All season long, Gold Derby readers have been making their predictions for who they think will take home the 1 million grand prize on “Survivor 43.” With just hours left to go before the season finale airs December 14 on CBS, the overwhelming favorite to win is Jesse Lopez. This 30-year-old survey methodologist from North Carolina was solely responsible for ousting his biggest threat, Cody Assenmacher, during the penultimate episode. Jesse also holds a secret immunity idol that should theoretically bring him to the Final 4, at which case he’d truly be vulnerable for the first time ever.
Here are Gold Derby’s current “Survivor 43” winner predictions for the Top 5:
1. Jesse Lopez — 23/50 odds
2. Karla Cruz Godoy — 8/1 odds
3. Cassidy Clark — 10/1 odds
4. Owen Knight — 12/1 odds
5. Mike Gabler — 28/1 odds

With only two weeks and six players left in “Survivor 43,” it’s time we dole out our final power rankings of the season. Left in the game are Karla Cruz Godoy and Cassidy Clark from original Coco, Jesse Lopez and Cody Assenmacher from original Vesi, and Owen Knight and Mike Gabler from original Baka. One of these six will be named “sole Survivor” on the season finale airing Wednesday, December 14.
In an era of “Survivor” where Jeff Probst has added more advantages into the game than ever, it’s hard to not take the extra powers into account when analyzing a player’s potential to win. Last season, Maryanne Oketch argued in her final tribal council speech that she kept a hidden immunity idol secret from everyone and was so well positioned in the game that she never had to use it. She won. Three idols are still floating around in the game,...

Following the trajectory of seasons 41 and 42, “Survivor 43” enters the home stretch of the game this Wednesday when the final 11 players will begin voting each other out and onto the jury. Only three players will sit in the final seats at the last tribal council, meaning eight others will take their place on the jury that decides the winner. This stage of the game is defined by individual immunity, trust in what alliance you’ve built, who plays what advantage when, and padding your résumé with jury-impressing moves.

When Jeff Probst asked the 12 remaining players of CBS’s “Survivor 43” whether or not original tribal lines were still a thing, Dwight Moore explained that they’re “all representing ourselves at this point in the game and there’s no more indication of Vesi, Baka, Coco here.” He said, “That was in the past, let’s move forward as individuals and play our own games” minutes before seven people joined in a majority to vote him out in episode 7. Read his “Survivor 43” exit interview below.
Despite what Dwight told Jeff, he was part of a plan that Noelle Lambert was championing to keep Vesi and Baka together as a “four and four” majority of eight to vote out the Coco members. During the sixth episode of “Survivor 43,” viewers saw how the Coco and Vesi tribes reacted to their tree mail messages telling them to “drop your buffs.” But what about Baka? CBS has now released a secret scene in which Mike “Gabler” Gabler, Owen Knight, Sami Layadi, Elisabeth “Elie” Scott and Jeanine Zheng read their parchment and react in understandable confusion. In fact, Gabler even asks what everyone at home was wondering: “Did we make the merge?” Watch the “Survivor 43” deleted scene video above.

The sixth episode of “Survivor 43” aired on Wednesday night and concluded with host Jeff Probst snuffing out the torch of Elisabeth “Elie” Scott. The 31-year old from Salt Lake City, Utah was the sixth castaway sent home after being voted on Day 13. Did the tribe make the right decision by voting out Elie? While Jeanine Zheng was left stunned by the elimination of her closest ally Elisabeth “Elie” Scott on Wednesday’s sixth episode of “Survivor,” Elie was in good spirits, exclaiming, “They got me!” Read her “Survivor 43” exit interview below.
As a confident and strategic player from the jump, Elie fully admitted that it wasn’t dumb for the newly merged players to vote her out. She said, “I think it was a good move on them — I had a lot more game left to play.” Out of the gate at the merge, Elie had more intel than many of the other players, already knowing who at her former Baka camp had the advantages and fiercely aligned with the Baka idol holder, Jeanine. She also learned through conversation with Noelle Lambert that Cody Assenmacher likely had the idol from Vesi.

