Best actor Oscar contender Bill Nighy is front and center in the Variety exclusive trailer debut for the drama “Living” from Sony Pictures Classics, celebrating its 30-year anniversary.
Written by Kazuo Ishiguro, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2017, the film is an English-language adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s “Ikiru” (1952), and it is set in 1953 London, following Mr. Williams (Nighy), a bureaucrat who is facing a fatal illness. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, making multiple stops at nearly every major fall festival including Telluride, Venice and Toronto.
Nighy, one of the great British character actors of our time, is given one of the richest roles of his career, showcasing tender and deeply moving moments throughout the film. A BAFTA winner for “Love Actually” (2003), he’s never received an Oscar nomination. However, similar to other great veteran actors being recognized during the last 20 years by the Academy...

Theatre is the quintessential art of reinterpretation. Every time a play is revived it is “remade”. With something so joyously provisional, why would you want to be definitive? And so with that in mind, let’s be clear that what follows is not some Olympian effort to decree “the best plays of all time”. Instead, it is a selection of pieces we find continually rewarding.
Inevitably, such a list reflects the work that’s staged, celebrated, and studied in the UK; it draws on a western canon. There are more men than women, more white writers than people of colour, although limiting ourselves to a single work by any author – dead white male or not – should help to widen the scope a little; yes, that means only one play by Shakespeare. We hope you will check out these plays – ideally in performance but, if you can’t find one, by reading the text.

Exclusive: Deadline has a new trailer for Alaskan Nets, a sports documentary executive produced by Chris Pratt and his production company Invisible Productions that Good Deed Entertainment is releasing on digital and VOD on April 8.
The film from director Jeff Harasimowicz takes viewers to an island that lies off the coast of Southeast Alaska. Remote and largely hidden from the outside world, it’s home to the Tsimshian natives of Alaska’s last remaining native reserve: Metlakatla. For more than a century, two sacred traditions have defined Metlakatla: fishing and basketball. Audiences will witness the improbable journey of cousins Danny Marsden and DJ King, fishermen and stars of the high school basketball team, as they lead their team and town toward their first state championship in more than 30 years—the only thing that will bring life back to an island that has undergone unimaginable tragedy.

“The Favourite” won seven BAFTA Awards on Sunday, including Best British Film. The latter was the first win of the night and brought director Yorgos Lanthimos and screenwriters Tony McNamara and Deborah Davis backstage. In our interview, I asked if any modern rivalries had influenced how they created the conflict-laden tale of women vying for power.
“We had a few references – there was a Greek film, and I thought about ‘All About Eve’ occasionally, but we didn’t discuss any modern rivalries or people,” says McNamara, who shared the Best Original Screenplay prize with Davis later in the evening.
See Will the Oscars be a rerun of the BAFTAs?
“I really liked Sarah Kane‘s ‘Phaedra’s Love’ which is a great play bya British writer. But we ultimately decided to be as original as possible,” says Lanthimos. Fair warning to anyone who wishes to Google Kane (as I did...

Screen considers potential runners and riders.
The BBC is likely to announce its new head of film within the next two weeks, according to sources close to the process.
Scroll down for potential candidates and the original job spec
That timetable should come as a relief to those under consideration for the role and to wider industry who will want to begin building or growing their relationship with the new boss.
The job, which is considered one of the UK’s most prestigious posts, became vacant in autumn 2016 following the departure of long-time chief Christine Langan. BBC Films veteran Joe Oppenheimer has been serving as acting head of film since then.
The incoming head of film is expected to have an annual war chest of around £12m for production, cementing BBC Films’ position as one the three mainstays of public funding in the UK along with the BFI and Film4.
