 29 (Ians) The Spanish La Liga returns to action on Thursday after a six-week break for the FIFA World Cup. Here are some things to look out for in the coming days.
1. How will Barca do after World Cup efforts?
No club provided more players to the World Cup than Barcelona, who had 17 players in Qatar, with Ousmane Dembele and Jules Kounde playing in the final with France. While most teams were able to enjoy a mid-season break, most of Barca’s squad were hard at work and the lack of first-team members in Spain also complicated Xavi Hernandez’s job of organising training sessions.
The effects of tiredness may not be felt straight away as Barca visit local rivals Espanyol, but they could affect Barca’s form in the coming months.

Rio de Janeiro, Nov 8 (Ians) Brazil manager Tite has named 39-year-old defender Dani Alves in his squad for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the South American country’s football confederation said on Monday.
The 26-man list also includes Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar, Real Madrid attackers Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, and veteran Chelsea center-back Thiago Silva.
But there was no place for Aston Villa midfielder Philippe Coutinho, who was left out after suffering a thigh injury while training last week. Also missing was Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino, despite his impressive start to the season for the Premier League club, Xinhua reports.
Tite called up 12 Premier League players, including Manchester United’s Casemiro, Antony and Fred, and Arsenal duo Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli.
Alves’ inclusion comes despite having played just 12 games for Mexican club Pumas this season and the fact he is just six months shy of his 40th birthday.

Madrid, Oct 10 (Ians) Fc Barcelona had to withstand a second half fightback at home to Celta Vigo to cling on for a narrow 1-0 win in the Camp Nou on Sunday in the eighth round match of La Liga.
Barca controlled the first half completely, with Gavi and Pedro running the midfield, and it was no surprise when Gavi set Pedro up to score from close range in the 17th minute.
Everything changed after the break, with Celta seeing a goal ruled out for a close offside, while Marc-Andre ter Stegen produced two excellent saves to deny Iago Aspas and Oscar.
Barca will have to improve considerably if they are to beat Inter Milan in the Champions League ahead of next weekend’s El Clasico against Real Madrid, reports Xinhua.

Madrid, Oct 9 (Ians) Real Madrid returned to the top of La Liga on Saturday night thanks to a narrow 1-0 win away to Getafe. Eder Militao’s header from a corner in the third minute of the game was enough to give Carlo Ancelotti’s side all three points ahead of Fc Barcelona’s home match against Celta Vigo on Sunday night.
The Var overturned a decision to award Real Madrid a penalty for a supposed foul on Vinicius Jr and ruled out a ‘goal’ from Rodrygo.
The arrival of coach Jorge Sampaoli as the replacement for Julen Lopetegui looked as if it would bring an immediate result for Sevilla as Oliver Torres opened the scoring in the third minute of their 1-1 draw at home to Athletic Club Bilbao, reports Xinhua.

Madrid (Spain), Oct 1 (Ians) Real Madrid will look to maintain their perfect start to the season when they play Osasuna in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Sunday.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side go into the game with six wins from six in La Liga and with two wins from their two Champions League games, ahead of a fortnight that could see them assure their place in the knockout stage of the tournament with two matches against Shakhtar Donetsk, before playing Fc Barcelona in the first ‘Clasico’ of the season.
With the first of those games against Shakhtar on Wednesday, Ancelotti may be tempted to rest some first-team regulars, especially those who have returned from international duty, although injuries to Lucas Vazquez and Luka Modric slightly limit his options.
Karim Benzema is fit to play after a muscle injury sidelined him for a month, although Ancelotti may prefer to re-introduce the Frenchman slowly back into the action,...

Madrid (Spain), Sep 13 (Ians) Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti will continue his policy of squad rotations for Wednesday’s Champions League tie at home to Rb Leipzig.
Last week’s 3-0 win away to Celtic got Real Madrid’s title defense off to a perfect start and they are clear favourites against a side that kicked off their European campaign with a 4-1 defeat at home to Shakhtar Donetsk.
That defeat saw coach, Domenico Tedesco, sacked and replaced by Marcos Rose in the Rb Leipzig dugout and Rose began his time in charge with a 3-0 win at home to Borussia Dortmund.
Real Madrid are without Eder Militao, Karim Benzema and Lucas Vazquez for Wednesday, but Ancelotti will be able to bring Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, Luka Modric and Dani Carvajal into his side to freshen things up.
Meanwhile, Eden Hazard or Marco Asensio will probably cover for Benzema, although...

Rio de Janeiro, Sep 10 (Ians) Brazil manager Tite has named uncapped central defenders Gleison Bremer and Roger Ibanez in his squad for friendlies against Ghana and Tunisia later this month.
Bremer has been in impressive form for Juventus since his July move from Torino while Ibanez has flourished at Roma under the guidance of manager Jose Mourinho.
“They’ve been schooled the Italian way under (Juventus manager Massimiliano) Allegri and Mourinho,” Tite told a news conference on Friday, reports Xinhua. “Both coaches are very demanding defensively.”
As expected, Tite also included Paris Saint-Germain pair Neymar and Marquinhos as well as Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo and Eder Militao in his 26-man squad.
But there was no place for Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli or Gabriel Magalhaes. Also absent were Aston Villa midfielder Philippe Coutinho and veteran Pumas Unam right-back Dani Alves.