Merge, baby. Merge! After Geo’s elimination last week, it was time to bring Baka, Coco, and Vesi together as one. The annual merge was announced quickly in the beginning of Survivor Season 43 Episode 6 on October 26, and the squabbling tribes were all smiles meeting their one big team. But there was apprehension behind the grins. With no official merge buffs, the players knew a twist was coming. While they waited for an update some gleefully shared their advantage intel with select players. Here’s the roundup of idols and advantages, plus those without a vote heading into the merge: Gabler: Idol for One Tribal Noelle: Steal-a-Vote Jeanine: Hidden Immunity Idol, No Vote Jesse: No Vote Karla: Hidden Immunity Idol Noelle trusted Owen with her Steal-a-Vote secret, and then inadvertently revealed to Elie that Cody had the bracelet immunity idol at Vesi. Is she too quick to trust people, or could...

Drop your buffs… it’s time to merge! Well, sort of.
With only five players ousted from Survivor 43 thus far, it feels a bit early for the three tribes to unite as one, which means something is definitely afoot! While host-master general Jeff Probst has already confirmed that the Hourglass of Doom (a.k.a., one of the show’s worst twists ever) has gotten canned (at least for now), the players were still forced to “earn the merge” on Wednesday’s episode.

Following last week’s elimination of Geo Bustamante from “Survivor 43,” only 13 players remained in the running to win the 1 million grand prize — five on Baka, four on Coco, four on Vesi. However, at the start of Wednesday’s sixth episode, the game was shaken up by the promise of a merge. After all the dust had settled, who ended up having their torch snuffed by Jeff Probst at tribal council?

After the shocking blindside of Geo Bustamante on the fifth episode of “Survivor 43,” viewers were blindsided themselves when the “Next time on Survivor” promo showed all three tribes coming together on the same beach and what looked like an upcoming challenge for a potential “merge.” It’s an odd and early turn of events since only five contestants have been eliminated, but fans can remember from watching the last two seasons that making the merge will not come easy to the players as they will likely have to earn their way to it by surviving at least a vote. With Season 43 no longer having the controversial hourglass twist and promising another game-changing twist to making the merge, it will be interesting to see what events will occur in the sixth episode. But now that the players have all come together, let’s break down the three tribes and the odds...

As we head into merge territory on “Survivor 43,” the tribal alliances formed at the three original beaches will face their biggest test of the game. Who in these first alliances will hold tight to their word and which players will jump ship and form new bonds with people they’re playing with for the first time? Below we dive deep into everyone’s game so far for our first power rankings of the players. Check out our thoughts and then sound off in the comments below.
To assess where each of them stands going into the merge, we’re taking a quick look at where they’re at in their current tribe after Episode 5 and the likelihood that they stick to the plan or go rogue, and then contemplate what their chances will be for surviving to the end of the game. Read on for our “Survivor 43” power rankings.

It’s “Drop your buffs” time on “Survivor 43,” aka the merge, and in CBS’s newly released sneak peek video (watch above), the Coco tribe reacts to the news after reading it via tree-mail. While the entire tribe celebrates what the future may hold, Karla Cruz Godoy remains (smartly) skeptical. She tells the camera, “While it’s exciting, yes, oh my god, the merge is coming … it’s ‘Survivor,’ right? And for the last two seasons we’ve seen that the merge doesn’t come easy.”
What she’s referring to is that during “Survivor 41” and “Survivor 42,” the castaways had to earn their way into the merge for the first time ever. First, they drew random colored rocks and one person with a grey rock had to go to Exile Island and live alone. Then, the remaining players competed in a challenge where the winners would earn a merge...

