Valerie June is soulful and stirring as she dives deep into her own rendition of Frank Ocean’s “Godspeed,” the latest release from her newly announced EP Under Cover. The 8-track project, set for release on Aug. 26, will showcase the country-soul crooner’s elasticity for making cross-genre cuts her own.
“This love will keep us through blinding of the eyes,” June sings with conviction. “Silence in the ears, darkness of the mind.”

Few country songs have had the success of Lady A’s classic 2009 hit “Need You Now.” The song was a massive hit at its time, peaking at number-two on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming one of the most digitally downloaded songs ever. Its success translated into four Grammy wins, including Record and Song of the Year. However, no other country song has won the top categories since, despite hits like Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line’s “Meant to Be,” Gabby Barrett’s “I Hope,” Sam Hunt’s “Body Like A Back Road,” and Dan and Shay’s “Tequila” being nearly as successful in recent years. What made “Need You Now” beat the odds for its win, and when can we expect another country song to take top honors?
First things first, we need to look at country’s history in Record and Song of the Year. Five country songs...

Welcome to this week’s Nxt UK review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have Joaquin Phoenix wearing a green wig and playing with those creepy little girls from The Shining. Who in the hell would play with them? This has been a pretty good week for wrestling, so I suppose the European brand of the WWE is screwed if they blow this. Don’t worry. Nxt UK is still better than Step Brothers 2: Give Me A Kiss, Swishkabob. Okay, let’s rocket the pocket ‘till the locket breaks the socket so why doncha focket?!

At 78, Willie Hightower sometimes struggles to remember details from his long career, but there are some occasions he recalls vividly: like the day his wife died (April 16th, 1995 — Easter Sunday), or the time he met Sam Cooke. The gospel phenom had traveled to Hightower’s Gadsden, Alabama, hometown with his gospel group, the Soul Stirrers. Hightower, who grew up singing in church, was just a teenager when he met Cooke in the mid-late fifties, but his life would never be the same after getting to speak with the soon-to-be pop superstar.

Bruce Springsteen has been covering Bob Dylan songs in concert since the early Seventies when his pre-fame group the Bruce Springsteen Band would play “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” as part of their club show. And even when Columbia burdened him with the “New Dylan” moniker after signing him in 1972, he continued to honor his songwriting hero by playing “I Want You,” “Chimes of Freedom,” “Highway 61 Revisited” and several others in concert.
But there was only one brief moment in history when Bob Dylan returned the favor and covered a Bruce Springsteen song.

Whenever depression looms for Joe Queenan, it's time to turn to Johnny Hallyday. What is it about the films of the French Elvis Presley that holds the answer to all life's woes?
The other day I was feeling unusually melancholy, what with the economy in the tank and construction workers building evil McMansions next to my house. One of my friends suggested I watch a Hong Kong gangster movie called Vengeance. He said the film was completely insane and would take my mind off my troubles. I told him all Hong Kong gangster movies were completely insane, but he fired back: "No – this one is really insane."
He was right.
Vengeance, released in 2009, is actually a Franco-Hong Kong collaboration that pools the resources of the legendary actor/director Johnnie To and those of the legendary rock star/actor Johnny Hallyday, the French Elvis Presley. Hallyday, né Jean-Philippe Smet, is in fact Belgian,...
