Gabby Petito's family is using their voices to get answers. On Tuesday, Sept. 28, a press conference was held where Gabby's loved ones expressed gratitude to law enforcement, detectives and the media for helping them find justice. "We're just hoping that through our tragedy losing Gabby, that in the future, some good can come out of it, that we can help other people who may be in a similar situation," Gabby's stepfather Jim Schmidt told reporters. "What can we do to help people?" During the emotional press conference, Jim along with Gabby's mother Nicole Schmidt and father Joseph Petito showed off matching tattoos inspired by Gabby, who was an...

Gabby Petito's family is suffering an unimaginable heartbreak. Two days after the missing 22-year-old was confirmed dead, her stepdad Jim Schmidt and his friend Gary Rider left flowers in the shape of a cross at Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming, where her body was found. "The small cross with flowers was made by Jim and myself," Gary told U.K.'s newspaper The Independent, noting there was already a memorial there made out of stone. "That larger cross was not done by anyone connected with the search or recovery of Gabby. It was just a coincidence, we confirmed that." Gary did not specify if Jim's wife and Gabby's mother Nicole Schmidt joined them at...

It’s been a few years since the film world lost Wes Craven; and while many reach for A Nightmare on Elm Street, or The Hills have Eyes, or Scream, some like to take the time to appreciate the under sung tunes in his catalogue. This is where I enthusiastically raise a mic and start warbling about Deadly Blessing (1981), an intriguing mix of slasher, the supernatural, and religious fanaticism that could only come from the busy, brainy mind of Mr. Craven.
Released in mid-August by United Artists stateside, Deadly Blessing received no favor from critics, but did bring in over $8 million against a $2 million budget; not too bad for Craven during this period, who found himself making (highly enjoyable) TV films to keep the lights on.
Our story opens in an Amish-like farming community called “Our Blessing”; but instead of the Amish, these are Hittites, a group that one person intones,...

The Creative Coalition’s Spotlight Initiative
Selects monterey media’s Trade of Innocents
Highlights Reality of Human Trafficking
The Creative Coalition announced today that monterey media’s Trade of Innocents, (Isa: Worldwide Film Entertainment), has been selected for the organization’s prestigious Spotlight Initiative. The film highlights the shocking reality of human trafficking.
The Creative Coalition created the Spotlight Initiative as an integrated partnership that champions the art and craft of independent filmmaking by expanding a film’s outreach to leaders in business, entertainment, arts, and policy. Each year, The Creative Coalition selects up to ten movies - both feature films and documentaries - to be included in the Spotlight Initiative.
Trade of Innocents stars Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding, J. Edgar, Big Miracle, The Grey) and Academy Award-winner Mira Sorvino (Mighty Aphrodite) who play a couple grieving the loss of their own daughter while working to rescue children victimized by sex trafficking in Cambodia. The film also stars John Billingsley (2012) and Trieu Tran (Tropic Thunder,“Newsroom”) and shows the problems facing those who want to bring justice to the seedy brothels of underworld commercial sexual exploitation of children, including extreme poverty, cultural complications, and police and government complicity in crime.
Dermot Mulroney said, “I am thrilled that Trade of Innocents was selected by The Creative Coalition’s Spotlight Initiative. This is that rare film that manages to be a gripping thriller, deeply compelling, heartbreaking, and based on real events. At the same time, it sheds light on this important issue that is rarely depicted in films. The persistence of the problem of human trafficking continues to prove that it will take all the efforts of committed world citizens to begin to make a dent in and eventually end human trafficking and slavery in all forms.”
Mira Sorvino said, “I am very proud that this film is part of The Creative Coalition’s Spotlight Initiative. As a Unodc Goodwill Ambassador to combat human trafficking, I know most people are unaware that this terrible trade of children for sexual exploitation flourishes both in the Us and around the globe; Trade of Innocents will open their eyes and their hearts, and inspire them to become part of the solution.”
Trade of Innocents is written and directed by Christopher Bessette (The Enemy God) and Produced by William Bolthouse,Laurie Bolthouse, and Jim Schmidt.