The fifth episode of “Survivor 43” aired on Wednesday night and concluded with host Jeff Probst snuffing out the torch of Geo Bustamante. The 36-year old from Honolulu, Hawaii was the fifth castaway sent home after being voted out by the Coco tribe on Day 11. Did the tribe make the right decision by voting out Geo? [Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Survivor Season 43 Episode 5, “Stop With All the Niceness.”] It’s hard to recall a recent tribe more ill-fitted to get along than Survivor 43’s Baka. Working well as a group in the challenges and having ample survival gear doesn’t seem to phase this group of five. They simply do not like each other. Their splitting hairs were made more clear at the top of Survivor Season 43 Episode 5, which saw Jeanine finding the bracelet-themed Beware Advantage early on. Unlike Vesi’s Cody, who only let two teammates know about his bracelet task, and Coco’s Karla, who told no one, Jeanine’s secret was known by all within minutes. She found it while hunting with ally Elie, who had a major snafu when Owen arrived right as she said “let’s not tell Owen.” He heard, they spilled, and then Jeanine told Sami, but Sami is no fan of the women.

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen gameplay that bad.
I realize this is very much not a Big Brother recap (thankfully), but remember in Season 13 when Lawan Exum said he was Ok with being evicted because he thought he was going to re-enter the game (?) with a superpower (?!). That was the first thing that came to mind while watching Wednesday’s Survivor as Ryan rattled on and on about his grand plan of sabotaging the immunity challenge so Coco could oust Cassidy. And in a surprise to absolutely no one in the Survivor fandom, Cassidy did not go home.

It wasn’t the first time a player’s own neuroses sunk his or her game, and it surely won’t be the last.
On Wednesday’s episode of Survivor, we could see that vote coming a mile away. It was a train wreck we couldn’t turn away from, and at the end of the hour, Lindsay Carmine might as well have written her own name down at Tribal Council. It was a master class in “How to Turn Your Alliance Against You,” taught to players and viewers alike in 15 minutes or less.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Survivor Season 43 Episode 4, “Show No Mercy”.] After Nneka’s elimination, Vesi’s Cody laid things out plain at the top of Survivor 43’s fourth episode: “We have no flint, no food, no fire, and we’ve lost two challenges in a row. We are in dead last.” It’s true that Vesi has not fared well in the game thus far. Eight days in, and they’re still struggling to get fire made. What the team does have that Baka doesn’t, however, is a general appreciation for its teammates. Robert Voets/CBS Baka’s beach chatter proves that last week’s victorious tribe may be good at group challenges, but they are not bonding. “Gabler’s starting to rub me the wrong way,” Elie says of her eldest teammate on Day 8. “He’s becoming a detriment to potentially our game, but also to our camp life as well.” His crime?...

During the third episode of “Survivor 43,” Baka won the combined immunity and reward challenge, but viewers didn’t see their reactions when they returned to camp to enjoy their fruits and tools. Until now. In the latest “Survivor 43” deleted scene (watch above), Jeanine Zheng, Elisabeth “Elie” Scott, Mike “Gabler” Gabler and Sami Layadi bond together as they salivate over their bananas, papayas, grapes, etc. Note that the fifth tribe member, Owen Knight, isn’t featured as he was embarking on his summit journey on another island.
The previously unseen moment takes place on Day 7 at the Baka beach, immediately after they won the challenge. Coco came in second place, which meant they also took home smaller baskets of fruits and tools. Vesi placed last, so they had to go to tribal council where they voted out Nneka Ejere.