Madrid, Sep 7 (Ians) Real Madrid faces an anxious wait over the fitness of striker Karim Benzema after he was forced to limp out of their Champions League win away to Glasgow Celtic with a knee injury on Tuesday.
The striker, who had scored 44 goals in all competitions last season and was the top scorer in last season’s Champions League, collided with one of the Celtic players and was unable to carry on, reports Xinhua.
Speaking after the match, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said he was optimistic about Benzema and Eder Militao, who was also forced off with a knock.
“After a first evaluation, it doesn’t seem to be serious. But we will have to wait until they undergo tests. They both could have problems,” said Ancelotti.
The tests will be carried out in the coming days, but Benzema has to be considered a doubt for at least...

Madrid, Aug 29 (Ians) Captain Karim Benzema scored twice in a wild finish as Real Madrid won 3-1 at Espanyol to preserve their 100 per cent record after three games of the La Liga season.
Vinicius Junior’s tidy finish was cancelled out by a goal from Joselu, who has made a habit of scoring against Madrid since spending three years early in his career with the capital club’s ‘Castilla’ B team, reports Dpa.
Benzema had a goal ruled out after the break, while Joselu almost pinched another, before Benzema turned in a cross from Rodrygo to snatch the points. Espanyol goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte was sent off in stoppage time and Benzema added his second from the subsequent free-kick as the game ended chaotically.
The result means Madrid move level on nine points with Real Betis, the next opponents for Carlo Ancelotti’s team and the only other side with a perfect record.

Madrid, May 18 (Ians) Real Madrid will be without German midfielder Toni Kroos for the decisive last game of the season after the club confirmed on Monday that he has tested positive for Covid-19.
Kroos had been isolated at home since Friday after a close contact had tested positive for the virus and missed Sunday's 1-0 win away to Athletic Club Bilbao and he will now also have to sit out Saturday's home match against Villarreal, Xinhua reports.
Real Madrid need to beat Villarreal and hope that Atletico Madrid fail to win in their visit to relegation-threatened Valladolid in a game that will be played at the same time, to be crowned this season's La Liga champions.
The German is the ninth member of the Real Madrid first-team squad to test positive for Covid-19 this season, following Eder Militao, Casemiro, Nacho Fernandez, Raphael Varane, Sergio Ramos, Fede Valverde, and Luka Jovic,...

Madrid, Feb 23 (Ians) Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has not included striker Karim Benzema in the 19-man squad for his side's vital Champions League last 16 tie away to Atalanta on Wednesday night.
The striker, who has netted 17 goals in all competitions this season, has still not recovered from a slight tear in his left abductor muscle, which kept him out of Real Madrid's narrow 1-0 win away to Valladolid on Saturday.
He was replaced by Mariano Diaz at the weekend and the 27-year-old looks likely to lead the Real Madrid line again on Wednesday night, Xinhua news agency reports.
Benzema isn't the only player Zidane will be missing on Wednesday with club captain Sergio Ramos still sidelined after undergoing minor knee surgery, while the absence of Dani Carvajal and Alvaro Odriozola will also miss out along with central defender Eder Militao, Rodrygo, Fede Valverde and Eden Hazard.

Madrid, Feb 1 (Ians) Atletico Madrid extended their lead at the top of Laliga to 10 points in the 21st round of matches last weekend after a 4-2 win in Cadiz.
On Sunday, Luis Suarez opened the scoring with a free kick in the 28th minute only for Alvaro Negredo to equalise shortly thereafter, reports Xinhua news agency.
Saul's curling effort put Atletico ahead on the stroke of halftime. Cadiz would feel aggrieved as referee Gil Manzano didn't award them a penalty before the break after a clear handball from Koke.
Suarez put Atletico 3-1 ahead from the penalty spot after a clumsy tackle on Thomas Lemar, only for Negredo's scuffed shot to give Cadiz hope with 20 minutes left to play. Cadiz pressed hard for an equalizer in the closing minutes but Koke tapped home to seal the 4-2 win.

Madrid, Jan 31 (Ians) Real Madrid's slim chances of winning the Laliga title this season took a heavy blow as they were beaten 1-2 at home by Levante in their latest encounter.
Saturday's result leaves Real Madrid seven points behind league leaders Atletico Madrid, who have two games in hand and just a point ahead of Sevilla, who won away to Eibar earlier in the day, reports Xinhua news agency.
Madrid kicked off with coach Zinedine Zidane at home due to coronavirus along with defender Nacho Fernandez, while Sergio Ramos, Dani Carvajal, and Lucas Vazquez all missed out through injury.
Madrid's already makeshift defense was further weakened after just seven minutes when Eder Militao was sent off after a foul on Levante striker Sergio Leon which stopped a clear goalscoring opportunity. The referee first gave a yellow card but changed it to red after consulting with the Var.
