In Part 2 of tMF's 50 Essential Foreign Films, we're listing down our UK Top 10. This means the list is not limited to English films and include movies which essentially are either about the whole United Kingdom or predominantly so or about someone from London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast or from any other places in the UK.

There is one particular issue that The Guardian pointed out, which at some point, was an important consideration in our own list of 10. A few days ago, The Observer published the Best British Films poll, to which it was pointed out:
... how to define a British film. Did it need to be shot here? Funded here? Feature predominantly British talent, in front and behind the camera?...

Jamie Bell makes the best of a bad situation as Hallam, the titular teenage protagonist of Mister Foe, whose anger, resentment and paranoia drive him from his father's remote Scottish Highlands estate to the streets of Edinburgh in search of solace. Hallam's mother recently drowned in the loch behind the house, the apparent victim of a freak boating accident, and his dad (Ciarán Hinds) has moved on and married his former secretary Verity (Claire Forlani), whom he was seeing before his wife's untimely passing and whom Hallam believes is a gold-digging hooker responsible for mom's death. Bell conveys the kid's withdrawn distrust through restless body language and wary glares, while at the same time flashing steely, cocky defiance during Hallam's confrontations with dad and Verity, as well as nonchalant, gregarious charm in the company of others. His performance has a multifaceted vitality to it,...

- It happens to be one of those week where we are getting tons of movie poster images. Just the way we like it. Here we have a pair from Magnolia Pictures - first off we have the Cannes selected newest pic from the filmmaker behind Irma Vep and Demonlover. To be release via Magnet Releasing this coming March, Boarding Gate sees the spunky Asia Argento play sexy ex-prostitute Sandra, who is forced to flee London after a steamy S&M encounter with a debt-ridden ex-lover (Michael Madsen) ends in violence. Fleeing to Hong Kong in search of a fresh start, she becomes involved with an attractive young couple, Lester (Carl Ng) and Sue (Kelly Lin), who promise to help her obtain papers and money. But nothing turns out as expected for Sandra, and she finds herself trapped in a sordid game of manipulation. Seeing that I'm a big fan of U.

LONDON -- David Mackenzie's romantic drama Hallam Foe will open this year's Edinburgh International Film Festival, organizers said Wednesday.
Festival artistic director Hannah McGill described Mackenzie's movie as having a "an unforgettable atmosphere and some of the finest performances of the year."
The movie stars Jamie Bell along with Sophia Myles, Ciaran Hinds and Claire Forlani.
From a script Mackenzie and Ed Whitmore adapted from Peter Jinks' novel, Hallam Foe details the story of a young voyeur who is convinced that his stepmother is responsible for his mother's suicide. It is produced by Gillian Berrie and executive produced by Duncan Reid, Peter Touche and Matthew Justice.
The film will be distributed in the U.K. by Buena Vista International and in the U.S. by Magnolia Pictures.
Buena Vista International (U.K.) senior vp and managing director Robert Mitchell said the film is "a hugely accomplished piece of filmmaking" and that it "presents a beautiful vision of Edinburgh and is crafted by one of Scotland's most respected filmmakers."
This year's EIFF runs Aug.

- In my books David Mackenzie has in his young career, already established himself as a U.K director worthy of auteurist studies. His breakthrough film Young Adam – a pic that was screened in Un Certain Regard at Cannes blew me away and I get to have some more - Variety reports that Magnolia Pictures has picked up his latest pic for a domestic 08’ release (Red Envelope Entertainment is also on the deal with the DVD release). Hallam Foe might be a rooftop, treehouse version of Rear Window, based on the screenplay by Ed Whitmore and based on the novel by Peter Jinks – this is a twisted Freudian adventure, the film centers on a teenager (Jamie Bell) voyeur who fancies his step-mother (Sophia Myles) until he becomes convinced that she murdered his mother. He leaves home when she seduces him and begins a feral life in the rooftops of Edinburgh