Nneka Ejere‘s game of personal connection and loyalty came to an emotional end on Wednesday’s third episode of “Survivor 43.” Despite being blindsided in “a really cool” way by her alliance, the 43-year-old remains positive leaving the island, saying, “I’m surprised I don’t have any negative emotions.” Read her “Survivor 43” exit interview below.
On last week’s second episode, Nneka was on the right side of the vote when her Vesi tribe attended their first Tribal Council. She, Cody Assenmacher and Jesse Lopez joined in a three vote majority over Noelle Lambert and Dwight Moore to take out their ally Justine Brennan. When Vesi lost the immunity challenge again this week, Cody, Jesse and Nneka were seemingly in the power position to have an easy majority over Noelle and Dwight. Their sights were set on Noelle based on Jesse and Nneka having a more trustworthy connection to Dwight.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Survivor Season 43 Episode 3, “I’ll Sign the Divorce Papers.”] Trust is broken at Vesi after last week’s Tribal Council. Cody’s idol twist — completed with an assist from Nneka — sent Justine packing, leaving Noelle without her original alliance and Dwight and Jesse’s “island marriage” in the doghouse. Vesi wasn’t the only tribe splintering quickly at the top of Survivor Season 43 Episode 3, which aired Wednesday, October 5 on CBS. Baka didn’t have to send a player home last week, but not-so-secret scheming deepened the divide between the men and women of the group. Psychologist Elie and Ux designer Jeanine were convinced Gabler didn’t know his idol was still in play, telling Sami their plan to convince him not to play it. The arrogance peeved Sami, he spilled the tea to Gabler, and Gabler played along with Elie’s attempted manipulation later. All the while, Owen kept his...

Following the first two “Survivor 43” eliminations of Morriah Young from Baka and Justine Brennan from Vesi, Coco was at an obvious numbers advantage as they still had their original six tribe members. Heading into the third episode, winning was imperative for the blue team so they could keep their numbers intact. So which tribe won the third immunity challenge, and which castaway ended up having their torch snuffed by Jeff Probst?

Have we reached Peak Puzzling on Survivor these days? Is watching a puzzle showdown as exciting as the show believes it is? If every single immunity challenge is decided the same way, I would argue that no, it is not.
Once again, Wednesday’s episode aaaall came down to a puzzle, as Nneka and Jesse failed to secure the immunity idol for their tribe after botching an ol’ fish jigsaw. (I’ve already typed the word “puzzle” so much that I’ve annoyed myself.)

After being voted out of the second episode of “Survivor 43,” Justine Brennan was all smiles during her end-of-show exit interview on CBS. “I got completely hoodwinked by Jesse,” sighed the 29-year-old cyber security saleswoman from Marina Del Rey, California. She added that it “sucks” to be eliminated so soon, especially because of someone who was “very visibly playing both sides.”
Justine was referring to Jesse Lopez, who found himself as the swing vote between two other pairs on the red Vesi tribe. Ultimately he decided to write down Justine’s name because he really never bonded with her. As an example, viewers saw a hilarious scene of Jesse being annoyed at her fear of spiders, and another moment where Justine bragged about having a “good lying face.”

“I feel sad about leaving this family,” Justine declared. Despite the early elimination, she confirmed that she’s “still rooting for Vesi.

After the elimination of Morriah Young from “Survivor 43,” the Baka tribe was at a noticeable numbers disadvantage compared to their competition. Thus, they went into the second episode with success on their minds, because another immunity loss would drop them to four tribe members, compared to six each for Coco and Vesi. So who won the second immunity challenge, and which castaway ended up having their torch snuffed by Jeff Probst?

A note to future Survivor players: If you already have a date with Jeff at Tribal Council, opening a Beware Advantage probably isn’t in your best interests.
Cody learned that lesson the hard way in Wednesday’s episode when the salesman from Hawai’i tore through the advantage’s wrapping like a six-year-old on Christmas morning, despite his tribe having lost immunity. And of course he lost his vote! That’s what Beware Advantages do! They are vote-stealing, wrench-throwing little buggers that are put in place to foil your game. [Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the Survivor Season 43 two-hour premiere, “Livin.”] Survivor is back! The beloved CBS competition series aired its two-hour season premiere on Wednesday, September 21. As to be expected, the Survivor Season 43 premiere focused much of its time introducing the 18 players, which Jeff Probst previously told TV Insider are easy to love. The players are divided into tribes Baka, Coco, and Vesi. The premiere quickly got to the first reward challenge, kicked off with a hopeful message from Probst that could double as a message to fans: “I hope Survivor gives you what you seek, and I also hope you’ll stay open to receiving what Survivor thinks you need.” Here, we break down what’s new and what’s the same out the gate of Survivor 43. Survival Tools Must Be Earned Unfortunately, Survivor does not think contestants need to start with survival tools, so winning the first challenge was vital. But like 41 and...

