Chicago – Sean Astin has distinguished himself through two memorable roles – that of the title character in the Notre Dame film “Rudy” and as Samwise Gamgee in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. But not many people know that he is a passionate civic supporter, once serving as campaign manager for his friend Dan Adler, who didn’t survive a congressional ballot runoff in 2011.
Born Sean Patrick Duke in Santa Monica, California, Astin made his film debut in the legendary “The Goonies” at age 13. After doing supporting roles in notable films like “War of the Roses” (1989) and Memphis Belle (1990), Astin did a memorable turn as the lead in “Rudy” (1993) as a million-to-one student athlete for the Notre Dame football team. His next act was the iconic “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy from 2001-03, where his Sam Gamgee character and the rest of the Lotr universe will live in cinema history.

Dan Adler is a Democratic candidate from California, hungry for a seat in the state’s 36th Congressional District. He’s also hungry for Moo Shoo chicken, kabuki performances, and picking up his dry cleaning. What do those things all have in common? Asian people! In fact, Dan Adler’s wife is Korean, which apparently makes it okay for him to rally Asian voters by shooting a campaign ad in which he courts a sassy dry cleaner dressed like the love child of Rue Maclanahan and Kim Jong Il. “You’re Jewish!” she alerts him in her signature tongue, reminding him that he should be scarfing down potato pancakes instead of making small talk with her. John Kerry had Bruce Springsteen. Barack Obama had Stevie Wonder. Dan Adler? Dude’s totally got “Chopsticks” on lockdown. [via The Awl] – Eliot Glazer...

Dan Adler is a gentleman running for Congress in California. And, as we know, the quickest way to get elected in the country’s second most penile state is by having major celebrity friends. Which is probably why Dan Adler recruited maybe the Best Small Actor In History to help secure him some votes. That actor being Sean Astin, whom you might know as Samwise Gamgee, or the son of Patty Duke Irl, or most importantly, Rudy Ruettiger. And Mr. Adler didn’t just stop at getting Astin’s endorsement. Nope. He made him reenact an entire actual scene out of the movie Rudy. As seen here: Well. There really is only one thing to say, isn’t there Roc? (Via Richard Blakely)...

Democrat Dan Adler's running for Congress, for the seat being vacated by retiring Rep. Jane Harman. The Los Angeles area district, you should know, has a significant Korean population, and that's why Adler's produced a campaign ad that addresses the concerns of Korean-Americans. And you'd be forgiven for thinking it was produced by the folks at College Humor. Set in a Korean woman's cleaners, she says to Adler "I have issues!" Later, she proclaims, "I'm Korean," and Adler says--channeling Bill Clinton--he knows what that's like. "Actually, my wife is Korean, too." The common ground leads the cleaning store lady to quickly endorse a fellow minority: "we minorities should stick together."...

Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino attended a screening of "Inglourious Basterds," along with a group of panelists and over 300 attendants, many who were survivors of the Holocaust and children of survivors. The town hall meeting sparked a glowing discussion with the filmmaker and the group of panelists.
Tarantino joined the panel on Thursday night that led by Rabbi Abraham Cooper and featured Rabbi Marvin Heir, producer Lawrence Bender, media entrepreneur Dan Adler, and actor Eli Roth. The screening was a special community event held at the Museum of Tolerance, which is part of the Simon Wiesenthal Center.
Rabbi Cooper addressed the film's growing cultural significance and the symbolic notion of justice that it brings to moviegoers: "This fantasy film allows you a few moments to live in the 'what if' and to ponder because in day to day life, we do Not have that privilege."
