The second season of the excellent series follows directly the events of the movie, expanding on the concepts and themes that have become its trademarks, introducing new protagonists, while shedding more light to the past of one of the protagonists.

The first episode actually begins in the distant past, following a young girl named Vueko who escaped her abusive guardian and joined an expedition of pilgrims called the Ganja led by Wazukyan and Belaf to search for the mythical Golden City at the bottom of the Abyss. The design here is a bit blunter and the colors less vivid, something that actually happens each time this timeline appears throughout the series, but thankfully, the present retains the excellent visuals of the overall series. In the middle of the first episode, the focus turns again towards Riko, currently one-handed Reg,...

As is usually the case with movies spawning from anime series, “Dawn of the Deep Soul” is essentially a longer episode with better production values. At the same time, though, since the movie is actually part of the canon of the series and not a separate episode, the quality of both story and artform is at least on the same level with the impressive series, even expanding some of its most crucial elements.
Riko, Reg and their new friend Nanachi, after the events involving the first and Mitty, continue their journey down the Abyss and arrive in the 5th layer. However, in order to proceed, they must ask permission from a notorious White Whistle, Bondrewd the Novel, who was actually the man responsible for the state Nanachi and Mitty were in. The appearance of Prushka, a darling girl who immediately becomes the group's friend and calls Bondrewd father, temporarily lifts their worries,...

As it is widely known, Studio Ghibli has been impacting the anime industry rather significantly throughout the years, with some specific elements, such as the relationship with nature and using kids to comment on rather serious topics. being the most widely implemented. “Made in Abyss” is another of these titles, which goes though, into more mature territory, particularly after a point, when violence becomes a factor. Initially a manga series written and illustrated by Akihito Tsukushi, it then became an anime series and a movie, a video game, while a live-action adaptation is in the works.

Conventional vampires may not be native to classic Japanese folklore, but they eventually entered modern culture starting in the early 20th century. And today these creatures of the night have become fairly common in the media, often eclipsing actual endemic monsters or ghosts of legend. Vintage depictions of Japanese vampires (kyūketsuki) patterned themselves after Dracula and his ilk. Where these bloodsuckers began to feel more distinctly Japanese was incidentally in and around the golden age of anime, or to be more specific, the 1980s and 1990s. From Vampire Hunter D to Vampire Princess Miyu, Japanese vamps were finally stepping out of their Western counterparts’ shadows and developing their own unique origins and stories.
Looking back, the vampire’s growing popularity in Japanese culture can be interpreted as a fear of Western encroachment. That’s not to say Japan is the only place where vampires were a manifestation of cultural panic...

Ever since it first appeared on the manga scene back in 1989, Ghost in the Shell has gradually accrued a reputation for being one of the most respected anime series in the business. Heck, the IP is now beginning to makes waves in the west thanks to a live-action adaptation of the post-cyberpunk title, which recently cast Lucy star Scarlett Johnasson in the lead role.
And now, hot on the heels of that announcement, it looks as though Motoko Kusanagi is gearing up for another adventure in the anime scene after the studio revealed an enticing new promo for a brand new series in the GitS lore — one which has been billed as an “evolution” to the story. Thankfully, Animated News Network translated the text within the trailer, which reads as so:
The legendary science-fiction work that caused a revolution around the world.

I don't know if you've seen this already or not as it's been online for awhile. Either way, it's still really cool. This is a cyberpunk samurai anime commercial for Murphy's Irish Stout. It was created around 1998 by Hiroyuki Kitakubo (Blood: The Last Vampire), Kazuchika Kise (Ghost in the Shell), and Hiromasa Ogura (Ghost in the Shell). It only aired in the UK in the 90s, so chances are many of you haven't seen it yet. I think you'll really like this. Thanks to io9 for the heads up on this awesomeness. ...

The official website for the Blood-c: The Last Dark anime film began streaming a second trailer on Saturday. The last episode of the "Blood-c" television anime series had revealed in September that the film will open in theaters in Japan on June 2, 2012. The manga creator team Clamp developed the story and original character designs for the vampire television series and film, and Production I.G has been animating both projects. Naoyoshi Shiotani (Tokyo Marble Chocolate, key animator on Blood+ and Blood-c) is directing the film instead of the television version's director Tsutomu Mizushima. Writers Jun'ichi Fujisaku and Nanase Ohkawa (Clamp), animation character designer/chief animation director Kazuchika Kise, and voice cast members Nana Mizuki (Saya Kisaragi) and Kenji Nojima (Fumito Nanahara) are returning from the television series. Just when you thought there was never enough Samurai animations in the world Ghost in the Shell’s lord and master Mamoru Oshii is developing a animated samurai film for Japanese animation powerhouse Production I.G.
This new film, slated for a Summer 2009 bow, will be based on the life of Japan’s most celebrated Samuarai, Musashi Miyamoto. This new film will be called Miyamoto Musashi: Sōken ni Haseru Yume (Musashi Miyamoto: The Dream of Riding with Two Swords). Musashi created and perfected a two-sword kenjutsu technique called niten’ichi ("two heavens as one") or nitōichi ("two swords as one"). He was also the author of The Book of Five Rings, a book that is still studied today. Word is it rivals Sun Tzu’s Art of War in regards to strategy and tactics.
Should be interesting. Oshii is gathering quite the talent together for this project. Mizuho Nishikubo, an...