Eighteen new castaways, 39 26 days, one… yeah, you know the drill.
It’s been a long summer of bingeing old seasons on Paramount+, but Survivor 43 is finally here! It’s a new game, with fresh twists and, well, the same ol’ Fijian beach. And maybe a monster lurking in the jungle? I’m actually not quite sure what the latest update is on said monster, but if we know just one thing, it’s that it is very (you guessed it) dangerous.

Wednesday night on CBS, Jeff Probst officially lit the torch on the 43rd season of “Survivor.” Just like the last two cycles, this year’s crop of 18 contestants have been divided into three tribes and come from diverse backgrounds and walks of life. In Wednesday’s two-hour premiere, viewers met the new castaways and found out who had the unfortunate title of being the first person voted off the island.

“Survivor 43” contestant Elisabeth “Elie” Scott is a 31-year-old clinical psychologist from Salt Lake City, Utah. In her CBS interview, Elie states, “As a psychologist I have to think on my feet all the time. I think it’s going to help me in the game because a large part of what I do is get people to talk about their traumas. That’s often not something that people are really interested in doing.” Watch the full clip below.
Elie adds, “I plan to play a really social game. I think of myself a lot like Cirie Fields. She was super flashy. She’s a gangster in an Oprah suit and I think I’m a wolf in a Brené Brown suit.”

“Survivor 43” contestant Cody Assenmacher describes his strategy going into the game in one of the most unique ways possible — comparing it to his mullet haircut. The 35-year-old elevator salesman from Hawaii imagines his plan to “Outwit, Outplay, Outlast” the others as, “Relationship building in the front, and some wildly strategization in the back.” Watch his full CBS interview below.
Cody explains how being born in a small town in Iowa and now living on a tiny island in Hawaii will present as a challenge for him on “Survivor” because they’re locations where everyone knows each other. He says, “Being from both of those places, people look each other in the eyes and make commitments. People shake each other’s hands.” He goes on to say that because they’re small places, “You have to be a man of your word coz that’s all you got.”

“Survivor 43” contestant Ryan Medrano says his “love for ‘Survivor’ is worse than watching a scary movie.” As a superfan of the show, the 25-year-old warehouse associate from El Paso, Texas, promises to “leave it all out there” when finally playing the game for himself. Watch his full CBS interview below.
Ryan was born three months early, causing his learning and thinking patterns to be comparatively slow as a kid and requiring therapy to learn to walk and converse. Over time he learned to “read people very well” in order to communicate with others. He says, “Learning people and their facial expressions really helps me to anticipate what’s gonna happen next so that I’m not lost in the dust behind this conversation.” Ryan expects that the communication strategies he’s developed over time will help him within the game and know when people are lying to him.

“Survivor 43” contestant Justine Brennan warns her competitors not to judge a book by its cover. During her her CBS video, the 29-year old cybersecurity saleswoman from Los Angeles says, “There’s more than what meets the eye with me. I usually have my hair done. I usually have my nails done. But I grew up racing dirt bikes with my dad.” Watch the full clip below.
“If you’re familiar with tech sales, you know it’s a very male-dominated industry,” she explains. “Specifically cybersecurity is even more so. I’m very used to being the only female on my team. That’s happened to me multiple times. I completely think that people are going to underestimate me and honestly that is part of my strategy. I want them to look at me and think, ‘She probably doesn’t want to get her hands dirty.’ But I’m a super competitive person.
