Actra, the Canadian actors union, and the Directors Guild of Canada are launching a helpline “to support members when reporting incidents of harassment.”
“We owe it to the courageous individuals who’ve exposed the truth about harassment and misconduct in our industry to have their backs,” said Dgc president Tim Southam.
Notably, the joint press release issued by the two unions doesn’t identify sexual harassment as the problem they seek to address, referring to it obliquely instead.
“Over the past 18 months, it has become clear a cultural shift within our industry is needed to prevent and reduce harassment,” said Actra national president David Sparrow. “Actra has remained dedicated in our commitment to address this issue.”
That cultural shift came about after a wave of sexual harassment claims surfaced in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal that broke on October 5, 2017.
Later that same month, Theresa Tova, president of Actra’s Toronto branch,...

In traditional Hollywood Westerns or TV crime dramas, the sheriff, the marshal, or the local police are depicted as the unassailable line between good and evil, a safe zone if you will. Regardless of the type or scale of danger, you could always feel secure standing behind a lawman... although maybe not directly behind them, because bullets will inevitably fly. Not so on Fargo; creator Noah Hawley seems to hold the police (as an institution) in contempt -- he portrays the law as consistently corrupt, weak, or incompetent to varying degrees.
Interestingly, each season of Fargo also focuses upon a lone, incorruptible officer who won't back off, who faces down fear, and who (maybe) restores sanity to otherwise insane circumstances. Gloria (Carrie Coon) is willing to throw her career in the can -- on Christmas Eve, no less -- to see her case through. She conspires with perhaps the only other honest cop,...

After she had the heart attack out in Michigan on Thanksgiving 1988, I stood by her bedside in the recovery room and she tried so hard to tell me something, but it just didn't work. I loved her so much. Did she know how much? I never told her. There are always questions you wish you'd asked after it's too late to get an answer. Sometimes years can pass before you realize they're questions.
Everyone said I "took after her," and I did. My features are more rounded than anyone else on either side of my family. Martha R. Stumm was the youngest of six surviving children of a Dutch-Irish-German couple who raised their family on a farm outside Tayorville, Illinois. Years after after her father died and her mother opened a boarding house in Urbana, enough oil was found beneath the land to make it worth drilling.
